Workaround allows DRM functions on unlocked Sony Xperia devices

There are a lot of good reasons for you to unlock the bootloader of your Sony Xperia device, as there are a lot of cool aftermarket software and stuff out there that will make your cool Xperia dievice even cooler. But the downside to an unlocked bootloader is when you lose the imaging features that require DRM authentication – including the X-Reality image enhancement engine, the audio noise cancelling feature, and the BIONZ image enhancement engine among others.

Well, XDA member “jimRnor” and his team have something to say about that. They have successfully brought back these DRM features to the Sony Xperia smartphone series via a flashable mod. Take note that this is only for Xperia devices which have unlocked bootloaders.

Another caveat is that the developers have made it clear that this mod does not return the DRM keys that were wiped during the unlocking of the bootloader. This mod just reactivates the functions that are inherent in stock Xperia devices.

If you’re curious about this mod, check out the official XDA thread at the source link. We would still warn you that since this involves flashing modified content into your devices, it would be very wise to have a working backup of your phone data and system handy.

NovaKey wants to change the way you type

The premise of NovaKey – a new keyboard app – is that normal touchscreen keyboards still require you to look at the screen to make accurate taps on specific letters. By radically changing the orientation of the keyboard, NovaKey creates specific and unique “gestures” for each character – allowing for what they say is a more natural and fluid touchscreen typing process.

The keyboard map is now made up of circles of characters that you can swipe to from the central area of the keyboard so that each character is a unique swipe motion. The same is true with punctuation marks and special characters.

NovaKeyscreenshot

Being that you don’t know where the characters are the first time you use it, you will always have a hard time with NovaKey when you start to use it. But people who have started to regularly use it attest to the uniqueness and fluidity of their new typing process, giving it a more enjoyable feel. Watch the tutorial vid below.

What we want to know is if it is more efficient than the regular keyboard orientation. You can download this new app at the Google Play Store (check the source link), it’s a free download as of now. Then you can tell us about your experiences with it.

Samsung beats Apple in smartphone consumer satisfaction survey

Samsung just went past Apple when it comes to customer satisfaction at least by two points. This is according to the recent American Consumer Satisfaction Index which surveyed 70,000 consumers before 2014 ends. The results are in and show that Samsung beat Apple with a score of 81. That's also a huge increase from the South Korean giant's score of 76 last year. Meanwhile, Apple's score went down more than two points from last year.

Beating Apple in the customer satisfaction area is always a good thing for Samsung. We can expect it'd make a big deal out of this and perhaps even use the information on future promos. Two points may not exactly be a big lead but it says a lot. Why did Apple's score fall down and Samsung's score went up? Is it because of the bigger iPhone 6 and 6 Plus? Which of Samsung's mobile devices greatly satisfied the consumers?

The ACSI survey is usually a good indicator of what's happening in the mobile industry. Apple seems to be in a lull while Samsung is very busy innovating devices left and right. We may note that Apple lead J.D. Power's satisfaction survey as the leading smartphone brand this year for all major carriers but Samsung was closely trailing behind.

We don't care much about Apple but Samsung seems to be doing really good when it comes to product innovations. For one, the Galaxy S5's water-resistant case was a good feature. Of course, its cameras are still impressive. Let's see if Samsung will still continue to satisfy customers in the coming year.

Snail Games to release Obox gaming console at CES 2015

You’ve seen it before, and you’re likely to see it again – whatever the big manufacturers can do, China can do as well. Snail Games, an online gaming outfit based in China is planning to take on Sony and Microsoft by putting out an Android gaming console called Obox Online, scheduled to be launched at CES 2015 in Las Vegas just a few weeks from now.

