Gesture Controller lets you open apps with, err, gestures

There are developers out there who are trying to send tactile and physical buttons out to oblivion, making everything contactless, and running everything via voice and gestures. This new app, unimaginatively called Gesture Controller, is one of the large number of apps in the Google Play Store that allow you to start apps with gestures.

Recent advancements in sensor technology have made it a lot easier for developing gesture-based apps – the accuracy that you get from the sensors is crazy. This works well for this new app, Gesture Controller, as it allows you to program and use any gesture to start any specific app – of course, without having to tap your screen.

Start your apps like some sort of jedi – two shakes to start the music app, one shake to start the camera… you get the idea, right? The great thing about the free version of this app is that it practically has no limitations – you can start any app installed on your phone with any gesture you so choose.

The paid version of the app will let you program more than one gesture to an app. Basically just a matter of convenience right there. The paid app will cost USD$1.79, while the free app is, err, free. Check out the source links below.

Marvel Mighty Heroes hands-on: a game with too many twists

Given the recent rash of popularity of Marvel's myriad franchises, you can't blame one of the biggest names in the comics industry from trying to squeeze every last dollar from those. We've already seen a lot of Marvel games on Google Play Store, some made by Marvel and some in partnership with game studios. For Mighty Heroes, Marvel decided to go with one of the biggest names in mobile gaming, DeNA. The result? A game that follows the tropes of conventional mobile games but with just enough twists to keep it interesting, at least for a while.

Obviously you get to choose from a roster of Marvel's do-gooders, though the exact extent of that list is still unkwnown. Of course, you have the now staples of the Marvel (Cinematic) Universe, like the Hulk, Nick Fury, and even Gamora. Cap and Spidey are also there, though you'll have to unlock them to get them. More heroes will surely be added later on. But don't go looking for fine looking heroes here. The first twist: all game characters come in "Bobblehead" form, almost cartoonish with their big heads. Except Hulk, because his body is always bigger than his head.

marvel-mighty-heroes-3

At its most basic, Marvel Mighty Heroes is basically a 4-player co-op skirmish kind of game. You play with or against three other players using their own heroes to meet the requirements of a certain level, usually a goal that has to be accomplished within a certain amount of time. It can be a tad confusing on the screen, especially when you see three Hulks smashing about. At the end of the time limit, the four players are ranked according to their performance. So here's the second twist: you both cooperate with each other but also battle for top marks. As for who makes up your 4-man, or woman, team, you can either recruit your friends or leave your fate in the hands of the game.

But here's another twist. You actually get to build up your own sort of sub-team, made of three characters that you level up and equip with skills as well as costume variants. Inside a mission, you can switch between these three as you wish, though there is a cooldown period where you're stuck with your decision for a while. While you might want to always use your favorite costumed hero for every mission, the game recommends you use a certain type, basically a class, of heroes. There are three that play out in a rock, paper, scissors kind of balance: Scrappers beat Blasters, Blasters beat Bruisers, Bruisers beat Scrappers. Each mission gives a class advantage. In practice, however, that may sometimes be moot. Since you're also competing with other players for scores, sometimes it might be more advantageous to use a ranged character to get to an enemy, for example. Or a hulking beast to hold down the fort.

On paper, Marvel Mighty Heroes might have been, at the very least, an interesting game, but it falls short on execution. The game's graphics are passable and we've seen better days. Identifying your players in a crowded arena isn't exactly easy, especially if you use a generic, system-generated name for your account. It helps if you put in a custom name like others, but those names are barely visible. Besides, in the short mission bursts, there's barely enough time to look around. You just go in there and smash enemies, no questions asked. It's a fine, hectic mess and the game's subtleties are easily missed or even forgotten.

And even in implementation, the game stumbles a few times. During the tutorial phase, where other games guide you in the essentials and wait for you to take action, the game just proceeds as if ignoring your very existence. In fact, there are several points in the game's UI where you are asked to make a decision but the game proceeds with the default anyway after a very short delay, as if your input was inconsequential. Since it's a co-op game, an Internet connection is required. Actually, a steady Internet connection is essential. The game does not degrade gracefully in case of a slow or broken connection, freezing the user interface at times making you presume that the game froze, when actually you were just getting an Internet hiccup.

Marvel Mighty Heroes has a lot going for it in theory: a strong Marvel fan base, DeNA's mobile gaming clout, interesting though not exactly novel game mechanics, and the lure of free. In practice, the game is probably too rough around the edges and definitely feels more like a money grab instead of a very serious game like, say, Marvel Contest of Champions. Still, the game is fresh and new and could probably be salvaged with a few fixes here and there.

