Sony Z Ultra Google Play edition gets a $200 price drop

It seems the Sony Z Ultra Google Play edition has gotten a pretty significant price drop today. The handset first arrived back in December and while generally liked in day-to-day use, many complained about the price. It initially arrived with a $650 price point. As of today however, you can pick it up for $200 less.

This means the handset is down to $449. And to further entice buyers, Google is including free ground shipping. But while the price has dropped -- you'll still be purchasing an oversized smartphone. As a reminder, the Sony Z Ultra GPe is sporting a 6.4-inch display. Thankfully that is Full HD at 1920 x 1080 with a 342 ppi.

Other spec related highlights for the handset include a 2.2GHz Qualcomm MSM8974 processor with 2GB of RAM, 16GB of internal storage, 3000 mAh battery, 2MP front-facing camera and an 8MP rear-facing camera with an Exmor RS sensor. As with other Google Play edition handsets -- the Sony Z Ultra is running a clean version of Android.

The handset originally launched with Android 4.4, however we quickly saw that updated to 4.4.2, which is where it remains today. Bottom line here, if you had your eye on the GPe Sony Z Ultra but held off due to price -- now may be a good time to reconsider. But then again, we've also seen several other GPe handsets including the HTC One (M8) arrive in the Play Store since, and some of those may be more attractive at this point in time.

Those looking for a bit more on the Sony Z Ultra Google Play edition may want to check out our hands-on post from shortly after the release.

Google Glass update improving phone answering and more

Google Glass users have another update coming this week, and it seems this is one they will want to grab right away. This time around the update is dealing with images and video as well as answering incoming phone calls. In this case of phone calls -- it seems Glass is about to get a bit smarter.

Google mentioned how audio for calls answered or made with your phone will stay on your phone. And alternatively, audio for calls answered or made with Glass will stay with Glass. Perhaps key with this is that phone calls will no longer route to Glass if it's inactive. Basically, if you have Glass off and sitting on your desk, you will not have to put it on to answer the incoming call.

back-up-all

Shifting over to the image and video aspect of this update and we are looking at backing up and removing them from the timeline. Glass users will soon have the option to backup images using any connection, whereas it had only been done when plugged in and over WiFi in the past. You'll be able to head to the Auto Backup card in settings and tap to begin an update when you want.

The clearing of images and videos from the timeline is said to be one to the top community requests. Once this update has rolled out to your Glass you'll be able to clear them all at the same time. This should help to free up some space, but also make things quicker and a bit simpler. You will need to tap the Auto Backup card and then swipe forward to "Clear." This will then remove all images and videos provided they have already been synced.

LastPass update brings Galaxy S5 fingerprint authentication

Galaxy S5 users were always able to unlock their handset using the fingerprint scanner. PayPal also added support shortly after the handset launched. Well, it looks like another company has come forward with support. This latest is LastPass and the support comes by way of the recently updated Password Manager app.

This support is actually quite useful. It means users will be able to swipe their finger when prompted for a password. LastPass has always been fairly user friendly in terms of getting your password where you need, but this seems to open up a new level of convenience.

LastPass as a service is one we would suggest checking out. At the very least, even if you choose not to use LastPass, a password manager of some sort is a good idea these days. LastPass gives users the ability to fill in passwords for apps and within Chrome. Nicely, there is also an extension for Chrome on the desktop so your passwords will always be available.

And to clarify -- all of your individual passwords are then secured with one master password. Or in the case of your Galaxy S5, they are secured with your fingerprint. That having been said, the LastPass mobile app does require a premium level subscription which is $12 per year.

The LastPass app can be found in the Google Play Store.

Dimple.IO uses NFC to add four buttons to your smartphone

Dimple is a new concept being shown that can add four buttons to an Android device equipped with NFC. We'll call this a concept for now as the company has yet to begin shipping. For now the company has plans to launch a crowd funding campaign on Indiegogo and are hoping to begin shipping in the beginning of August.

Having said that, the idea is both simple and interesting. Dimple is an NFC tag that attaches to your smartphone. These tags have four buttons and each of them can be programmed to do a specific task. A few use case examples including launching an app, calling someone, or even activating the flashlight.

dimple-02

Of course, you could also get a bit more creative and use Dimple to control your music, as a camera shutter button, or to quickly change some settings. Dimple will also have Tasker integration for those wanting to get extra nerdy. Otherwise, as these are simple NFC tags -- there isn't any battery life to worry about. They are also on the thin side measuring in at just 0.5mm thick.