If you’re thinking “Chinese manufacturing = weak specs”, you might be surprised at this gaming box. The console will be sporting a top of the line SoC in the NVIDIA Tegra K1 – an ARM Cortex A15 quadcore proc capable of turning at 2.2Ghz partnered with a Kepler GPU. This system-on-chip has proved its game-worthiness with the NVIDIA SHIELD Tablet, and has done that with flying colors.

obox1

The proc is backstopped by 4GB of RAM – where we hope it will be usable by a 64-bit capable system. Options for storage will reach 4TB, via 3.5-inch HDD. And connectivity options will include LAN, WiFi, and Bluetooth 4.0. Display options will include three HDMI outputs (wow!), plus a bunch of USB 2.0 and 3.0 ports.

obox2

The wireless controller will feature a 9-axis sensor with gyro and magnetometer, with the controller itself can be used as an air mouse. The system will be running on Android 4.4 Kitkat, which is more than capable of running high performance games.

obox3

For all intents and purposes, this will not be a cheap device, looking at the specs. No official pricing has been announced, but look for this in the USD$400 to 500 range.

SteelConnect M adapter works for the Moto 360

The Moto 360 is one of the very few goodlooking smartwatches in the market today. It's my choice of smartwatch when it comes to the looks department but I hope it allows more customization. Good thing there's the SteelConnect M adapter that brings a different twist to the smartwatch. With the adapter, you can now change the strap to give it a new look.

The SteelConnect M adapter for Moto 360 makes the Motorola smartwatch a fashion accessory now more than as a useful gadget. The smartwatch industry may still be in its early stage but it certainly has potential to be bigger. A lot of companies are revealing their smartwatches left and right so it's up to them how to make theirs stand out among the competition.

Goal of the developer was to raise £10,000 before it brings the SteelConnect M to production but he was able to raise more at £14,633. The project was funded completely last November 27 with about 583 backers giving in their pledges. EXpected delivery of the SteelConnect M is February 2015.

The Moto 360 already looks sophisticated but the SteelConnect M adapter will make it more stylish. This isn't an official Motorola product but I think the company will agree with the customization thing having started the Moto Maker. Because you see, there is beauty in using your own creative style.

Manage Partitions with UAPM

Screenshot_6

To flash an image like a kernel or recovery, you usually need to have access to your PC and properly configured fastboot drivers. This isn’t too convenient, especially when you’re traveling and there is a new version of your kernel to try out. Advanced actions on partitions can now be performed directly from your device with a tool written by XDA Forum Member ferreirawax. This tool lets you backup your current partitions without going into recovery. The application can also flash images directly from your device. To use the application, you need to find a correct number of your partition block. There are a few commands that can be executed to get the correct block number. For some devices it’s: adb shell ls -al /dev/block/platform/msm_sdcc.1/by-name This really depends of your device, and you can learn more about these commands by reading these short guides. You can also look for device trees of your current phones to check the correct Fstab. Be warned that wrong flash can hard brick your device . It’s a wise choice to backup your partition first and compare it with a backup made by ClockworkMod or TWRP. If sizes match, there is a fair chance that everything is in order. This application requires root access to work properly. You can learn more about this project by visiting the Universal Android Partition Manager application thread.

Install Google Play on your Amazon Fire Phone

The Amazon Fire Phone is a neat little device, with its robust specs and proprietary but efficient Fire OS. The “proprietary” part – which means the device is locked to Amazon’s App ecosystem – also means that the phone does not have full access to the Google Play Store, until now, that is.

Our friends from the XDA forums have given Fire Phone users another boon, which is the capability to install the Google Play Store without rooting your Amazon Fire Phone. The method is unofficial, of course, so be ready to own up to responsibility if with this process you break something.

amazon-fire-phone-header

A caveat – there always is one – is that this way seems to work most with devices running Fire OS version 3.6.8. The method is explained in the video below.

New Moto G coming to Brazil with LTE, bigger battery

No official announcement has been made yet but a new Moto G could be available in Brazil. Some information was spotted on the Brazilian website of Motorola bearing an LTE connectivity. But that's not the only feature that will impress the people because the LTE G is said to be getting a 2390mAh battery. That's larger than the 2070mAh battery of the standard Moto G smartphone which recently received an Android 5.0 Lollipop update earlier this month.

Looking at the specs, nothing much have changed on the 2nd-gen Moto G with LTE. Also called as LTE G, the phone boasts of the same Gorilla Glass 3 screen with 720p IPS panel. The LTE Moto G is somehow expected in the region because Brazil usually usual gets special Motorola models. Just a few tweaks from the US version and those available in other regions like Europe and Southeast Asia. However, there's information that the new Brazilian version will have the 16GB model as the standard instead of 8GB.

