New Xiaomi teasers point to premium Xiaomi Mi 4i

This will be new and exciting times for China-based manufacturer Xiaomi, regarded by most as one of the fastest growing manufacturers from China due to their build quality. On April 23, Xiaomi is scheduled to unveil a new device, and for the first time, the unveiling will be outside of China, in New Delhi, India. The device is expected to be the Xiaomi Mi 4i.

xiaomi_mi4i_teaser1

The Xiaomi Mi 4i, from the naming convention and what the company has done before, should be expected with slightly lower specs than the flagship Xiaomi Mi 4. Xiaomi is calling this one a global device not just because of the New Delhi launch, but because of extended 4G LTE network support that the device will feature. The teasers are pretty standard – the first one above highlights camera quality.

xiaomi_mi4i_teaser2

The second teaser above hypes on battery capacity. Most high end devices have a problem with the current Li-ion technology in batteries where slim form factors usually mean lower battery capacity. Let’s see if Xiaomi has resolved that issue.

xiaomi_mi4i_teaser3

The last teaser, shown above, is a little vague but will probably mean premium quality build in the new device. Luckily for us, we don’t have to wait that long to see what Xiaomi is up to with this new device. Stick around these pages for more news on this new Xiaomi offering.

Back up and restore your WhatsApp account on Google Drive

It seems that the folks over at WhatsApp are keeping pretty busy, bringing us updates every few days or so. The latest one, still in beta and not yet available on the Google Play Store update, allows you to back-up your conversations onto Google Drive. That means if you need "evidence" about a conversation you had that your friend is denying, you can just pull a file that you backed up on the cloud.

Version 2.12.45 can be found on the APK Mirror, even if the official page doesn't show the latest version yet. After downloading the update, go to the settings, chat settings, chat backup, and then you'll be able to see Google Drive settings. You can choose the frequency with which to back it up, which is daily, weekly, or monthly. You can also choose whether you want to use Wi-Fi or Wi-Fi or Cellular when you're backing up your data. 4AM everyday is when WhatsApp usually backs up its servers, but you can still choose back up now if you can't wait for that.

The messaging app has brought successive updates for users in the past few weeks. Just last week, they finally updated to Material Design, bringing better icons and layouts as well. The free voice calls through the app were also finally enabled during the latter part of March, after weeks of trying it out with selected users only.

As we mentioned, this latest update is still not yet live on the official download page, but you can already side-load it onto your device. Just click on this link to get the APK.

Android 5.1.1 Lollipop almost ready for Nexus 9, WiFi Nexus 7

You may be excited that your device is finally getting the Android 5.0 Lollipop update but others are already getting Android 5.0.1 (Moto E, and Moto 4 with 4G LTE, Galaxy Note 4, Note Edge, Galaxy S5, Galaxy S4) and Android 5.0.2 (LG G2 from T-Mobile and AT&T, Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge, Nexus 7, original Moto X). Several mobile devices have even received Android 5.1 already like the Nexus 5Nexus Player, HTC One (M7), Moto G GPE,  LG G Pad 8.3 GPE, and the Sony Z Ultra GPE. And to further burst your bubble, sorry, but Android 5.1.1 is almost ready.

Google can confuse us with all these software update versions and build numbers but don't worry, the Android 5.1.1 isn't official yet so you can have time to catch up. Google has not yet officially announced the Android 5.1.1 release. It was only spotted on an Android Audio Latency info page showing the build numbers LMY47S and LMY47W are ready for the Nexus 9 and Nexus 7 2013 (WiFi variant).

Android 5.1.1

The Google Nexus 9 has yet to receive Android 5.0 Lollipop but the Nexus 7 is already enjoying Android 5.1 despite reports of units being bricked after the software update. This Android 5.1.1 being sighted on an official Android page also means a new version is coming soon.

It may still be under development and may just be a minor but Google is set to make an announcement. Before it happens, we hope to see the Nexus 9 getting some Android 5.1 sweetness but then again it's way better if it gets the Android 5.1.1 version as its first taste of Lollipop.

Square Enix’s Masters of the Masks: different yet typical

Square Enix snuck in a mobile game while we were still busy obsessing over various incarnations of Final Fantasy, both on the big machines and hopefully on mobile as well. But its surprise game, Masters of the Masks, couldn't be farther from whatever preconceived notion you might have of a Square Enix mobile game, incorporating some things that the game developer has never done on mobile before. And yet, at the same time, it is because of those very same things that make MotM actually closer to a typical mobile game than anything Square Enix has done before.