As with other NFC tags, you will want to watch the case you have as some will restrict the use, but the folks at Dimple estimate there to be around 800 compatible devices. Anyway, the Indiegogo campaign is expected to launch on May 6th and Dimple will be available with pledge levels beginning at $26.99 for initial backers.

BLU Studio 5.0 arrives with support for T-Mobile LTE

The BLU Studio 5.0 isn't an entirely new device from BLU Products, however they did just announce a new variant. And nicely, this one addresses a frequent complaint; the lack of LTE support. The BLU Studio 5.0 LTE has been unveiled with support for the T-Mobile network.

Specifically, the handset supports 4G LTE on the 1700 and 2600 Mhz bands. There is also 3G support on the 850/1700/1900/2100 bands. Aside from network support, those looking towards the Studio 5.0 LTE can expect to find a 5-inch qHD (960 x 540) display, 4GB of internal storage, 2000 mAh battery and Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean.

The camera setup includes a 1.6 megapixel on the front and an 8 megapixel on the back. The rear-facing camera specs include the following; auto-focus, 1.4 micron pixel size, 1/3.2-inch sensor, 4.4mm aperture and LED flash. It is also capable of capturing 1080p video at 30fps. Otherwise, power comes by way of a quad-core 1.4GHz Snapdragon 400 processor with 1GB of RAM.

While the specs may not be super high end, they do appear to match the price. BLU Products has the Studio 5.0 LTE sitting at $249. And to clarify -- that is an unlocked and contract free price. The handset will be available from the end of May, and by way of several US retailers including Amazon, Best Buy and Walmart.

Android “Silver” program rumored to replace the Nexus lineup

The Android Silver name first came up earlier in the month. At the time the Silver program was thought to be a way for Google to better work with the carriers, and also to establish a bit more control over Android. There was talk of displaying these handsets in special sections of carrier stores, and having them be sold by specially trained employees.

Well, flash forward to the present day and there is now a confirming report about Android Silver coming from The Information. Details here suggest Google will be dropping the Nexus line in favor of Android Silver. While some are fans of the Nexus and Google Play edition (GPe) lines for the clean Android experience -- it seems some of this will be carried over from Nexus to Silver.

The report mentioned how the Silver program will put limits on things such as the amount of non-Google apps that can be pre-installed. It even looks like Google will make it so users can choose to uninstall those pre-installed apps. The key seems to be in working with the carriers and manufacturers though, and The Information said they will "effectively be paid to produce and sell high-end devices that closely adhere to Google specifications."

Bottom line here, it looks like Android Silver will be the way Google tries to take back some of the control. There is still quite a bit we need to see, but so far it does sound like it could help Android. Having said that, and liking the idea thus far, we do have to wonder if this will kill the Nexus line, or simply push it further over to being a reference line for developers.

Acer Liquid Jade and Liquid Leap wearable now official

Acer has shown their latest smartphone this morning. The handset is the Liquid Jade and it was announced alongside the Liquid Leap. The latter is the wearable we first saw teased back towards the end of March.

Acer offered the basics for each of these devices along with some teasing. But in the end, there are still plenty of missing details. We've yet to see anything in terms of the pricing, and market availability hasn't been fully detailed either. For now Acer has said the Liquid Jade smartphone rollout will begin in July and the Liquid Leap wearable will arrive around the same time.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Further details on the wearable include how it will launch as a "companion" device and in select markets. So far we have yet to hear anything suggesting either of these would be arriving in the US.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

The smartphone is said to have Gorilla Glass for protection and "no sharp surfaces." Specs were kept to a minimum, however our friends at SlashGear are estimating the handset to be sporting a 5-inch display. One thing Acer did mention was how the handset would be available in a variety of colors.

Otherwise, the Leap wearable will show fitness details including steps as well as notifications sent from the smartphone. Those include alerts for calls and messages, and similar to how some of the other wearables work -- this should help determine whether you actually need to remove the phone from your pocket.

Firefox for Android update adds more customization options

The latest Firefox for Android update has arrived in the Google Play Store this morning. The focus here appears to be on customization with Mozilla touting a new home screen and new sharing features. There are a handful of changes this time around, however it seems the most important may be dealing with Firefox Accounts and Firefox Sync.