Out of the box, the Moto G will still have Android 4.4.4 KitKat, 1GB RAM, 8MP main camera, 2MP front-facing camera, 1.2 GHz quad-core CPU Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 Processor, WIFI, Bluetooth 4.0, and micro USB connectivity.

BRAZIL Moto G LTE

There's no information on pricing yet and there's no way you can order one in Brazil yet but at least the Brazilians now know what to expect.

Android 5.0 build leaked for the Samsung Galaxy Note 3

More and more people are getting themselves excited for their smartphones and tablets to be upgraded to Android 5.0 by their manufacturers, and Samsung users are not exempt from the hype. The Samsung Galaxy Note 3 – last year’s flagship phablet – is scheduled to get a bump to Lollipop, but lo and behold, here we have a Lollipop build leaked for the device.

The build leaked at XDA developers forum is for the Galaxy Note 3 SM-9005 model and weighs in at a hefty 1.1GB. The build is taken from the “N9505XXUGBNL8” software bundle. The build hasn’t gone live yet, and is probably not official, but most of the features work – all the Android 5.0 experience and a re-built Touchwiz – this late into Samsung’s software development process.

Android-5.0-Lollipop-Bugdroid

The update should be pretty straightforward for those who know how to flash with Odin software, a common tool for those who like tweaking their devices. We will again remind you that flashing your device with the new software build will delete the data partitions of your device – so it is important for you to make a backup of your device and data before you go through with it.

The update will cause your to start up longer during the first boot process, so do not panic if starting up after the flash process will take longer. If you are interested in this build, check out the official forum thread here via XDA.

Code Black mini Drone sneaks into pre-order [DEALS]

Ever fancied yourself to be a drone guy or gal but never really had the stomach for a more complex, not to mention more expensive, professional drone? If so, then Android Community Deals may very well make your dreams come true. The Code Black Drone, which comes with an HD camera of its own, is small enough to fit on the palm of your hand. And it has a price tag to match as well, making it a perfect starting kit for those planning to break into the drone scene.

How small is small? This drone only reaches a dimension of 3.25 in x 3.25 in. If that's a bit hard to picture, imagine that the drone is just as big, or rather small, as the dedicated controller that comes with it. Given that size, charging up the drone's 380 mAh battery is no big deal, though it can take up to 30 to 40 minutes at most. You can even charge it via your computer's USB port. The controller, on the other hand, runs on four AAA batteries.

That said, the Code Black drone does fly only for around 10 minutes non-stop, which isn't exactly hardcore by drone standards. But for beginners, that may just be enough to have some fun and mayhem. Plus, it comes with its own 2.0 megapixel camera that can record 720p HD videos onto a microSD card. It's one complete set in a tiny package.

The Code Black Drone normally costs $199, but here at Android Community Deals, it's going for a pre-order offer of $89. That's 55% off the normal price. However, that's only for US buyers. International buyers will have to fork over $99 instead, which still isn't that much compared to the regular price.

Humble Bundle adds 4 more games from Noodlecake Studios

Just before Christmas, Humble Bundle presented nine more games from Noodlecake Studios. And before 2014 ends, four new games have been added to the same bundle. This means the good deal we previously described is now a better deal but others may think of it as the best deal yet until the offer ends on January 5. To date, 16,863 bundles have been sold exclusively to Android gamers.

What's so good about the Humble Bundle is that you can pay for whatever you want. You can even choose to support a charity or the developers who have painstakingly yet lovingly made those games. The Humble Bundle is available for $6.50 but if you want to get more games, you need to pay $8. So what are the four new games added? Flappy Golf (Premium), Boxcat, Mage Gauntlet, and The Blocks Cometh.

With the addition of new games from Noodlecake Studios, the Humble Bundle is more attractive than ever we're not doubting the almost 17k downloads will increase overnight. Feel free to get the following games as part of the bundle as well: Polymer, Glorkian Warrior: The Trials of Glork, Super Stickman Golf 2 Premium, Pumped BMX 2, Devious Dungeon Premium, Tower Dwellers, and Mikey Boots.