Marvel Mighty Heroes is available for free on Google Play Store, with in-app purchases, of course.

Boulder Dash now has premium version of 30th Anniversary edition

For a game to have lasted 30 years and still be popular even in a new setting is an achievement indeed. Boulder Dash is one of the games that has stood the test of time (and competition!) and to celebrate the 30th Anniversary Edition late last year, they released a free game. But apparently, people are willing to shell out a little more in order to get more than what the free version can give you. So due to insistent public demand, they now have a premium edition for Boulder Dash.

If you're not familiar with what Boulder Dash is (or if you've been living under a, well, boulder), it's a long-running game franchise where the basic idea is you collect gems by digging around and avoiding dying from all these traps and obstacles. For the 30th anniversary edition, it got a rejuvenated 2.5D and 3D graphics look as well as brand new worlds to mine from and new monsters to escape from. It also has added several new elements like diagonal movement and using ramps to change the game a little.

For this premium edition, you'll be able to get more than 200 all-new levels, which will include never before seen worlds and even creatures. You also get even more multi-colored gem combos, treasure chests, more power-ups, all to help you rack up as many points as you can. There are 8 unlockable worlds, and then four more that will be available through an in-app purchase. You can choose to play as Rockford, the main protagonist, but if you want to choose other characters, you need to unlock these 8 male and female characters, which also includes another popular one, Crystal.

You can choose to still play the free version (but without the features we mentioned) of Boulder Dash 30th. Or you can shell out just $2.99 and buy the premium edition from the Google Play Store.

Create and control levels in Doodle Adventures

There are games that are meant to be played. And then there are those that are meant to be created. But if you're not an actual developer, chances are, you rarely get the chance to create your own games. Doodle Adventure is one of those games where you can create and control the levels that the character plays in, even if you don't have software skills. You may not be able to control the player, but at least you get to have a say in the environment.

The main character, Dudol, has a problem and that is his kingdom called DoodleLand is in ruins ever since things started to disappear. But of course that is only a convenient backstory in order for you to help him rebuild everything, even as you help him in his quest to save his land. Using the magic of your touch, drag and drop blocks, tools, and yes even enemies (because games are boring without enemies right?) in the path of Dudol. Once you're satisfied with the level, just click play and see him try to reach the finish.

The blocks themselves have several unique characteristics and they will help Dudol reach his goal and get Doodle Land back on its feet. The game has over 51 levels and a variety of gameplay mechanics. There are also different kind of levels like underwater, round, teleports, no-exit levels, etc. You can also share the levels you've created with your friends (in case they're too lazy to make their own) through a QR code which you can post on your social networks.

You can download Doodle Adventure from the Google Play Store for free. There are some in-app purchases available to enhance your level-creating probably.

Remote Play port to Android updated, Dualshock, NVIDIA SHIELD supported

We’ve written before about the Remote Play feature exclusive for Sony Xperia Z2 and Z3 devices being ported so that other Android devices can use it. That port, a boon for those with similarly powerful devices but unable to utilize Remote Play because it is a Sony Xperia Z3 exclusive, has now been updated with better features.

The port is able to activate Remote Play on any device that runs Android 4.0 and higher. Of course, the feature requires upper-mid to high end specs, including good video performance and LTE capability. The hack requires flashing a ZIP file via custom recovery and installing an APK of the official PlayStation app. With a few steps in the recovery – such as wiping the cache and doing a reboot – your phone should be good to go for Remote Play.

dualshock-4-controller-ps4

New features in the update now include Bluetooth support for Sony PlayStation’s wireless Dualshock controllers, which means being able to pair your Dualshock controller to your phone and use it for Remote Play. Another is compatibility with NVIDIA’s powerful Tegra K1-boosted SHIELD Tablet – some users have confirmed that they are able to use Remote Play on the tablet with controllers.

If you’re interested in this hack, allow us to warn you as always that something might still go wrong – especially with ports like these. It is always a good idea to have a good solid backup to return to. That said, please check out the official XDA forum thread (see source link below) for complete instructions. Then tell us about it in the comments section when you do.

We aren’t sure what sort of hardware the smartphone will have, but a few tidbits have been rumored. One of those rumors is a 20.7MP main camera, a 5.2-inch QHD screen, and a Snapdragon 810 chipset mated with 3GB of RAM.