Mozilla has introduced Firefox Accounts, which will power the "enhanced" Firefox Sync. Basically, this means you'll be able to take your data with you as you jump from smartphone to tablet. The Sync setup includes passwords, open tabs, form data, history and bookmarks. And along with syncing across Android devices, the data can also be set to sync to your desktop browser.

Some of the customization option deal with the swipe section. You'll now be able to customize the swipeable History, Top Sites, Bookmarks and Reading List menu. For those not as familiar with Firefox for Android -- these are the home screen pages, and moving forward you will be able to choose the one that appears as default.

That chosen home page will show with a new tab and also with a new browsing session. Some of the other highlights mentioned by Mozilla include new colorful icons on the menu bar and the ability to personalize and prioritize sharing content including articles, videos and images to your favorite social sites.

Nod, the gesture control ring arrives for pre-order

Another entry has arrived in the wearable space today. This one is a ring called Nod that brings the promise of "beautiful, touchless interaction." Essentially, those wearing the Nod ring will be able to control items around them with a wave of the hand.

Nod has support for a variety of devices and platforms. There is support for Android, as well as Mac and Windows. Also noted was support for specific products such as Nest, Hue, WeMo and GoPro. Some of the provided examples include being able to adjust your thermostat, pressing play on your smartphone, and adjusting the lights.

Nod_Device_Slider

The key here -- those things can all be done with simple hand gestures, and from across the room. At the moment the Nod gesture ring is available in black, though the company has said they are exploring more color options. The battery life is "one day of active use" and it can be charged with the included box charger. Basically, you plug the box into a wall outlet or microUSB and then sit the ring in the box.

Nod_Device_Components

Other highlights here include the Nod being waterproof (to 5 atmospheres) and available in a variety of sizes. The Nod is priced at $149 and currently available for pre-order. Having said that, the question now comes down to whether you want to wear a ring and use gestures to control the various supported items around your house.

Google Glass Field Trip update adds “Explore Nearby” voice support

Field Trip first arrived for Google Glass users back in August 2013, however more recently an update has added some new functionality. Simply put, Glass users are now able to activate Field Trip by saying "Ok Glass, Explore Nearby." From that point there is also some options for personalization.

The app is also touting information from more than 200 content partners. But as we've seen in the past, that may vary a bit from location to location. Stepping back from the recent update for Glass. Field Trip as a whole allows you to explore what is around you, wherever you happen to be.

The app promises to offer details on everything from history and architecture to insider tips and other "hidden gems." Google Glass users can activate the Field Trip using My Glass. New users activating for the first time should be all set with the "Explore Nearby" voice command. It was suggested that current users turn Field Trip off, then back on to get going with voice.

This seems like a solid addition for the Google Glass app, and as a reminder, Field Trip is also available for Android. Those looking for Field Trip on Android will be able to find it using this Play Store link. Also worth mentioning, Field Trip is available for free, both on Glass and Android.

Reddit Android app tipped by company job listing

There isn't any shortage of Reddit apps available for Android users. But as many realize -- those apps are all from third-parties. While we've been happily using some of those third party apps here, we have also been hoping to see an official Reddit app arrive in the Play Store.

So far there hasn't been any sort of timeline, but a recent job listing suggests the app will be coming. The listing touts how Reddit is "going mobile" and as such, they are hiring mobile app developers. Those interested in learning the full job requirements for the job can hit the source link below.

More important for the end user is this -- Reddit is looking for someone with Android experience. Specifically, for someone with Java and design as related to Android. Ultimately that means we should be on the lookout for some finer details from Reddit, and in the end, an app arriving in the Play store.

But again, we still need an official announcement for the specifics. In the meantime we'll continue using those third-party apps. We are also hopeful this new competition will spur some further excitement and lead to some solid apps all around, both official and third party.

Sharp AQUOS 304SH boasts slim bezels on 5.2-inch display

As smarpthone manufacturers push displays to larger sizes, they are also trying to squeeze bezels out to let the screen take as much space as possible. Sharp's latest smarpthone, the AQUOS Xx 304SH, boasts of a deadly screen and bezel size combo that seeks to dethrone the current titleholder.