Island Castaway: Lost World arrives on Android

After being very popular with iOS tablet users the free-to-play strategy game Island Castaway: Lost World now arrives at the Google Play Store to work its charms on Android users as well. With the multitude of choices for F2P games out there, this app better bring it’s a game to make it big over Android.

The Castaway series of games have been mildly popular for iPad users in a sort of “fun-but-expensive” way. The arrival of a free-to-play version seems a very wise move as they move towards the Android market. The Island Castaway: Lost World is a game that is a fine example of what the developers have to offer.

castawaylostworld5-600x450

The game is made up essentially of a series of “fetch” or “go get it” quests. Users will control leader of a bunch of castaways, and they will attempt to gather food sources to be the foundation of their humble community. Fortunately for you, the island is well stocked with those, but it requires gameplay and work to build up a supply of different farms.

The game is as casual as they come, and it is a good relaxing way to pass the time. If you are interested in the game, go and grab it at the download link below the video.

Vaio working on Android handsets, to compete with former parent Sony

Sony's very own Vaio laptop unit will soon be a rival of the mother company as the latter will join the mobile industry and introduce smartphones. This means Sony and Vaio will be competing in the same arena. The former laptop brand of the Japanese manufacturer is currently working with mobile carrier Japan Communications to offer its first smartphone in the country early in 2015. As the two brands go head to head, we'll see who is the best in making Android phones.

Sony still has a 5 percent stake in Vaio. The parent company sold majority of the Vaio shares back in July to an investment fund. This is part of Sony's efforts to restructure and rebuild its electronics business. But in a weird twist of fate, it's being challenged as Vaio recently designed a 5-inch Android phone.

The Vaio Android phone will run an app that can manage emails, and phone and video calls. No mention on who will be manufacturing the phone but it will be outsourced to several electronic manufacturing companies according to Vaio. Vaio and Japan Communications hope this will be a success especially that its pricing will be lower than Sony and other major brands. Vaio's phone won't be in the low-priced category though but it will be affordable.

The yet-to-be-named and yet-to-be-priced handset will be sold through e-commerce sites, information system developers, electronics retailers, and other sales channels of Japan Communications. Vaio may be late to join the smartphone bandwagon but the company believes it will be able to capture a percentage of the market with handsets that are affordable yet boast of superior design and impressive specs. We'll see how Vaio will fare in the mobile industry. Will it ever beat Sony? What do you think?

Samsung Galaxy Grand Max to be launched in Korea

Courtesy of the Samsung-specific Sam Mobile website, we are getting our first look at a very new Samsung Galaxy Grand Max – a phablet that will be launched in Korea, with no news yet if the gadget maker is bringing the said device to the international market.

The Galaxy Grand Max – code numbered the SM-G720N0 – will have a 5.2-inch HD display (720p), powered by a 1.2GHz quad-core processor, 1.5GB RAM, 16GB internal storage. The device will be thin for a phablet, that is, 7.9mm thin and will have a 13MP/ 5MP camera combo. Even with Android Lollipop out, this device will unfortunately come with Android 4.4 KitKat pre-installed, with no information if a Lollipop update is forthcoming, but it should be.

Samsung-Galaxy-Grand-Max-SM-G720N0

The Galaxy Grand Max will have 2,500mAh battery, and this particular model will have LTE connectivity. We see this device in the pics together with the Samsung Galaxy A5 and Galaxy A7, both heavily covered by our reports before.

Samsung-Galaxy-A7-SM-A700SKL

Is this something that would help the Samsung cause, re-building what was once a dominant lead in the smartphone industry? The device is obviously not a flagship level device, but is firmly targeted at the mid-tier market. Time will tell.

Rumored HTC Hima reportedly appears on AnTuTu

Our source for last week’s rumored spec list for the upcoming HTC “Hima” phone has come up with seemingly stronger evidence for the rumors regarding the specs of said phone – now the rumored HTC flagship device has apparently made an appearance at the databases of AnTuTu, the benchmarking outfit. Now let us see what we can learn from the specs shown here.