The plot thickens ... or not

Square Enix's classic games, particularly the Final Fantasy series, and even some of its more modern mobile exclusives, have been praised for their deep and well thought out story lines and characters. Don't go trying to find any of those here, however. It's your typical "something bad happened and it's up to you to save the world" kind of plot. Almost like The One Ring, a super powerful Mask was created that gave godlike powers to its bearer, which is never a good thing. So the Mask was shattered into many masks, and now it's up to you to collect and fight for them in order to defeat the ultimate baddie. Of course, each mask you get grants you powers and fuse masks to get even better powers.

motm-1

It's a thin premise, but at least it's there. Good thing that isn't exactly what makes this game rather fascinating.

If looks could kill

As you may have noticed above, this is again not your typical Square Enix mobile game, which usually falls in either of two categories. One is a simple port of old school retro 8 or 16 bit graphics, ala Final Fantasy I to VI. The other is full on 3D exemplified by the Chaos Rings series. In Masks, however, Square Enix went for a look that was neither here nor there. The closest thing to describe it would be like a Western (yes, not Japanese) cartoon turned into a game. Yes, dialogs are delivered in Japanese visual novel fashion, but the aesthetics are not what you'd usually associate with that region. Everything is cel shaded, either in the character portraits or in the 3D models.

motm-2 motm-3 motm-4 motm-5 motm-6

Not that it's never been done before, but it's definitely nothing you might have expected from the game maker.

Touch and go

Controls on mobile games are a rather contentious topic, with some bemoaning the concession to simply implement virtual d-pads and buttons everywhere. Others have taken a more "touch-friendly" approach, which usually means being limited to taps and swipes. Masters of the Masks is somewhat of the latter camp, but it adds a little twist, or in this case, a drag and drop. Like what you might normally do with when moving files or folders on touchscreens, the main action in this game, at least in the battle field, is tapping and holding on a character and dragging his or her attack to a target, represented by a directional arrow. It's that simple, though, at the same time, a bit more work than simply tapping here and tapping there. At the very least, it keeps the player aware of who to target.

The same drag and drop action applies to using "super" attacks, which are strangely represented by a meter at the bottom of the screen. You wait for it to fill up to a certain extent and then you drag from one of the Roman numerals and drop into a target, whether they be enemy or ally. This, however, is a little more complicated than a normal attack. Each character has a special ability. One might heal like a cleric, another might rain arrows on your foes. Which character's super attack (or buff) gets activated depends on whose turn it is.

motm-7 motm-8 motm-9

Waiting in line

Here is where Square Enix borrows a familiar trope from JRPGs. Battles are turn-based, but it's not a simple matter of one character following another. Each character has an action meter that gets filled up over time. Some get theirs filled faster than others and therefore get to attack or do a spell sooner. Same goes for enemies, and some units will be able to attack you even before one of your own units gets his or her chance to dish out some damage. After a character does something, the meter resets and needs to get filled up again. This is no different from the ATB or Active Time Battle system that the later Final Fantasy games popularized.

That said, the ATB wasn't always a welcome game mechanic, and some might cringe at seeing it here as well. At least the game pays homage to some of Square Enix's more mainstream titles.

Familiar faces

The Final Fantasy series haven't exactly been designed for modern mobile game conventions and some of Square Enix's mobile RPGs don't lend themselves easily to those either. Masters of the Masks is neither of those. In short, you also have the full gamut of mobile game features and misfeatures. Ladderized and fixed progression: check. Social connections and leaderboards: check. A "home screen" for setting up camp (quite literally here): check. In-app purchases: unfortunately, also check.

motm-10

Mobile gamers definitely won't feel like a stranger in this Square Enix title.

Wrap-up

Masters of the Masks is an unexpected game coming from a big name publisher and it could very well be a bit refreshing in that regard. But it probably won't be a hot item either. Square Enix played it safe and stuck to tried and tested and definitely overused mobile gaming tropes perhaps to try to appeal to the masses. And to their wallets. It does have a novelty factor to it that could make the game a bit more interesting. At least for some time.

motm-11

The game is free on Google Play Store, so it's safe to take it out for a spin. Do beware of those pesky in-app purchases though.

Snapdragon 810-powered Xiaomi Mi Note Pro ready for pre-order this May 6

No official launch or announcement from the PR guys of the company but the Snapdragon 810 variant of the Xiaomi Mi Note, aka Mi Note Pro, will soon be available. This is according to Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun himself who shared the good news on his Weibo account. The Chinese executive said that the top model version of the Xiaomi Mi Note will be ready for pre-order starting May 6 in China, all ready to compete in the high-end smartphone category.