There was a recent chart made that compares the different smartphones in the market in terms of the actual amount of area used up by the screen versus those occupied by bezels and buttons. At the very top is the LG G2, which has 75.7 percent of the front space dedicated to the display. Now Sharp is unveiling a contender to that title. The AQUOS Xx 304SH sports a 5.2-inch 1080p screen but its bezels are so thin that display itself is believed to occupy as much as 79 percent of the area. If true, then this puts the AQUOS Xx 304SH well ahead of the bezel shrinking race. Of course, the display uses Sharp's power-efficient IGZO technology to make it even sweeter.

sharp-aquos-304sh-2 sharp-aquos-304sh-3

Of course, that isn't the only thing going for this Sharp smartphone. It is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 801, albeit the slightly slower 2.3 GHz variant. There is 2 GB of RAM and 32 GB of internal storage. The 13 megapixel rear camera has an aperture of f/1.9 and sports a "PureLED" flash, as well the usual camera features you'd find on other high-end smartphones, like HDR, photosphere, and the like. It boasts of an IPX5/IPX7 ingress protection rating and, for residents of Japan, it features the early warning system that was put into effect tsunami of 2011 as well as Full Seg terrestrial digital TV.

The Sharp AQUOS Xx 304SH is scheduled for a May launch in Japan, though it is yet unknown if the company will every bring it to other markets. In Japan, it will have a price tag of 2,800 yen, around $28, with a two-year contract or 69,120 yen, roughly $675, without one.

Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 Android 4.4.2 changes get detailed

As mentioned before, the Android 4.4.2 update for the Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 edition has started rolling out to owners in the US. now we're getting a glimpse of some of the changes in this update, which are admittedly interesting, if you're the type who have accepted the Samsung TouchWiz way of life.

Of course, we're going to see some of the same changes that run across all Android 4.4 versions, like the monochromatic notification icons. However, unlike other Galaxy devices upgraded to the latest Android version, Samsung is throwing in a lot more in its 10.1-inch S-Pen enabled tablet. Most obvious perhaps would also be related to notifications, Samsung's own custom notification panel. This has been revamped with the flat theme that Samsung is believed to be pushing going forward. The Multi Window bar has also been revamped, pushing it all the way to the right and now taking up two rows, making it quite similar to Samsung's Galaxy Pro tablet line. Another visual change, to more subtle this time, is the new task manager or recent apps list.

galaxy-note-10.1-2014-android-4.4-1 galaxy-note-10.1-2014-android-4.4-2 galaxy-note-10.1-2014-android-4.4-3 galaxy-note-10.1-2014-android-4.4-4

But the Android 4.4 update isn't all about fluff. There are also positive changes under the hood that are being reported by users. Performance is deemed faster across the board, including the Samsung web browser. There has been noticeable reduction in lag as well especially in waking up the device and in the S-Pen response time. Battery life has also been improved, partly thanks to the improvements coming from Android 4.4 itself. Some of Samsung's apps and proprietary features have reportedly also been modified just a tiny bit, particularly those related to S Pen functionality.

These are definitely some huge and positive changes, especially for users of some of TouchWiz's more useful features. The Android 4.4.2 update comes in a very large 540 MB files size, so users best be prepared for the occasion when the update notification finally hits their device.

Viber transmits and stores images and videos insecurely

After the security scandals that rocked Snapchat, and later WhatsApp, it is now Viber's turn to get the hot seat. The instant messaging service was discovered to be transmitting images and videos posted by users and storing them on their servers with little security, allowing those with knowledge to get access to those pieces of data with no need for authentication.

This revelation came from security researchers at the University of New Haven. Their setup involved using Windows 7 as a virtual wifi miniport to which mobile devices connect to. This allowed them to monitor and capture Internet traffic going to and from Viber's servers. The findings are quick shocking. It's bad enough that videos and images are transmitted over the Internet without encryption, a security feature that, in this day and age of senseless snooping and privacy invasions, should be a must, especially in popular Internet services. But the data itself is stored on Viber's Amazon servers also unencrypted and requiring no authentication to access. Meaning, anyone who knows how can take a peek at those sometimes personal and private media. The video below demonstrates the process in detail.

To be fair, it is not exactly a piece of cake to accomplish this, but hackers with enough skill and tools, like those using WiFI access point snooping or man-in-the-middle attacks, will be able to use this to their advantage. And there's also the fact that those with such knowledge, tools, and skills might even be coming from our own governments. Regardless of how easy or hard it is to exploit, these are flaws that fly in the face of the most basic security best practices.

