Trial Xtreme 4: trial bike riding through your mobile device

Extreme bike riding is probably one of the toughest (not to mention dangerous) but coolest individual sports around. But what if you're not built (or are too lazy) to endure the training needed to become a great biker? What if the only exercise you get is moving your finger back and forth a screen or flexing your wrists by tilting and turning your mobile device? Then the solution to that is the latest edition in the Trial Xtreme series.

Trial Xtreme 4 is the latest in what they say is "the best trial bike riding game ever." You get to experience over 70 levels of motoring fun, all while not moving from the comfort of your seat. This physics based game takes bike riding into sometimes ridiculous levels, but hey, as long as you don't hurt yourself (except for spraining a finger), then it should be fun yes? The responsive controls will help you get through all the crazy obstacles you need to face. You can also upgrade your bike, its abilities, and performance, depending how much game cash you have.

If you want to race against other bike riders from around the world, you can enter the extreme tournaments arena where you can win prizes. And if you're the top driver, you can get yourself some "sponsorship deals" and earn additional cash. If you feel like betting on other drivers, you can choose to play the extreme duels mode, which seems pretty self-explanatory. You can also go through the extreme courses, where you just ride for the sheer joy of moving through an insane 3D arena.

You can get Trial Xtreme 4 for free from the Google Play Store. But there are also in-app purchases available so be careful, unless you don't mind paying for some things you would need or rather, want, in the game.

Medieval Wars tests your strategic mind in the Middle Ages

HeroCraft, makers of the Strategy & Tactics series, is building upon their relative success with the game series by releasing a 3rd game in the Strategy & Tactics mold called “Medieval Wars”. No prizes for guessing the time period of the game, as it is obviously set in medieval Europe.

As players of the game, you will be asked to lead the armies of England and France, with a nod to the armies of the Crusades as well, in three in-game campaigns. If you’ve played the Strategy & Tactics series before, then the gameplay is very much similar. For those not familiar, the game takes some ideas from the famous strategy board game Risk – where you need to knock out other armies to take over regions.

If you’re expecting explosions or amazing graphics, this is not the game for you. The game is built on pure strategy on hand drawn maps, but it is far from boring if you like these kinds of games. You will need to make decisions based on the capabilities of your armies. Should you divide and conquer or keep your forces together?

The game will highlight the more popular battles in medieval Europe, including the Norman Invasion, the Crusades, the Hundred Years’ War, the Reconquista, and the War of the Roses among others. For USD$2.99, you can download the premium game from the Google Play Store (check link below) which will give you historical campaigns, independent historical scenarios, and whole lot more.

Or, take on the excellent tower defense game OTTTD (Over The Top Tower Defense) from SMG Studios—which works for you really well if you love Michael Bay-esque explosions on Android while battling flying, undead sharks and commanding a squad of Earth’s finest heroes.

Normally, you’d get these games at around 30 bucks, but with Humble Mobile Bundle 10, you get to name your price. The best thing about this arrangement is that a good chunk of the proceeds goes to two equally-deserving causes: the World Land Trust, and the Extra Life / Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals. You even get to choose which cause to support.

Since moving away from the Google Play Store late last year, Humble Bundle has continued to offer excellent game titles at rates that cater to your liking—and your budget. So make your time-wasting a little more worthwhile by having games you want at the price you wish for, while being comforted with the knowledge that you’re making someone else’s life better by parting with your hard-earned money.

Motorola releases app for managing voice mails

When you think of voice mail, it's not something that would excite you or would make you think of high-tech visual apps. All you would want is something that is practical and something that works. That is probably what Motorola was thinking when they created the Visual Voice Mail, which is not the most exciting app around, but gets (or should) the job done.

The Visual Voice Mail just has one function, and that is to make it easier for you to access your voice mail without having to dial through your phone. You will be able to access them through the app directly, which will be included in your carrier plan. It will show you a list of voice mail messages (both read and unread). You can delete those that are useless already and manage them directly on the app without having to go through the usual voice instructions on your phone.

The app is truly basic and does not have any kind of design or feature that should enhance the experience of using and managing your voice mails. And it also does not work with all of the Motorola X devices (particularly the 2013 and 2014). But this may probably be due to the fact that this might be a Verizon-only app as seen on one of the screen shots on the app page.

So if you're on Verizon, you can download the Visual Voice Mail app for free from the Google Play Store. No in-app purchases necessary, although of course, you need to be under a carrier plan to be able to use and access your voice mail.