The AnTuTu appearance somewhat confirms that the new device – named in the picture as “HTC6535LVW (hima)” – sports a Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 processor, and also confirms the 3GB RAM from the earlier spec list. The Snapdragon 810 SoC isn’t really ready for primetime yet, but it’s good to see that HTC is taking that leap to move forward to the next generation 64-bit processor.

htc_hima_an_leak

The display is also marked at 5 inches in 1920x1080 resolution (full HD), same as in the rumored spec list. Lastly, the device in the AnTuTu data is running Android 5.0.1 Lollipop – though it obviously is not able to confirm if the device will actually be running the rumored Sense 7.0 interface on top of Android 5.0.

So there you have it – it is not solid information as of yet, but things are going in the right direction for this new HTC device. We hope to see more of it as 2015 approaches.

Samsung Announces Galaxy Note 4 Refresh with Super Fast LTE

nf-specs

Samsung is preparing its hardware to get some real LTE speeds. The Korean OEM has announced an improved version of the popular flagship Samsung Galaxy Note 4, which will be shipped with powerful hardware and shouldn’t be afraid of an extremely fast LTE connection.

The new Note 4 has been armed with LTE Advanced Tri-Band with Carrier Aggregation. This fancy technology allows the phone to download files at speeds upwards of 300 Mb/s. Needless to say, such speed is but a dream for most people in the world who can’t even achieve such speeds on wired connections. According to Anandtech, the new Note 4 will have a Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 SoC. This newest beast by Qualcomm is the only currently available SoC capable of running this latest LTE technology. This also mean that Samsung begins its 64-bit era and we should see more handsets with 64-bit CPUs.

The standard Samsung Galaxy Note 4, which was released in October of this year, features a Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 805 APQ8084 clocked at 2.7GHz. In certain markets, the existing Note 4 ships with Samsung’s Exynos 5433 which has four Cortex-A53 cores and four Cortex-A57 cores in a big.LITTLE configuration. Samsung has switched to a 20 nm manufacturing process for the refresh, however, and despite the increase in speed, we should see a reduction of upwards of 25% battery consumption in light tasks when compared with previous models.

It remains to be seen whether the revamped Note 4 will be available outside Korea, but such lovely specs will lovely cause some to import the new device.

Samsung Galaxy S3 Neo Receives Functional Lollipop Port

Screenshot_2014-12-24-20-34-01

The Samsung Galaxy S3 Neo is without a doubt a pretty nice device. Released in April 2014, this phone is essentially a re-designed version of the Samsung Galaxy S III with 1.5 GB of RAM and KitKat right out of the box. It’s not that popular as its older brother, but this phone is still a nice option if you are looking for wallet friendly handset.

Samsung isn’t planning to officially update the Galaxy S3 Neo to Lollipop. This isn’t a big surprise, but fear not because XDA Senior Member Rox released a highly functional unofficial port of CyanogenMod 12 for the device. This ROM can be considered as a daily driver, as only minor defects remain. NFC isn’t working properly due to lack of driver sources and audio in calls on the second SIM of the dual-SIM version doesn’t work. These flaws aren’t deal breakers, and you can kiss the KitKat goodbye and flash some Lollipop goodness.

To flash the ROM you must follow the standard procedure, which is entering the recovery mode and applying the update. ClockworkMod is the preferred recovery for the GT-I9300I users. If you are coming from Jelly Bean or KitKat, the factory reset is required.

Do you have a Samsung Galaxy S3 Neo in your pocket? Visit the development thread to give your device some Lollipop sweetness.

Shift app lets you create your own photo filters combo

There are hundreds perhaps thousands of photo and camera apps out there but most of the filters are already prepared for you. You just need to choose one to make a photo look as if it was taken by a professional photographer. That's the wonder of mobile photography. Point, shoot, and choose a filter for a pro-looking image you could probably submit to NatGeo. Up until today, there's not one app that allows you to make your own photo filter. But here comes the Shift, a new app that lets you create your own set of filters you can save for future use.

With a single tap of a button, you can make your own stylish effects: light leaks, vintage, gritty textures, and high contrast black and white. Use the slider controls to adjust the color and intensity. With the three touch points placed on the screen, you can position effect before saving your custom filter.

You can also build a filter library by storing all your custom photo filters there. Don't forget to use the Favorite button to save the filters.