The bad news is that there is really no way to fix this from the user's end, except for refusing to use Viber until a fix has been made. The good news is that Viber has been informed of the security hole and has worked on a fix that will be rolling out to the Android app soon.

NETGEAR STS7000 is a tablet geared for home security

Most tablets are created for content consumption and games, but NETGEAR and smart home specialist iControl have something different in mind. While the NETGEAR STS7000 still has some features you'd expect from an Android tablet, it's raison d'être is being a gateway to a home security system and more.

If one looks at this tablet's spec sheet, "underwhelming" is the kindest thing you can say about the STS7000. It runs on an unnamed Cortex-A9 processor with only 512 MB of RAM and 2 GB of NAND storage. Display size isn't stated, but the 800x480 resolution and 16-bit color depth doesn't inspire much confidence. It even runs an almost ancient Android 4.0.3 version. This NETGEAR branded tablet isn't all that bad. It is one of the very few tablets that can claim to have a removable battery, for one. And with NETGEAR as the other half of the duo, you can presume some networking prowess. Indeed, the tablet is equipped 802.11N 2x2 Dual Band Switchable connectivity.

That said, the two companies are more interested in turning the STS7000 into a touch-driven control center for the smart home of today or tomorrow. From the tablet, users can control security locks, monitor smart appliances, toggle lights, and so on. But the tablet also goes a bit beyond that basic functionality. It has Google Maps pre-installed, used more for traffic updates than outside navigation. Coupled with INTELLICAST weather forecasting and news reporting, the STS7000 becomes your information hub at home. The music application installed on the tablet also lets users stream their iTunes collection via AirPlay. NETGEAR notes the availability of Android apps, though it isn't sure yet whether they will be coming via Google Play Store or from some other app marketplace.

netgear-sts7000-2 netgear-sts7000-3 netgear-sts7000-4

As one would expect, the NETGEAR STS7000 security tablet isn't available for purchase off shelves and retailers. NETGEAR notes that the tablet can be acquired from service providers, but doesn't exactly detail from whom and for how much.

Hulu Plus app now casts to PS3, PS4, Xbox One

Today, Hulu is extending the reach of its remote control app for Android, and iOS, to more targets. With the most recent update, users will be able to control what's playing from their Hulu account right on their PlayStation 3 or 4 or Xbox One.

The Hulu Plus Android app is getting more and more talented at throwing content over to remote devices. Last October, after a few months of waiting, Chromecast and Hulu added support for the HDMI dongle, allowing users to take advantage of Google's hot little device. Now a few more devices are added to the officially sanctioned list, in the form of the gaming consoles you might already have sitting in your living room.

The way it works is dead simple. Simple open the app, select the content you want to watch and sit back and relax as it plays on your big screen via your choice of current, or in the case of the PS3, previous, gen console. No wires, no fuss. Can't get any simpler than that.

The whole setup requires, aside from a Hulu Plus account of course, that the user is logged in on Hulu Plus on Android as well as on Hulu Plus on the console using the same account. The Hulu Plus Android app is available for free on Google Play Store in any region supported by the service.

Jabra Rox wireless earphones review

The Rox wireless earbuds are the latest from Jabra. These are touted as offering an ultra-secure fit and massive wireless sound. We've spent quite a bit of time with some of the other Jabra products, and quite honestly, we have really been digging the lineup. Having said that, when Jabra reached out with an offer to check out a set of the Rox wireless earbuds we were pretty anxious. What follows are some thoughts after a week of use.

We suppose everyone has a special reason as to why they like, or prefer wireless headphones. For us that reason is to go running. And to a lesser degree, to wear while doing yard work. Given our past experience with Jabra products we weren't all that worried about the sound quality. Our main concern here was comfort, the overall fit and feel.

P1070850-X2

We can begin with this, the Jabra Rox wireless earbuds didn't disappoint in terms of sound quality. Similar to other products in the Jabra lineup, these offer Dolby Digital Plus sound and can be paired with the special Jabra sound app. We listened to a mix of music (Play Music), podcasts (DoggCatcher) and audiobooks (Audible) and were happy with the quality across the board.

P1070849-X2 P1070862-X2 P1070861-X2 P1070865-X2 P1070866-X2

Jabra includes a variety of "EarGels" and "EarWings" to help achieve the perfect fit. Despite having a set of EarGels that felt like they offered a tight fit, we ended up needing to attach a set of EarWings to keep the earbuds from loosening up and slipping out. Overall not a big deal, an ultimately this setup proved comfortable even for extended time periods (roughly 2 hours at a stretch).