It's nice to hear that Xiaomi was able to enter the mobile industry dominated by Samsung and Apple. The brand is even popular in the United States and some other parts of the world. The Mi Note is Xiaomi's bestseller and it can rival the many premium flagship phones in the market today like the Samsung Galaxy S6/S6 edge, iPhone 6, Huawei P8, or the yet-to-be-unveiled LG G4.

To review, the Xiaomi Mi Note Pro comes with an 8-core 64-bit Snapdragon 810 processor, 4GB LPDDR4 RAM, 64GB built-in storage, a 5.7-inch display, 2K 2560 x 1440 pixel resolution, ultrapixel front-facing camera, a 13 megapixel rear camera with OIS. There's also a Cat. 9 4G LTE support, a dual SIM slot, and some Hi-Fi audio chip for a better audio experience. At 3299 Yuan ($532), phone is really good. Pretty affordable for a high-end smartphone compared to other models from the other tech giants.

The Xiaomi Mi Note Pro also comes with a special Natural Bamboo edition. Phone was made available back in January but it's only now the Snapdragon Pro version is ready to rock gadget town. Check out the teardown treatment and see for yourself if Xiaomi Mi Note is for you.

WWE 2K now available on Android devices for wrestling fanatics

If it's always been your dream to become a professional wrestler, now is your chance to become one, although it will only be through virtual means. WWE 2K is now available for mobile devices and it is the first simulation-style WWE game that they've ever released on this platform. You can act as your favorite wrestling superstars and even play against them as well in the only authentic in-ring mobile game which can bring you all the WWE mobile action you'd want.

The game features an almost full roster of WWE superstars including Jon Cena, Triple H, Sting, Undertaker, Dean Ambrose, Seth Rollins, and many more. But if you've developed in your head your own wrestling persona, you can make him or her come alive in this game as you have the option to create your own wrestling superstar. You can choose from among different game modes to play either your own character or one of the "real" wrestlers. Career mode lets you go through a whole WWE journey, with the ultimate goal of reaching the Hall of Fame. You get to earn "respect", upgrade skills, earn titles, achieve goals, etc.

If you feel like you still have a lot to learn, you can play the Training mode. You'll be able to learn the "nuances of the deep gameplay" as you maneuver your way through the game and the organization, with a little help. If you feel like going against real, virtual people, you can use the Real-Time Multiplayer mode and go against friends or other players in the WWE Universe.

Downloading this game will cost you a bit, $7.99 to be exact, but if you're a huge fan of the WWE and wrestling in general, that should be worth it. You can download it from the Google Play Store.

7th Guest: 20th Anniversary Edition lands exclusively for Android

A new video game has landed exclusively for Android gamers and it is a remake of an old classic game. The game is called the 7th Guest: 20th Anniversary Edition. This game was incredibly popular when it first launched back in 1994. Obviously, it wasn’t originally aimed at mobile platforms since there really wasn’t any mobile gaming back then.

The game will have players exploring Henry Stauf's mansion. The premise is that you are the first person in the house since six guests went in long ago and never came out. As the player, you move from room to room trying to figure out who the unknown 7th guest was.

7guest-1 7guest-2 7guest-3 7guest-4 7guest-5 7guest-6 7guest-7

Continue your historical mission with Frontline Commando: WW2

There are two kinds of history buffs: those that like reading about it, and those that like being in it, or at least imagining themselves in it. Now if you're interested in the war parts of world history, then this game might be up your alley. Frontline Commando: WW2 is the sequel to Frontline Commando: D-Day and it picks up where it left off, this time dealing with the Occupation during that period of history.

"History depends on you" is not something you would normally want to see, but with games like this, you get to be the hero (or failed hero; good thing there are no real-world consequences). Your mission is to lead the Allied Forces to victory against the tri-axis of power, specifically to reach the heart of Berlin and defeat the Nazis. You get to test your battlefield skills in Belgium, Italy, Germany and other European countries that were touched by the war. Your guns are your only weapons against the enemy as you take out snipers, destroy convoys that are out to destroy you, and rally the troops on to save the continent and eventually, the world.

Each level has a challenge objective that you need to master. There are Assault, Sniper, and Rocket Launcher missions. You can also become a special operations soldier where you will be tasked to take down high-profile Axis officers or destroy crucial military targets. The game has "cutting edge graphics and precise controls" that will make you feel like you're actually in the battlefields fighting for the survival of your life and the Allied nations.

You can download Frontline Commando: WW2 from the Google Play Store for free. There are in-app purchases available if you want extra items. But you can also disable the feature as you adjust your Google Play settings.

