T9 Launcher allows you to “dial” your favorite apps

There are a lot of launchers available on Google Play and looks like more and more developers will introduce their own versions. The latest is this T9 Launcher from Dagsverket that offers quick access to your favorite apps. Just like any launchers, the T9 promises speed, predictive searches, and familiarizing of your phone usage patterns. This productivity app also allows direct dialing of numbers from the dialpad simply by clicking the Home button and clicking on it again to hide.

What's more interesting about this launcher is that you can "dial" them up. Doing so will access the app immediately. The app dialer has predictive search so you quickly access the apps you frequently use. Of course, the T9 Launcher app now also features some Material Design elements.

This free launcher app is unique because it can access apps from the phone dialer. "Calling" your favorite app is a new mobile experience only from the developer of the T9. People who already downloaded the app especially like the big icons and the dialler as the shortcut for accessing apps that are used frequently. As expected, the app still has a few bugs but developer is already in the process of fixing them.

The T9 Launcher doesn't require any root access. Simply open the T9 Launcher and use it as your home screen on your Android device. To bring up the dial pad, press the home button. Dial the numbers as if you're dialling another contact number to access the said app. If you long press on the Launch area, more information and other options will be displayed.

Com2uS Dragon Knights: RPG in name, dungeon crawler in deed

Mobile gaming, for all its benefits and strengths, has somewhat diluted the definition of the RPG genre lately. What was once a class of games with rather clear borders have started bleeding into the description of any game that involves a crew of characters with sword and magic. This new Dragon Knights game from Com2uS is one such game that masquerades as an RPG but really comes closer to a dungeon crawler. That said, RPG or not, that doesn't mean that this game can't be fun.

In essence, Dragon Knights is a turn-based dungeon crawler, albeit one that has a backstory, no matter how flimsy or thin it may be. The basics are the same: go through dungeons to fight monsters and save the world from the devil horde. To do so, you will have to build up your motley crew from an assortment of available heroes. Though there are indeed many characters to choose from, they do fall under one of four classes, which lends to the RPG-like feel of the game. Oh, and you do get pets to summon and help you in your battles.

The game plays over in both single player and multiplayer modes. The multi player gameplay comes via cooperative boss raids and boss battles. There's also a PvP arena to test your team's mettle. Like majority of mobile games, the game has a ladderized progression system where each new distinct level is unlocked by finishing the ones before it. You enter a dungeon and the battle commences. There is very little in terms of exploration that you might find in conventional RPGs. The graphics of the game are very basic, with miniaturized 3D models set on a flattened 3D background.

The game is free to play and, of course, holds in-app purchases for a quick fix. Hit the video below for the game's rather cheesy trailer.

Parallels Access update: file manager, PC-to-PC remote access, S-Pen integration

For the average digital person, normally you work or study using not just one gadget, but most likely 3 (or more): a computer/laptop, a tablet and a smartphone. So cross-platform solutions are not just a want, but a must-have, if you work on various devices running on different platforms as well. One of those apps is Parallels Access, and the latest update will make it even easier to work and access files, wherever you may be, whatever gadget you may be working on.

Version 2.5 of the app brings even more innovative features that will allow you to access the files that you need all in just one app. The Universal File Manager is that one place where you can get to your files, whether they're on Dropbox, Google Drive, or even on your remote computer. You will also be able to copy the files from your remote computer onto your mobile device, if need be. And if you have too many files and not enough time to open them while searching for something, there is a preview for most file formats for both local and remote files.

Another new feature of Parallels Access is that if you're on one computer and you need to access files on your remote PC, you can do so without installing any new software, but by just using any modern web browser and accessing the files through a set IP address set by the app. If you're a Samsung user, the app also now has full support for the S-Pen for the Galaxy Note 4 and the Galaxy Note Edge.

Parallels Access 2.5 is rolling out to users, but if you haven't tried this app yet, you can download it for free from the Google Play Store. There are in-app purchases as well to give you more useful features to enjoy as you work on your mobile devices, wherever you may be.

Cyanogen’s Steve Kondik chimes in on OnePlus, Micromax row

Although India seems to be quickly becoming the new darling of the mobile industry after China, it isn't without its own share of controversy. So far the latest and biggest involves Indian OEM Micromax and Chinese startup OnePlus and it all revolves around the software provided by Cyanogen, Inc. While our limited outsider perspective would have us assign roles of villain and victim in this drama, things are, as always, not as clear cut. CyanogenMod founder Steve Kondik gives a few insights into some of the things that have happened behind the scenes.

First, a short trip down memory lane. After a few round of rumors, Cyanogen did reveal its new partnership with Micromax as part of the OEM's new online YU brand. Then just a few days later, OnePlus announced its own venture into the subcontinent, partnering with Amazon India. It wouldn't be until a month later that Micromax would unveil the Cyanogen OS-powered YUreka smartphone, but in between Micromax was able to temporarily ban the OnePlus One from imports, though India's High Court granted the Chinese company a small reprieve in lieu of court hearing this month.

At first glance, some might readily label Cyanogen as the cunning antagonist of the story, committing adultery and simply going where the money is. And the emails from Cyanogen CEO Kirt McMaster that were shown in court seemed to reinforce that image, likening the communication between Cyanogen and OnePlus to a very bad breakup done over SMS. The problem here, according to Kondik, is that those are merely snippets of a longer communication between the two startups and that the breakup, though present, wasn't so abrupt, kurt, or disrespectful.

Another issue is how the two companies interpreted "exclusivity", which somewhat clashed with the companies' target markets. Micromax does have an exclusive deal with Cyanogen in India but its market is confined to the country's borders. OnePlus, on the other hand, also has exclusivity, but its smartphone is a global product. So the two definitions of exclusivity butt heads in India. Kondik says, however, that Cyanogen didn't anticipate that Micromax would hold that retroactively against OnePlus, which started the whole mess. Cyanogen is still committed to supporting the OnePlus One, even as far as bringing Android 5.0 to it soon. Whether that will still happen for devices sold in India, Kondik does not say and will most likely depend on the court's verdict. Whether or not OnePlus is still interested, however, is a different question.

As to the implication that Cyanogen's seemingly duplicitous actions were motivated by financial gain, Kondik reveals that the company isn't actually making money off licensing, which throws that theory out the window. The company is still venture-funded, which implies that Cyanogen, at least for now, isn't motivated by profits. That is partly reassuring, as it means the developers are primarily still committed to the excellence of software more than anything. At the same time, it does invite questions of sustainability in the future.
