PayPal update: stay logged in, fingerprint scan for Samsung devices

A new update from PayPal will help you have easier access to the online payment system, especially if you use it frequently during the day and if you're secure enough that only you have access to your smartphone or tablet. If you have a higher end Samsung device, you will now be able to use your fingerprint scanner to open your PayPal app and account.

This feature has actually been present in the PayPal app distributed through Samsung's app store. But now, it is also available for the one you got through the Google Play Store. If you have a Galaxy S5, Galaxy Note 4, Galaxy Alpha and Galaxy Tab S, you can just use your finger swipe authentication when making purchases on your mobile device using PayPal. No need to always enter your password when buying stuff, which is of course a necessary security precaution, but can be tiresome (especially if you have a long-winded password).

For those who don't have Samsung devices, the update also brings to you a feature that can be both scary and easy. You now have the option to stay logged in to PayPal on your phone, especially if you use it a lot during the day. But remember, you should only do this if you know that no one else will be able to use your phone or else you might find yourself with unknown transactions on your PayPal.

The update is slowly rolling out to users, but the change log indicates that some features might not be available for those outside the UK. If you don't have it yet, you can download the PayPal app from the Google Play Store for free.

Download and Install Every CM App with CM App Installer

CM App Installer

Over the years, CyanogenMod has bloomed into an absolute powerhouse with its ROMs appearing on a number of fantastic devices such as the OnePlus One and the Oppo N1. Because of its popularity and wide usage, it isn’t very surprising that many people have grown accustomed to and have developed a preference for the custom apps that they’ve packaged into their ROMs. Unfortunately, if you own a phone that is running another ROM, or does not ship with CyanogenMod, the only way that you can use these custom CM apps is to manually download and install them yourself.

With this said, CM App Installer is an app that makes this process an absolute breeze. Developed by XDA Forum Member TheMentalGoose, the app will pull the most updated versions of CM apps and try to install them into your device’s system. The app will try to do this via either a non-rooted or rooted method, however it is recommended that you try the non-rooted method first. This is because the rooted method was designed to be only a very last resort as it may possibly cause errors. Furthermore, CM App Installer saves you the hassle of backing up any CM apps you may currently have installed as it does this automatically.

So, if you’ve always had a soft spot for CM apps, head over to the CM App Installer application thread for more information.

Cyanogen clarifies OnePlus situation in India

Those who have been following the latest mobile developments in India might have noticed a small drama unfolding. Chinese startup OnePlus has just targeted the sub-continent but, at the same time, Cyanogen, Inc, who develops the OnePlus One's software, struck up an exclusive deal with Indian OEM Micromax. After some speculation, as well as a blog post from OnePlus, the Android ROM maker is now clearing the air and explaining how things will proceed.

The issue at hand is that Cyanogen has chosen Micromax as the exclusive hardware partner for Cyanogen OS, the commercial version of the popular CyanogenMod Android ROM, in India. This coincided with OnePlus' own entry into the Indian market, via a partnership with Amazon India. For its part, OnePlus says it was surprised and dismayed at Cyanogen's move, since it theoretically meant that OnePlus' would be customers in India would be bereft of Cyanogen updates.

Not quite, according to Cyanogen. It says that all devices around the world running its OS will continue to receive OTA updates, even in India. So just because a OnePlus One happens to be in the country doesn't mean it will suddenly be left out of the update party. That said, other than the OnePlus One, those in India should probably not expect new commercial devices running Cyanogen OS except from Mircomax and its new YU brand.

That is definitely welcome news for OnePlus One fans in India and is definitely a more reasonable expectation. What remains to be seen now is whether OnePlus will still push through with its plans to have its own OS for OnePlus Two/OnePlus One Two, which might still be likely if relationships between the two startups have indeed taken a downturn.