Official-looking Lollipop firmware for Samsung Galaxy S4 leaked

We all know that for all of Samsung’s tech nous, the South Korean company can’t very well launch the most recent Lollipop firmware versions for all their top-of-the-line devices at the same time. This would be confusing as heck for them and so we understand (grudgingly) the delay. However, leaks like this – an official-ish Android 5.0.1 version of the firmware for the Samsung Galaxy S4 – keep us excited about the official release.

The ROM in our sights is purportedly an original source firmware – meaning that it’s supposedly from Samsung – which is an Android 5.0.1 build for Galaxy S4 devices with model numbers GT-I9500/9502/9508/9508v. The build was released via XDA and the good people there have basically confirmed that it appears to be legitimate official Samsung firmware, and not the recent Aurora ports of the leaked Note 3 software.

A few caveats about this build – first that it is a Chinese region build. This means that even though English is available as a language, there will be system messages that will appear in Chinese. Also, the build lacks a stock English keyboard, but as you well know, this is fixable.

Users have reported that the build is otherwise functional – regular Samsung features like NFC, sbeam, GPS, Bluetooth, 3G DATA, Wi-Fi, all sensors for motion and light, hotspot function, Multiwindow all seem to be working. Good news, eh? If you feel the need to see this ROM on your Galaxy S4, head on over to the official XDA thread at the source link below. And as always kids, play nice and safe – always have a working backup of your phone.

HTC One M7 gets a Sense 6 Lollipop ROM

Great news especially for those still unwilling to part ways with their old-ish HTC One M7 smartphones either for practical or sentimental reasons. XDA developer "LlabTooFer" confirmed that the MaximusHD 50.0.0 update, which the developer is dubbing as the “world’s first custom Android 5.0.2 and Sense 6.0 ROM” for the HTC One M7, is finally available.

The heavily-customized MaximusHD ROM is based on Android Lollipop 5.0.2 and Sense 6.0, with build number LRX22F. As if the significantly-better-than-Android Sense 6.0 isn’t enough, this custom mod coupled with Android Lollipop can thus be expected to let you squeeze significantly more out of your trustworthy and enjoyably reliable M7 unit. Updated kernel and OEM apps plus multiple pages support and an added settings search can be counted on to enhance the performance of your first generation HTC One smartphone. Reworked installation and aroma scripts and overall performance improvements are also included in this mod to make sure you can teach your old dog of an M7 new tricks that could probably put newer models to shame.

The update also promises to make your media experience with the HTC One M7 significantly better, as the MaximusHD offers excellent improvements for both camera and audio. The custom ROM adds new camera modes to your HTC One smartphone that can help you push the creative envelope while capturing your best (or maybe even your worst) moments to make for fond memories. All these while lessening the strain on your unit’s power supply, as the MaximusHD also carries battery improvements that can allow you to stretch your unit’s capabilities without having you looking for a charging port every now and then. For more information on the installation and the downloads needed, check the official XDA thread here.

You won’t need to root your M7 unit after installing the recommended firmware (7.15.401.1) as it has already been rooted for your added convenience. Like any tinkering job, it is best to back up your precious data as a full wipe is required to install the MaximusHD ROM. It would also be a good idea to check the compatibility of this mod for your unit to avoid any potential headaches, as it has also been announced late last year that the last-generation model of the HTC One M7 is slated to receive the Android Lollipop 5.0 update any time now.

WhatsApp update now “respects” priority mode for Lollipop devices

One of the new things that Android users can expect from the Android 5.0 Lollipop update is a mode called Priority which filters those you've marked as important and gives you alerts even when you are basically on silent or do not disturb mode. But popular messenger WhatsApp seemed to not be applying that mode previously, but a new update to the app has made all things right.

Previously, even when you've set Priority contacts, WhatsApp would still play notifications even though you've put it on Priority mode. That made it pretty annoying when you're watching a movie for example and it would still play through the media volume. But this latest update has finally solved the problem and now respects this new feature from Google, so you can just receive notifications from those contacts that really matter when you're doing something and you don't want to be disturbed by constant dings.

If you've just recently been Lollipop-ized and don't know yet how to use this Priority setting, you can activate it from the volume slider. You can choose either to set it just for one hour (if you're taking a catnap for example) or if you need longer, you can choose indefinitely. To choose the apps that can go through, you need to go to the bottom of the Sounds and Notification listing and set it as priority. You'll know that your smartphone is in that mode when there's a star on the upper right part of the screen just next to the signal bars.

If you don't have WhatsApp yet, you can download it from the Google Play Store for free. It also has in-app purchases, like stickers and themes, but if you're just looking for a basic messenger, then the basic free version should be enough.