The overall setup feels sturdy and solid. That thought applies to the earbuds and the cable that runs around the back of your neck. In regards to the cable, Jabra has that loaded with a set of inline controls which can be used to play/pause and also raise and lower the volume. Additionally, those same controls allow you to answer any incoming calls.

P1070852-X2 P1070853-X2 P1070856-X2 P1070859-X2

Jabra suggests these have a battery life of up to 5.5 hours. We were able to get really close, say, about 5 hours. Our longest test was a 2 hour run, which was followed by a bit of down time with the headphones in standby. After that we had them back in for about another 2 hours doing some work around the house, then again back in standby mode overnight. The following morning we knocked out another hour as we settled in to work. All said and done, no reason to complain about battery life.

These earbuds can easily be put in to sleep mode by attaching them (they stick together with "built-in power-saving magnets"). They charge over microUSB, which can be found tucked under the cover on the left earbud. Charging takes a little more than 2 hours to go from empty to full. There is also an LED indicator light on that same left earbud.

P1070846-X2

A few other highlights here include the easy initial pairing. These are Bluetooth and can be paired like any other set of Bluetooth headphones by heading into the settings on your phone (or tablet). Jabra also has NFC pairing available on the Rox wireless earbuds. To pair using NFC you'll need to slide your phone over the inline control.

Being a runner and living in Florida (which means being outside in hot and humid conditions, with frequent rain storms) -- the IP52 rating was a plus. Essentially, you shouldn't have to worry about being drenched in sweat or getting caught out in a downpour. And in our experience, both of those happened, and the earbuds kept on working.

Bottom line here, these have kept our high opinion of Jabra products and we wouldn't hesitate to offer a recommendation. The Jabra Rox wireless earbuds are currently available (in black or white) and priced at $129.95.

Lyft expands to 24 new cities across the US

Need a lift? If you do, Lyft might be a good option. The ride sharing service is expanding, adding 24 new markets to their ever expanding list. The total list of cities Lyft is now available in has reached 60, spanning a lot of areas you might not expect.

If the whole “getting into a car with strangers” sounds sketchy, that’s because it is. Lyft does their part to vet potential ride givers, having them pass a background check and provide DMV records. If that weren’t enough, riders can review and rank drivers — and only the top ranked drivers get the ability to offer rides.

The list of cities Lyft is expanding to spans the country, and doesn’t keep to the most major metro areas. While some are the metro area of choice for their geography, others are smaller areas that we were surprised to see on the list:

  • Albuquerque

  • Ann Arbor

  • Buffalo

  • Colorado Springs

  • Corpus Christi

  • Fresno

  • Jacksonville

  • Kansas City

  • Lexington

  • Lincoln

  • Louisville

  • Memphis

  • Modesto

  • New Haven

  • Newark

  • Oklahoma City

  • Omaha

  • Raleigh Durham

  • Rochester

  • San Bernardino

  • Spokane

  • Toledo

  • Tulsa

  • Virginia Beach

In addition to the new territories, Lyft is lowering all rates by 10% in celebration. It’s also the largest single day expansion in Lyft’s history, and they’ve got no plans on slowing down. The app is currently available in the Play Store, so check it out if you see your city on their list!

Verizon DROID DNA Kit Kat update detailed

HTC product manager Mo Versi confirmed the DROID DNA Kit Kat update earlier in the week. At the time we were told there was technical approval and that the update was expected to begin on April 24th. Of course, there was also confirmation about the update bringing Android 4.4.2 and Sense 5.5.

Well, it looks like the rollout has begun as expected. Today is April 24th and we have begun seeing reports of the update arriving on handsets. Equally as nice -- it seems Big Red has posted the changelog, which details a two update process. The first update is on the small size and sits at 18.3MB.

The first update is just a prep for the actual update. And for those curious -- the second update measures in at 618MB. Anyway, the changelog details what can be expected in terms of BlinkFeed, Location Settings, Gallery, Do Not Disturb, Lock Screen and the Music application.

Verizon DROID DNA users now have two options. The first is to sit back, wait for the notification to arrive and then follow the prompts. The second is the one we suspect more users will follow -- navigating to Settings -> Software update -> Status or check new, to get the process started.

