LG G3 Oversharpening Fix Just Got Simpler with Aroma Script

G3 oversharpening

A couple of days ago, we reported on a much needed and welcomed fix to the oversharpening issue LG G3 owners have been reporting about their screens. The issue seems to have manifested from the high resolution quad HD display of the device, which on the software side, has a noticeable sharpening effect (much like in software like Photoshop). This, just until recently, could not be removed.

This improved fix comes from the same creator of the originally reported fix, XDA Recognized Developer Skin1980, who explains that the original fix consisted of kernels built from source. This means that they weren’t as good as stock kernels, as evidenced by the issue of a long boot time. Hence, Skin1980 has come up with an AROMA script which seeks to solve iron out any issues the first fix may have had. All you have to do is flash the provided ZIP package through a custom recovery, choose how much sharpening you want on your screen, and reboot. Make sure however, to make a backup of your boot partition just in case something goes wrong.

This improved fix may also be compatible with all kernels, including AOSP, but this hasn’t been tested yet, so Skin1980 does welcome any feedback.

If you’re getting a bit sick of the oversharpening issue, head over to the G3 improved oversharpening fix thread to get started.

LG G Flex 2 tipped to launch at CES 2015

It's hard to believe, but we are only a month away from the annual CES show in Las Vegas where hoards of new gadgets and electronics launch each year. With the show so close, the rumors are swirling about what products we may see at the show. One of the rumors says that LG will launch the G Flex 2 at CES 2015 next month.

The rumor doesn't bring much in the way of details about the device with word being that the G Flex 2 will be a major update to the original device. A higher resolution plastic-based OLED screen is tipped while the device will become smaller overall.

The original G Flex packed a large 6-inch screen and presumably, the screen size will remind the same. Full HD resolution is expected for the G Flex 2, lower resolution was one of the downsides of the original G Flex. The curved profile that gives the G Flex 2 its name will certainly be carried forward.

That flexible design allows the phone to be bent slightly without causing damage, something that can’t always be said for larger smartphones, I'm looking at you iPhone 6 Plus. With CES 2015 only a month away, we will keep an ear out for more details on the LG G Flex 2.

Heavenstrike Rivals is a free-to-play PVP fighting game

There wasn’t much fanfare about the new Heavenstrike Rivals fighting game that Square Enix released just a few days back that we almost missed it, but we didn’t (ha!). The game is a PVP (peer-vs-peer) style fighting game that allows users to challenge their online friends to fighting battles.

The game lets players pick from more than 230 characters available in the game – and these characters can be trained, they can fight in regular events, and enter in special competitions. Players can regularly fight with friends online so that their characters build up XP.

Of course, the game has AI fighters if you’re not the type to get into online fighting games with your friends – but trust us, the “beating your friends” part is one of the things that makes this game fun. The game’s artwork is designed by Ryoma Ito, the same one who directed the art for Final Fantasy Tactics.

Looking at the visuals, the game certainly looks the part. If you want to try it, the game is a free download from the Google Play Store link below.

The Shadow Sun is an epic RPG, now on Android

The team behind this epic RPG called “The Shadow Sun” had a lot of gaming cred behind them, having designed that highly enjoyable Neverwinter Nights 2 expansion “Mysteries of Westgate”. But the game was announced in 2010, and it took a while for it to get here. Now, it’s completely blown up (in a good way) on iOS and serious Android gamers are finally going to have a crack at it.

This is not your usual mobile RPG of the casual gaming type – the game was designed to emulate the depth of PC RPG gaming. “With The Shadow Sun, our goal was to make a high quality RPG for mobile devices in the spirit of the classics from PC and console,” Alan Miranda, CEO of Ossian Studios. “We are thrilled to bring the game to Android gamers.”

The game requires some robust graphics chips, so this might be one for the higher end devices. But it’s definitely worth it, with serious gamers being wowed by the rich story and gameplay, the huge world the game resides in, and the immersive and numerous side-quests available to players of the game.

The Shadow Sun is available for the download price of USD$4.99. But trust us, if you are the hardcore RPG gaming type, this will be one of the most enjoyable games you could have on a mobile platform.

LG G Pad 8.3 Google Play Edition gets Lollipop update

And still on the race of manufacturers trying to get Android 5.0 to their devices, the good people at the XDA developers forum have given word that the LG G Pad 8.3 already has a Lollipop update rolling out at this moment. That’s good news for all the users of the said tablet, as there was very little news about the tablet being upgraded to Android Lollipop.

So if you are interested in getting the update, a notification should be showing up on your G Pad 8.3 at this point. If so, this will be a straightforward process of downloading the update and waiting until it gets installed. Exercise patience, it could take a while.

But if you still don’t have the OTA notification, you can head on over to the XDA thread we got the news from (via the source link) and download, then install, the Android Lollipop update manually. Of course it is not designed to be used that way, so always keep backups if needed.

The thread starter has also provided a handy “return to stock 4.4.4” link there on the thread if needed. Check out the source link below.

Sum It! puts your math skills to the test in a fun way

Some say there are two kinds of people in this world: those who cringe when they see numbers and those who get a thrill when they see numerical symbols, whether it's in an excel file, an infographic, or even a mobile game. If you're part of the latter, then you'll definitely enjoy a new Android game where all you can see are numbers (and some shapes and colors too).

Welcome to the world of Sum It!, a number puzzle game where you don't really need to be a mathematical genius to win. It would help if you can do quick and simple mental math though. The object of the game is to bring the number of your box to zero. You can do that by sliding it over circles that have numerical values as well. The value of the circle is deducted from the value of the square. You go on and on, until the box becomes zero. Sounds simple enough? Well, you should know that not all games are that simple.

The popularity of games like Sudoku (both the offline and online versions), 2048 and others has given rise to the emergence of minimalistic math and numbers games. The graphics are simple, the rules are basic, but if you really love numbers, then these games are definitely your Angry Birds and your Plants vs Zombies.

Sum It! is available for free from the Google Play Store. A minor update has made the game available for even more devices, with some necessary bug fixes. There are no in-app purchases needed, so feel free to enjoy your numbers without worrying about dollars.

McDonalds tries to stem rise of french fries theft with new app feature

This has probably happened to you once or twice (or more if you have greedy friends). You're sitting there, just enjoying your good ole french fries from McDonalds, when suddenly, from the corner of your eye, you see a hand reaching for your fries, and you are powerless to stop them. Well, if you live in Canada, the fastfood chain is giving you back the power to stop fry crimes or "frimes" with a new feature in their app: the Fry Defender.

In a witty and funny marketing move, McDonalds Canada will let your device masquerade as a phone in order to stop people from stealing your fries. With "cutting edge motion detector technology", it not only catches the fry thief, but even gives you the evidence against them by catching them in action. Simply turn on the Fry Defender feature on the McDonalds app and place it near your fries. When someone attempts to get fries off of you, your phone will sound an alarm (you have three options for the sound) and flash red.

The app will even take a snapshot of the thief in action and you can upload it on your favorite social media sites. You can use #stopfrytheft and warn others about potential fry thefts in their area. You can even build a photo grid if there is a gang of fry thieves that might victimize your other friends and loved ones.

The McDonalds Canada app also has other "normal" features, like nutritional information on all your favorite food, restaurant locator, and the whole menu available. But admit it, the only reason why you'd want to have the app would be to catch your friends as they attempt to divest you of your hard-earned fries. Unfortunately, the app is only available in Canada but let's hope it's just for now. The world needs more fry defenders.