Developed by Pixite LLC, the Shift app is a first of its own but I don't doubt other similar apps will follow. It's only a matter of time before other developers work on their versions or at least update their current photo filter apps and add customization features.

This flashlight app uses your phone’s power button as trigger

Carrying your phone is a part of you and it feels awkward when you don’t have it. Your phone also becomes a tool when you need to improvise. Using it as a flashlight is probably the most common thing when you need light. Whether it’s just turning on your screen from sleep or actually tapping into the camera flash, we all use some sort of light source from our phones. The Power Button Flashlight/Torch app on Google’s Play Store can help you out when you’re in a dark situation.

Shining a light couldn’t come up any quicker now with the Flashlight/Torch app. Starting your phone’s flash is quick. Your phone obviously needs to be powered on, but the display screen can be locked or off - No need to unlock your phone to get into the app. Simply press your power button 3 times within 3 seconds and voila – “Let there be light”. If you’re phone is on then press the power button 4 times to enable the flash.

The app is free to use but there is a full version available. The difference is the Turn Off feature. With free version, you’d have to turn off the flash within the app itself. In the full version, you can turn off the flash using the power button and also eliminate ads. Settings in the app let you control auto shutdown town after a certain amount of time, notification features when flash is on, and other settings.

I’m always using my phone’s flash when I’m working on my car. At times I hesitate to use it because I have dirty or wet hands that could compromise the phone. With the Flashlight/Torch app, you get to access the flashlight with just using the physical power button. So there’s really no risk in reaching for the light in that situation.

You've got to download the game and see for yourself the awesome graphics.

Playing this game, you'll get to experience how it is to take off and land on carriers and landing strips. Experience realistic weather and ride highly detailed planes with interactive cockpits--giving you an almost real pilot experience. If you're into history or aviation, you'd appreciate the WWII planes used. They are very detailed and well-designed you'd think they are real. Unfortunately, they could be shed into pieces in combat.

There are several game modes here: Survival, Last Man Standing, Free Flight, Free for All, Team Match, Capture the Flag, and the new Assault. You can play this with your family, friends, and even strangers online over WiFi or 3G/4G.

Samsung intros LTE Advanced Tri-Band Carrier Aggregation-enabled Galaxy Note 4

Just before 2014 ends, Samsung Electronics has announced its first ever LTE Advanced (LTE-A) Tri-Band Carrier Aggregation-enabled smartphone. It's not really a new model but the Galaxy Note 4 has been upgraded to run faster with a 300Mbps download speed. The number is too impressive because that is about four times faster than the current speed of 4G LTE network's today. This means super fast content streaming, downloads, and web browsing anytime, anywhere.

LTE Advanced Tri-Band Carrier Aggregation is a great advancement not only for Samsung but also for the rest of the mobile industry. This will set a new standard in LTE smartphones although other phone manufacturers might not catch up quickly.

Samsung Electronics' CEO and President of IT & Mobile Communications Division JK Shin said, “We continue to set new challenges for the industry and push boundaries to take mobile technology to the next level and deliver the best possible customer experience.”

What the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 LTE-A Tri-Band CA model will do is to search for and use the optimally available bandwidth. The phone receives three frequency bandwidths and aggregates them into one connection that can support Category 6 network service. With the 300 Mbps speed, you can download 40MB-worth of songs for a second or a 700MB video within 19 seconds. Later next year, it will be under LTE-A Category 9 service with up to 450 Mbps download speed.

This development from Samsung is not surprising because the South Korean giant has released the Galaxy S5 Broadband LTE-A and Galaxy S5 LTE+ earlier this year--smartphones with the fastest download speeds in the market to date.

Android Community Weekly Digest: Dec. 28, 2014

Just because it's holiday season doesn't mean that the mobile world is at a complete standstill. Though many indeed have set their eyes on CES 2015, which is just a few weeks away, some still managed to sneak in a few surprises before the year is over. And, of course, the rumor mill is starting to heat up with stuff to expect early next year. Welcome to the latest edition of Android Community's Weekly Digest, covering the period from December 22 to December 28, 2014, which also happens to be the last Weekly Digest for this year!