Vic Gundotra leaving Google, has his “and then” moment

Vic Gundotra, who has championed Google+ since inception, is leaving Google. He confirmed the departure via his Google+ page, and CEO Larry Page further discussed the matter with Re/Code. Gundotra’s farewell touched on his passion, and finding what’s next. His departure is effective immediately.

It seems the genesis for Gundotra’s considering his departure was a tragic family accident, wherein his wife’s uncle was killed in an accident. A speech at the funeral touched on moving forward, and pushing on — words spoken from the heart. Gundotra hasn’t mentioned what led him to actually leave Google, but he was full of praise for everyone he’s worked with - and for.

Larry Page, speaking to Re/Code, said "Vic cut his teeth on our mobile apps and developer relations, turning Google’s disparate efforts into something great … And, walking onto the stage at I/O last year, it was amazing to see developers so excited about Google. These were vintage Vic projects. Then Vic built Google+ from nothing. There are few people with the courage and ability to start something like that and I am very grateful for all his hard work and passion.”

Who replaces Gundotra? Re/Code cites sources as saying it will be Dave Besbris, who is an exec currently working on Google+. Those who follow him online will know he’s an avid photographer who shares a lot of nature shots (easily the highlight of my Google+ stream). Besbris came to Google is 2008 after 10 years at AOL.

Vic Gundotra, in his Google+ announcement of departure, noted his now passed uncle would always start conversations with “and then?”. That’s how Vic leaves us, with a question of what’s next. Speaking personally, I’ve come to know Vic casually through various friends and colleagues. Always gracious, always kind, always a champion for what was next — the “and then” of Google, so to speak.

Lenovo Yoga Tablet 10 HD+ available today and priced at $369

Lenovo first announced the Yoga Tablet 10 HD+ back in February, during Mobile World Congress. Specs were announced at the time, and we even managed to spend a bit of hands-on time with the tablet. A release date and price weren't immediately available, however there is some good news for those who may have been waiting.

The Yoga Tablet 10 HD+ has arrived for purchase. The availability is direct from Lenovo and the price is $369. The one catch is the lead time for shipping. Details coming from Lenovo show that as being roughy 3 weeks. The 10 HD+ model was introduced as a follow-up to to the original Yoga Tablet 10.

This newly available model sports a 10.1-inch display at 1920 x 1200 and is powered by a Snapdragon APQ8028 processor that clocks in at 1.6GHz. Other highlights here include 32GB of internal storage, 2GB of RAM, a 1.6MP front-facing camera and an 8MP rear-facing camera. There is also a 9000 mAh battery which is touted as being able to provide up to 18 hours of run time.

We haven't spent enough time with the Yoga Tablet 10 HD+ to verify the battery claims, however this particular model seems to be a solid follow-up to the original. By that we mean Lenovo seems to have kept the highlights and improved upon the few items that needed some help.

While some of this will change, the overall design with built-in stand remains the same from the original model, which we reviewed last November. The video of our Yoga Tablet 10 HD+ hands-on from MWC also sits below.

IFTTT launches for Android

There had been a recent IFTTT sighting for Android, though at the time that was limited to a private beta group. But there is a bit of good news this morning; IFTTT has officially launched for Android. The app is available for free and can be found in the Google Play Store.

For those not as familiar, IFTTT stands for If This, Then That. It allows you to make something happen automatically. You create Recipes that work on the If This, Then That principle. Basically, you choose the "this" and the recipe will automatically trigger the "then that" aspect. You can think of IFTTT as a sort of trigger system.

We've always said IFTTT is somewhat limited by your imagination. Of course, you do have to keep your imagination set within the Channels offered by IFTTT. In the case of the Android app you'll have Channels based on location, notifications, and device settings as well as images, phone calls and text messages.

Some basic examples here include automatically saving images, or adjusting a setting when you enter a certain location. Taking that last bit a step further and you could use IFTTT to automatically turn WiFi off when you leave your home. Or alternatively, have it turn on when you enter your office or favorite coffee shop. A few other potential uses include automatically changing your device wallpaper, or automatically sending an email or text message.

*The app is on the process of rolling out, so this Google Play Store link may not be active just yet.

Samsung “Crystal Collection” Galaxy S5 revealed

We may still be following rumors for the Galaxy S5 Prime, however it looks like Samsung does have some special models in the works. The Galaxy S5 "Crystal Collection" handset was recently revealed by way of a short YouTube teaser. The video is just 12 seconds in length and shows a Galaxy S5 that is covered with crystals.