Experience Flow Throughout Sony Xperia Z1 System UI

Cosmic Flow animation

The ‘Cosmic Flow’ animation and theme were first introduced with the 2012 line of Xperia devices from Sony. They were undoubtedly quite visually striking, particularly the multicolored live wallpapers. And although Sony has moved onto the more reserved and mild ‘Experience Flow’ theme as seen on their newer devices such as the Xperia Z3, it retains the central motif of flowing lines and curves. If you’re a big fan of the theme and would rather it to appear throughout your Xperia Z1, you may want to check out the Cosmic Flow Animation Background mod.

Developed by XDA Senior Member kalel2012, the mod allows you to have the ‘experience flow’ animation seen in the boot animation and live wallpapers appear in the background of your system apps, such as the settings, phonebook, and the pull-down notification area. The mod was based on framework version 157, but should also work with 155 and 108. It can be installed by simply flashing the provided ZIP package through a custom recovery, and if you want to revert the effects, there’s a flashable ZIP package for that too.

If this looks like something you’ve been looking for on your Xperia Z1, check out the Cosmic Flow Animation mod thread for more information.

Status automatically lets your friends know what you’re doing

If you don't want to flood your friends' Facebook or Twitter timelines with inconsequential updates like "at home" or "driving" or "out of town" but you would actually like them to know it, then there's a separate app for that. Status - auto status updates somewhat simplifies the process and does that for you.

The app works even without you manually updating it. Using motion sensors and the locations you set for home, office, school, etc, it will then work in the background and let your friends or family members where you are or what you're doing. Some of the status available include "out and about", "low battery", "driving", "in a meeting" and many more. But lest you think that this will broadcast it to the whole world, you can choose which people you'd like to see your status or activity. So, don't worry, stalkers cannot see your location or what you're up to.

An update to the app brings you some polling questions, like asking you if you want to know what your partner or best friend is doing, etc. You can even now favorite your contacts so that they will be prioritized when you view your timeline. You can even call contacts from within the app.

While this is a pretty nifty app, especially if you don't want your friends to disturb you when you're busy or when you're too lazy to update your family members where you are, it will only work if your contacts or friends are actually using the app. And given how many social networks most of them are already on, it will take some convincing powers to get them here. But you can still give it a try (and tell them to give it a try to) and download Status from the Google Play Store for free.

Internet access isn't required for the app to work and it is capable of solving simple or complex equations. The app supports over 250 mathematical functions. The photo calculator currently supports Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication, Fractions, Division, Inequalities, Powers, Square Roots, Trigonometry, Algebra, Simplification, and Basic Algorithms.

The app also supports polynomials, calculus, equation systems, complex math and more. Graphing, calculus, equation systems, and the ability to scan and answer hand written problems are coming in a future version.

3G is dead (dying), long live LTE for Verizon?

They said it back in 2011, but now it seems like the start of the slow (and we mean slow) death of 3G is upon us, at least as far as Verizon is concerned. It seems that the carrier has been cannibalizing its old CDMA EV-DO systems to make way for a third distinct LTE network, after launching the first two back in 2010.

Verizon spokeswoman Debra Lewis more or less confirmed that they are testing LTE on previously inactive PCS bands (as noticed by Gigaom's resident "network spotter" Milan Milanovic) but said they cannot specify yet which locations are testing them. She also did not indicate a specific date as to a possible commercial launch. But way back in 2011, CTO Tony Melone already indicated that they will eventually shut down 3G to make way for 4G.

However, that future is still a long way off, since 41% of the devices on Verizon are still running on 2G and 3G. While 80% of their traffic is actually on LTE already, you cannot ignore the fact that 2G is still their primary voice network. So it will still take some time before they can actually make do without EV-DO systems.

But Verizon is definitely moving into that direction, as they will eventually shifting their voice traffic into the voice-over-LTE service (VoLTE), which they started offering earlier this year. A few weeks ago, they also announced that by 2015, they will be offering VoLTE interoperability with AT&T, which will be the first of its kind among the US carriers. This is part of Verizon's goal to have a single network technology for all its voice and data services.