Now Showing

While major OEMs are saving their energy for CES next month, Chinese companies and smaller manufacturers aren't going to pass up the opportunity to take the stage for a while. This week has seen an assortment of smartphones launched across all price ranges, and some of them are quite interesting too.

Huawei's Ascend GX1 is an unexpected newcomer, boasting rather mid-range specs but with a 64-bit processor. It's defining factor, at least according to the company, is that its 6-inch smartphone 80.5% screen, one of the higher screen to body ratios in the market today. Sadly, it is also only 720p.

Meizu also makes a surprise reveal with the M1 Note, a colorful smartphone with somewhat decent specs and a tempting price. A 5.5-inch 1080p screen, a 64-bit octa-core MediaTek CPU, 2 GB of RAM, and Dual SIM Dual Stanby support makes for a very enticing offer. That it would remind people of the Apple 5c may or may not add to that attraction.

ASUS is seemingly taking a shot at Android One with the Pegasus X002, and like Google's new budget range line, the results are still inconclusive. That said, the 5-inch 720p smartphone with a 64-bit 1.5 GHz quad-core MediaTek chip, 2 GB of RAM, and a price tag of 799 RMB ($128) might just blow Android One out of the water. The only question now is availability.

On this side of the globe, ZTE USA is trying to appeal to LTE addicts with the new ZTE Speed. That said, that might be the only thing speedy about it, running on a 1.5 GHz quad-core chip with a 4.5-inch screen. That said, LTE connectivity at a low price is the main selling point of this smartphone, available from Boost Mobile with plans starting at $35 a month.

Speaking of LTE on a budget, BLU Products is finally paying more attention to the growing high-speed data network. It has launched not one, not two, but three 4G-enabled smartphones that span the range of prices and specs. From the Studio 6.0 LTE to the Studio 5.0 HD LTE to the Studio Mini LTE, BLU is trying to cross all it's T's and dot all it's I's with unlocked offerings that work on T-Mobile and AT&T's LTE networks.

Coming Soon

With CES 2015 coming, we expect to hear more and more about upcoming smartphone and tablet reveals. But while we might have already heard about Samsung's plans to out a more metallic Galaxy S6, new photos have surfaced that seemingly confirm that now. The HTC Hima, on the other, will, of course still be metal, but it seems that the Chinese OEM will be trying to splurge on a 64-bit Snapdragon 810 processor and an even higher 20.7 megapixel camera for next year's flagship. After going small with the Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact, Sony's next tablet is rumored to swing the other way, with a giant 12-inch or higher tablet coming our way early next year. ASUS launched a teaser that seemingly hinted at a dual camera setup ala HTC One, but a sighting at the Bluetooth SIG seems to hint at a different and disappointing ZenFone successor. The already crowded smartphone market might become even more crowded, with Kodak now trying to jump in with its own take on the mobile device as well.

This is just the tip of the iceberg and we expect more to come our way in the coming days. Which ones will be a hit and which ones will be a flop? Keep tabs on our CES 2015 coverage to find out!

Motorola lists Nexus 6 again, will start shipping on January 6

Google once warned us of possible problems with the Nexus update. The phone was launched last November but potential buyers are having a hard time getting one. That's despite the announcement before that it would expand to 12 more countries and that Google would be replenishing stocks every Wednesday. Even mobile carriers were not able to keep their promises. It was listed for pre-order but soon went out of stock.

T-Mobile's version was set to arrive in November but it was also delayed at least for a week. They say supplies are limited so maybe that's why you are having a hard time getting a Nexus 6. But don't you worry now, Motorola has finally brought back the Nexus 6 online and listed the smartphone on its website.

The Google Nexus 6 is currently listed will all colors and variants. No, it's nothing like the Moto X when it comes to customizations but at least we have two options: two colors and two memory options. Phone is still a bit pricey at $650 but Motorola will ship it to your doorstep for free.

Motorola will start shipping the Nexus 6 on January after the craziness of the holidays. You can place your order for one now and wait for the New Year to get your hands on the Nexus 6 finally (hopefully!).

