How Google Analytics helps you make better decisions for your apps

Posted by Russell Ketchum, Lead Product Manager, Google Analytics for Mobile Apps

Knowing how your customers use your app is the foundation to keeping them happy and engaged. It’s important to track downloads and user ratings, but the key to building a successful business is using data to dive deeper into understanding the full acquisition funnel and what makes users stick around.

Google Analytics is the easiest way to understand more about what your users are doing inside your app on Google Play, while also simultaneously tracking your users across the web and other mobile platforms. To show how Google Analytics can help, we've created a new "Analyze" section on the Android Developers website for you to check out. We provide guidance on how to design a measurement plan and implement effective in-app analytics – and take advantage of features only available between Google Play and Google Analytics.

The Google Play Referral Flow in Analytics

Google Analytics for mobile apps provides a comprehensive view into your app’s full user lifecycle, including user acquisition, composition, in app behavior, and key conversions. Our Analytics Academy course on mobile app analytics is also a great resource to learn the fundamentals.

Eltsoft LLC, a foreign language learning and education app developer for Android, recognized early on how impactful Google Analytics would have on the company's ability to quickly improve on its apps and meet user needs.

Analytics has really helped us to track the effectiveness of the changes to our app. I would say six months ago, that our success was a mystery. The data said we were doing well, but the whys were not clear. Therefore, we couldn’t replicate or push forward. But today, we understand what’s happening and can project our future success. We have not only the data, but can control certain variables allowing us to understand that data. - Jason Byrne, Eltsoft LLC

Here are some powerful tips to make the most of Google Analytics:

  1. Understand the full acquisition funnelUniquely integrated with the Google Play Developer Console, Google Analytics gives you a comprehensive view of the Google Play Referral Flow. By linking Analytics to the Developer Console, you can track useful data on how users move through the acquisition flow from your marketing efforts to the Google Play store listing to the action of launching the app. If you find that a significant number of users browse your app in Google Play, but don’t install it, for example, you can then focus your efforts on improving your store listing.

  2. Unlock powerful insights on in-app purchasesMonitoring in-app purchases in the Google Play Developer Console will show you the total revenue your app is generating, but it does not give you the full picture about your paying users. By instrumenting your app with the Google Analytics ecommerce tracking, you’ll get a fuller understanding of what paying users do inside your app. For example, you can find out which acquisition channels deliver users who stay engaged and go on to become the highest value users.

  3. Identify roadblocks and common paths with the Behavior FlowUnderstanding how users move through your app is best done with in-app analytics. With Google Analytics, you can easily spot if a significant percentage of users leave your app during a specific section. For example, if you see significant drop off on a certain level of your game, you may want to make that level easier, so that more users complete the level and progress through the game. Similarly, if you find users who complete a tutorial stay engaged with your app, you might put the tutorial front and center for first-time users.

  4. Segment your audience to find valuable insightsAggregated data can help you answer questions about overall trends in your app. If you want to unlock deeper insights about what drives your users’ behavior, you can slice and dice your data using segmentation, such as demographics, behavior, or install date. If something changes in one of your key metrics, segmentation can help you get to the root of the issue -- for example, was a recent app update unpopular with users from one geographic area, or were users with a certain device or carrier affected by a bug?

  5. Use custom data to measure what matters for your businessSimply activating the Google Analytics library gives you many out-of-the-box metrics without additional work, such as daily and monthly active users, session duration, breakdowns by country, and many more variables. However, it’s likely that your app has many user actions or data types that are unique to it, which are critical to building an engaged user base. Google Analytics provides events, custom dimensions, and custom metrics so you can craft a measurement strategy that fits your app and business.

  6. No more one-size-fits-all ad strategyIf you’re a developer using AdMob to monetize your app, you can now see all of your Analytics data in the AdMob dashboard. Running a successful app business is all about reaching the right user with the right ad or product at the right time. If you create specific user segments in Google Analytics, you can target each segment with different ad products. For example, try targeting past purchasers with in-app purchase ads, while monetizing users who don’t purchase through targeted advertising.

By measuring your app performance on a granular level, you will be able to make better decisions for your business. Successful developers build their measurement plan at the same time as building their app in order to set goals and track progress against key success metrics, but it’s never too late to start.

Choose the implementation that works best for your app to get started with Google Analytics today and find out more about what you can do in the new “Analyze” section of developers.android.com.

HTC One M9 leaked photos that looks like it could be legit

As we sit anxiously and count the days till March 1st for Mobile World Congress, we are surprised to see leaked photos of what HTC could be calling the new One M9. From the looks of it, it appears the new One M9 still retains the smooth metal chassis from the current model One M8. We can see that there are noticeable differences with the supposedly prototype M9 - trimmer all around, bezels are slimmer, the physical body seems to have lost weight and a square camera versus a circular camera on the current One M8.

HTC has delivered a great line with the One family. Following up on the One M8, there was no need to change too much, and for that we thank you - if these pictures prove to be real. HTC knows what consumers like, and they’re not trying to fix anything that's not broken. Give us the same body style as the famous One M8, throw in a few tweaks here and there, and call it a day.