In this case those would be Swarovski crystals. Samsung has said the handset will be arriving in May, but so far we have yet to see anything in terms of market availability or pricing. But having said that, we aren't expecting this one to come cheap.

One hint does come with the YouTube channel this was posted on; Samsung Mobile Korea. This isn't the first time we've seen a crystal covered Galaxy device, and if we follow previous patterns -- we expect the availability to be limited. Samsung also didn't specify if, or how the specs would differ from the regular model Galaxy S5.

The overall design looks rather sparkly, but we have to look back towards the Galaxy S5 Prime as that is the one we are more interested in seeing. Recent rumors for the GS5 Prime suggest the handset will debut with a QHD display at 2560 x 1440. There was also talk of that handset being powered by the Exynos 5430 processor, which is ARM big.LITTLE and 64-bit.

Moves activity tracking app acquired by Facebook

News of another Facebook acquisition has arrived. The latest to join Facebook is Moves, the fitness and activity tracking app. For those not as familiar, Moves launched for Android back in September 2013. The app originally came available for iOS users in January 2013 and touted 2.5 million downloads during the time it was exclusive on the iPhone.

Nothing has been revealed in terms of a price, but the folks at Moves have issued a statement saying how they are "delighted to announce" the acquisition. The Moves app will remain available in the respective app stores, however the future seems a bit uncertain.

There was mention of how "the Moves experience will continue to operate as a standalone app." But on the flip side, there was also mention about how the Moves team will be "joining Facebook’s talented team to work on building and improving their products and services." Seems the key word may be 'their.'

While the future of the Moves app remains to be seen -- there was a bit that is just as important today. That bit involves the data you've been giving to Moves. The Moves team said "there are no plans" to commingle the data with Facebook.

Google Glass marketing head discusses the $1,500 price tag

Google Glass has gotten a fair bit of attention lately, both on the good and bad sides. One topic that seems to be falling on the latter side lately is public opinion. Many have a strong opinion about Glass, and while we generally look to the Explorers for a positive backing -- it seems one of the most vocal may be having some doubt.

That person is Robert Scoble, who recently attended Coachella and later made a point to say he didn't wear Glass at all during the event. That admission came as a result of a conversation Scoble overhead. It seems two people were talking about getting away from the guys wearing Glass. On Facebook, Scoble noted how that was strange at an event with so many other cameras.

"What is going on here in a world where I am carrying around a camera and EVERYONE uses their phones or a GoPro but Glass feels freaky and weird?"

Scoble also mentioned he believes "Google does have a problem." Interestingly, marketing head Ed Sanders spoke about this with Forbes. Sanders said they are suffering because Glass isn't widely available just yet and that is allowing for some misperceptions. That seems to suggest an easy answer; make Glass easier to get.

But Sanders also said that "was a deliberate choice." It seems the $1,500 price tag was intentionally done to limit the availability. Sanders touched on how the "high price point isn’t just about the cost of the device," but that it also has to do with getting "people who are going to be passionate about it.”

Following that train of thought and it seems to make sense. This seems especially true after the recent issues coming as a result of the XE16 (and 16.1) update. With Explorers invested so deep with price -- they will likely be more willing to provide feedback, submit bug reports and generally work to make issues known so they can be fixed.

Vonage ReachMe Roaming routes calls to eliminate international charges

The latest update for the Vonage Mobile app has arrived in the Google Play Store. This one is adding a new feature called "ReachMe Roaming" and it brings the promise of eliminating international roaming charges. Essentially, this setup means users will be able to receive incoming calls, but not have to worry about the possibility of overage charges while traveling.

Naturally, there are some good and some bad points here. First, to clarify, they are talking about routing your incoming mobile calls, which means you'll still be able to receive calls from your mobile number. On the flip side, those calls are being routed over WiFi, which means you'll need to be looking for WiFi hotspots to stay fully connected.

Vonage did say the ReachMe Roaming feature could be used over 3G/4G, but of course, that would incur data charges. Users will be able to toggle ReachMe Roaming on and off directly from the app settings. One other point worth mentioning, if you have it set to route only when on WiFi -- callers will be able to leave a voicemail, and you will get a notification once you are connected.

Along with ReachMe Roaming, this latest update also added call waiting, which will work with both voice and video calls. The Vonage Mobile app can be downloaded using this Google Play Store link.