Unofficial Android 4.4 Lands on Three Mediatek Devices

ZTE V970box

For the last few years, devices with MTK systems-on-chip haven’t received much in the way of official Android updates. Some OEMs were limited by MediaTek itself, which previously wasn’t the best at updating proprietary drivers, binaries, and kernels with every Android release. Custom ROM developers also had trouble with providing third party kernels due to lack of proper source code.

Recent actions taken by Mediatek have given hope that this SoC manufacturer has finally decided to take a different approach with respect to open-source licensing. Unfortunately, some users with older devices are still left behind. Development for devices with MTK SoCs still continues, however, and as a result we have KitKat ROMs available for three older devices: Newman N1, Micromax A110, and ZTE Grand V970. These builds come courtesy of XDA Recognized Contributor superdragonpt, who managed to create a custom kernel capable of running KitKat; and XDA Forum Members qus1 and lingfude, who created the builds for aforementioned devices.

These ROMs are considered stable, so you can use Android 4.4.2 KitKat as a perfect replacement for the stock firmware. It’s definitely nice to see custom ROMs and kernels for older devices, which were almost impossible to update due to software and hardware limitations.

MTK devices aren’t overly popular, but we truly believe that such achievement should be brought to your attention. The developers put a lot of efforts to support devices left behind both by their OEMs and SoC manufacturers. Please head over to the following threads if you are looking for KitKat ROMs for selected MTK devices:

Level Up! Baldur’s Gate II, Hearthstone, Borderlands, KOTOR

Half the holidays is almost done but the gaming season is definitely far from over. The past two weeks have seen the Android games roster increase a bit with new titles, even from very old games. Plus, 'tis the season to be increasing your own merry list, with countless deals and discounts. It's time to Level Up! with Android Community's last games roundup for the year 2014.

Baldur's Gate II: Enhanced Edition

Beamdog continues their painstaking work of bringing RPG classics of old to the modern times. This time it is BG2EE, as it is fondly called, that makes its way to Android, bearing adjusted resolution graphics and a few addons as well. BG2EE covers the main Shadows of Amn campaign plus the Throne of Bhaal and The Black Pits II. Those who wish to have a more engaging experience can opt to buy some optional expansions and content inside the game.

Blizzard's Hearthstone

Blizzard finally rolls out its much awaited mashup of card games and its Warcraft franchise with Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft. This much awaited game is sadly still available only on tablets, but Blizzard is confident it could pull out a smartphone edition from its magic hat really soon. Initially available only in Canada, Hearthstone quickly opened its doors to the US and international gamers as well.

Tales from the Borderlands

The hit Borderlands franchise has hit Android, but it isn't the high octane shooter you might be expecting. Handled by Telltale Games, the game takes on a more story-heavy spin that the game studio is known for. That's not to say, of course, that it's going to be a boring fight, and fans of the series should very well take this out for a spin. That is, if the $5.00 price tag for an episodic game doesn't turn you off.

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic

Quite late into the game, Knights of the Old Republic or KOTOR has finally arrived. One of the more popular Star Wars games, KOTOR puts the fate of the galaxy in your hands. Side with the light or go over to the dark side, the choice is yours to make. And of course, you'll get to play with cool Jedi (or Sith) powers and your very own lightsaber. The game's interface has been retrofitted for mobile devices but the content is just as huge as the original, so better reserve some storage space on your smartphone for this.

Honorable Mentions

Valve's hit Half-Life 2: Episode One also lands on Android, but you better have an NVIDIA SHIELD Tablet to be able to play this one. Rockstar is bringing GTA to the Android streets, but in a smaller scale and with a view from up above. If you love gaming and love chatting and want to have one place to do both, Viber has opened up its doors to games as well, though availability is currently very limited. Rovio has updated its first RPG, Angry Birds Epic, with the ability to dish it out with other players over the Internet. And for those lucky enough to own a Samsung Gear VR already, Temple Run VR is now yours to download and experience from an entirely new point of view.

It's not to late to stock your digital shelves with more games. While some discounts have already expired, some of the titles in our pre-holiday list, particularly those from Square Enix, keep their price cuts all the way into January. And if you want gaming for a cause, be sure to check out the latest Humble Noodlecake Bundle going on right now.