As you may have already heard, the new One M9 takes on the alias “HTC Hima”. The secret machine is expected to sport a 5-inch display (1920 x 1080 resolution), powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 810 processor with 3GB of memory. Rumors say that the “HTC Hima” will pack Adreno 430 graphics, and should be running on Android 5.0 Lollipop.

Speculation continues, but it's suggested that the new square camera could be a boosting a large 20.7-megapixel camera in the back and a glamorous 13-megapixel camera in the front.

Like we said, don’t fix anything that’s not broken. HTC has focused on audio output since the One M7 introduced BoomSound, and as the leaked photos indicate, it seems HTC may carry over the BoomSound technology integrated in the current One M8. We can only hope that stays true, as the dual front speakers were one of the best standout features from other competitors in the mobile market.

Physical construction of the new machine doesn’t seem to steer far away from the current One M8. From the leaked photos provided by Nowhereelse, we see metal construction, tapered edges, microUSB and headphones jacks at the bottom, slim plastic antenna strips, and the appealing sleek brushed metal body.

With just a few weeks counting down to MWC in Barcelona, Spain, we are are eagerly waiting to here what HTC has planned for the new One M9 “HTC Hima”.

Chrome OS to allow external drive to cloud file transfers

Google seems to be happy with Chrome OS that it regularly updates the platform. Just a couple of months ago, the search giant added seven more Android apps to the OS. Before that another update for Stable Channel was released with MTP. Recently added is Remote Desktop sharing and without leaving Chrome, you can now run Linux in another window.

Google has not fully launched the new features because the two are still under development but it shows that Chrome OS may be heading a new direction. Soon enough, Chrome OS may be able to send files from an SD card or external drive straight to a cloud storage too. Google Drive may get files from a Chrome OS-powered notebook to save directly on cloud. This may also include management feature for uploads although we're not sure about this one yet.

The feature is known this early as 'cloud import'. This eliminates some steps in doing cloud uploads from a Chromebook. Simply put, it's like automatically syncing files from one mobile device to a cloud storage. But instead of loading the files from an SD card to the computer then to the cloud, you may skip the desktop part so it becomes SD card (or external drive) straight to Google Drive.

Let's wait for Google to make an official announcement as we're not really sure if the said feature will become a reality. Let's just wait and see.

How Xiaomi beat Apple, Samsung in China, and soon, the world

Chinese upstart and smartphone manufacturer Xiaomi recently revealed the secret behind its surprisingly massive success — with more than 60 million units sold for 2014 alone — that has allowed it to become the world’s third top-selling phone maker, beating out more established brands Apple and Samsung in China.

No, it’s not actually the plush rabbit dolls that drive Xiaomi’s sales and revenue figures. Contrary to Kung Fu Panda’s “Secret Ingredient Noodle Soup” (“There is no secret ingredient!”) and to conspiracy theories, Xiaomi's VP for International, Hugo Barra, has revealed in a recent interview that the company’s recipe for sales success is quite simple: A small portfolio, combined with longer average selling time per device, that allows the smartphone maker to make significant price concessions.

On average, Barra says, a Xiaomi phone stays on the shelf between 18 to 24 months, allowing it to undergo three to four rounds of price cuts. In addition to this, the company continues to sell older devices—as well as their tweaked versions—at reduced prices even after it has launched newer models. The longer shelf-life allows Xiaomi to secure superbly better component deals with its suppliers, where component costs decrease considerably over time and provide bigger margins on returns, allowing for price reductions.

For comparison, the company’s flagship Mi smartphone sells at around USD$300, while the higher-end iPhones and the similarly-priced Samsung Galaxy and Note devices sell beyond the USD$1000 range. Apple can only drool with envy, however, as Xiaomi continues to dominate the Chinese market despite the boost from its highly-touted iPhone 6, according to consumer trendspotter Kantar Worldpanel. In fact, Apple and Samsung have more reason for concern, as Xiaomi has started to test the waters in other Asian markets, with forecast sales of 100 million devices for this year. With its unique pricing model and a planned modular phone reportedly in the pipeline, these two companies would probably do well to look behind their backs as Xiaomi looks set to conquer the world soon.

Kisha is the 1st smart umbrella that you can’t (shouldn’t) lose

Umbrellas may be part of a top five list of things most often lost by people. But with all the technological advances we have today, there must be a way to help us, well. not lose them all the time. Kisha claims that it is the umbrella that can never be lost, with the help of an app that connects to your mobile device. Well, just make sure you don't lose your connected smartphone or tablet too.

The umbrella is connected to your device through an app that will send you an alert when you leave it somewhere, like a restaurant, a park, or your house. If the connection between your umbrella and device is lost, it tells you that you've lost it. Aside from that, the app will also give you the weather forecast for the day and even the upcoming days so you know if you should take your umbrella with you or not.

There's another "smart" umbrella in the market, with Blunt umbrellas teaming up with Tile, a tag marker company. Once you put the NFC marker on your umbrella, you can pair it with your Android device and if you go beyond 100 feet, it will let you know that you've probably misplaced your umbrella. But Kisha is different because it doesn't need an NFC tag anymore but you just pair it with your device through the app.

The umbrella itself is 100% windproof and corrosion-proof, with "perfect stitching" as well as 16 polyutherane ribs. It would cost you $59 and it comes with free shipping, as well as a 3 year warranty.