Android-based Recon Jet ready for cyclists and runners

Recon Jet is nothing new. We've seen several pairs already. There's the Recon Jet Pilot Edition which began shipment December 2013. Recon Instruments is still in the business trying to fill up that void left by Google Glass. We've had our last chance to buy a Google Glass last January and until now, we have no idea if there will still be another one from the tech giant.

We still have other choices although features are limited. For sports enthusiasts, specifically the runners and cyclists, the Recon Jet features an open platform and SDK and Android can adapt to almost anything. The wearable platform has made the Recon Jet more attractive to cyclists and runners who need to track their physical activities.

The Recon Jet isn't available not just for the runners and cyclists. Other apps are being developed for sailing, yacht racing, aviation, and shooting as well. There are just too many things you could possibly do with Recon Jet. A pair may look bulky compared to the Google Glass but looks like the gadget is here to stay (hopefully). Recon Instruments have already been working on this for seven years so this and future versions could probably be more advanced.

Recon Jet is mainly used to display distance, speed/pace, duration, and ascent/descent while running or cycling. These performance metrics are measured by the glasses which then send data like cadence, power, or heart rate to your other Bluetooth device. Recon Jet can also receive notifications from your cellphone to show social media notifications, incoming calls, or SMS alerts.

The Recon Jet boasts of GPS and WiFi connectivity, allowing you to upload stats, images, and videos to Recon Engage or other data tracking services like MapMyFitness, Training Peaks, and Strava. Specs of the Recon Jet include a 16:9 WQVGA high-contrast display which appears at a distance of seven feet like a 30-inch HD display, IR receiver, 1GHz dual-core CPU, 1GB RAM, and 8GB built-in storage. There's an optical touchpad on the side which you can use to control the device.

Other specs include a 4-hour Li-Ion battery, micro-USB port, multiple sensors, dual microphones, speakers, and a 2.1-megapixel 720p camera. Compared to the 2013 Recon Jet, this one is heavier by 25 grams (from 60g to 85g). There's no IP rating provided but t the pair is dust- and water-resistant. Price tag reads $699.

Dormi Baby Monitor now brings video support

Being a geek doesn't stop when you become a parent. In fact, your geekiness will become even worse once you have a baby because you'd want to be always connected to your child. Of course, you can't hand your kid the latest smartphone, tablet, or computer but you may use the most hi-tech toys, accessories, and anything digital or electronic in the baby gadget industry. Parents nowadays have no reason not to be in the know or connected from their children because of the gadgets available.

For the parents always on-the-go, a baby monitor app can be very useful. Dormi is one of the best baby monitors in the market today. This doesn't need any separate hardware because you only need an Android device to work as an audio hardware baby monitor compatible with the Dormi app on your smartphone.

App has been around for some time already but it just received video streaming support. Parents outside the home can monitor their child over the Internet whether WiFi, Hotspot, 3G, 4G, LTE, HSPA+, or Edge--using two paired mobile devices.

What's good about the app is you can connect different devices at once in parent mode to a single child unit. It's a baby monitor so it's sensitive to noise level. It can detect cries and can amplify sound for parents to hear better. Parents are also allowed to talk to the baby by simply pressing the Talk button.

Ikea releases wireless charging furniture and accessories

Last month we told you about a wireless charging furniture line that Ikea was going to introduce to the market. They have now officially announced what kind of products will be available this spring, and it's even better than what we expected (well, if you're a fan of wireless charging, convenience, and nice looking furniture in your house). Even if you don't buy new furniture, they're also offering charging pads and other accessories that you can DIY and add to your existing stuff at home.

The inductive charging device, which uses the Qi wireless standard, can be easily added to your Ikea furniture (if you have any). The Jyssen wireless charger ($30) will fit into the cord management hole of desks like the Micke and Stuva. Just add $5 more and you will get a drill so that you can put it however you want in your furniture. You can also just get a portable wireless charging pad (which actually looks nicer if you think about it) which you can leave in various parts of your house and office. There is a single pad ($28) and a triple pad ($65) which you can charge as many as three smartphones or tablets at the same time.

zteld4mjhntx0q9g1unb

pg8th5uhea8gv1r05inn

But if you're in the market for actual furniture that have a wireless charging capability, you can choose from their whole line which includes a nightstand (Selje), a nightstand which also includes USB charging (Nordli), a floor lamp (Varv), a table lamp (also Varv), and a work lamp (Riggad). They are also selling a cord management box, a 3 port USB charger, and a 5 outlet power strip with a 2 port USB charger.

Just in case your smartphone doesn't actually support Qi wireless charging, they also have Samsung Galaxy cases (and for iPhones too) that can add that functionality. All these items for this tech line will go on sale by late spring. Check out their catalog to find out more details for each of these furniture and wireless charging pads.
