Pebble adds health and fitness apps, more retail stores

As Pebble celebrates 2 1/2 years of being in the wearable market, way before any of the other smartwatches were in existence, they've made a few announcements to celebrate. This includes a new update, adding several health and fitness apps, making the smartwatch available in more retail outlets and of course, new pricing.

The newest firmware update to Pebble now brings non-stop activity tracking and sleep monitoring working on the background even as you display your favorite watchface. This also lets several health and fitness apps work even beter with your smartwatch. The Misfit app has been updated so it will also do round-the-clock activity tracking while Jawbone will be launching an activity tracking watchface called UP, created specifically for Pebble and will soon be syncing with their UP app. Swim.com will let you measure your swimming activities with Pebble, since it has a 5 ATM water-resistance. So now you can track your distance, speed, pace, strokes and time for when you're exercising in the pool.

Pebble will also now be available in more retail outlets, like in the US, it will be at Sam's Club, Fry's Electronics and soon, also on Sprint stores. In the UK, Pebble will be available at Dixons Retail, O2 and Amazon.com.uk by October. In Benelux, they will be in MediaMarkt, Coolblue.nl, Wehkamp.nl, Bol.com), and in Scandinavia, among new stores are MediaMarkt, Teknikmagasinet, coolstuff.se/no/dk, Verkkokauppa.com, etc.

But probably the best news is that, in the spirit of their vision "to make technology more accessible," Pebble smartwatches will now be available at $99 and Pebble Steel will be at $199. You need to update your firmware in order to enjoy the new features of your wearable. Just open the Pebble smartphone app, go to the Support menu and choose Update Your Pebble if it doesn't automatically start.

Google Play Store now shows IAP price range, dev address

As hinted before, Google has finally pushed changes to Play Store, both on the web and on mobile, that try to assuage the concerns and complaints of consumer rights advocates and government bodies. These changes include a simple range of prices on in-app purchases and, perhaps a tad more worrying, physical addresses of the app's developers.

The new price range feature is a good first move but comes up slightly short of what users would perhaps want, especially considering a slightly better equivalent feature in iTunes App Store. At the moment, all that Google has done is to update the Details page of apps with IAP to show the minimum and maximum prices of items that can be purchased inside the app. In contrast, the App Store provides a more detailed listing of each item and the corresponding price, giving interested buyers a better idea of what they're getting into. Hopefully, Google will move towards something similar, if not better.

The second change is perhaps a bit more contentious. For the sake of better accountability and to comply with consumer protection laws, Google has not only started requiring developers of paid apps or apps with IAP to put in a real, physical address associated with the account but also displayed that address in the same details page for everyone to see. That piece of information is actually already included in Google Wallet receipts for every purchase made, but it's quite another thing to have it visible even for those not buying the app.

There are a few caveats to this change. First is that it only affects developers of paid apps or apps that offer in-app purchases, leaving free app developers to continue to revel in relative anonymity. The second is that Google only requires a real, physical address, not exactly a home address. This means those developers can most likely use a PO Box, although Google has not yet clarified this option. Nonetheless, it still becomes a worrisome issue especially for lone or indie developers. There are suggestions that there are ways for Google to comply with those said laws without divulging developers' addresses in such an easily accessible manner. Whichever way the issue goes, Google is giving affected developers up to the end of the month to comply or risk having their apps delisted from Google Play Store.

Google intros Drive for Education, free for educators and students

There’s no escaping Google. The search giant is giving both geeks and mere mortals more reasons to love the company by introducing Drive for Education. This is a follow up to the Drive for Work premium version introduced earlier this year.

Google Apps for Education is already widely being used in many homes, schools, and offices. About 30 million students and teachers are using the apps, the Drive included. Because of Google’s Drive convenience, it has replaced their physical bookbags. Why lug around heavy books, binders, and other documents when you can store all them on the Drive? Documents are then accessible from any tablet, browser, smartphone, or Chromebook.

The Drive for Education is larger in scope and is more secure. Unlike Drive for Work, this is free for all educators and students--and is ad-free (hooray!). Features include unlimited storage. You can actually save individuals files up to 5TB in size. There’s also the Google Apps Vault that will aid in search and discovery for compliance needs. To easily see a file’s activity, there’s enhance auditing that includes auditing and reporting tools and an Audit API.

Drive for Education is ultra-secure. Google won’t compromise your files security as each of them is encrypted on the Google Servers and while being transferred to data centers or from a device to the cloud.

Google also recently introduced the Classroom, a special app that automatically organizes all Classroom assignments into Drive folders for a more convenient access. With all these and more, Google is set to make a big change in education by providing a “safe, effective, and compliant learning environment” as promised by the company.

Samsung Galaxy Note 4 gap is a feature, not a defect

As software developers are wont to say, "it's a feature, not a bug". This might as well be Samsung's exact words in its response to worries about the gap that exists between the Galaxy Note 4's edge and its screen, assuring owners and would-be buyers that this "gapgate" is a non-issue.

This gap problem is both somewhat worrying by nature and yet, at the same time, amusing, or suspicious, in its timing. It started just days after Apple's iPhone 6 Plus was hit by an even more worrying "bendgate" problem, where several smartphones, including Samsung's larger Galaxy Note 3, were proven to be less yielding than Apple's first phablet. These events have caused users to scrutinize the build quality of several popular smartphones, which is always a good thing but can also sometimes lead to witch hunting and false positives.

That may just be the case here, if Samsung's response is to be believed. According to the manufacturer, there is nothing to worry about that gap, as it does not affect the functionality and quality of the Galaxy Note 4.

"The reported issue does not impact the functionality or quality of the Galaxy Note 4. We assure our customers that all Galaxy Note 4 units meet our strict manufacturing and quality control standards."

In fact, the user manual for the phablet goes even further, calling it a necessary manufacturing feature.

As to what that manufacturing feature is, Samsung does not say and users will most likely clamor for a better explanation. That said, even the manual admits that there will some vibration of parts and that the gap might expand slightly over time, not exactly the reassuring statements that users will want to hear. Unfortunately as far as Samsung is concerned, there is no problem at all. Unless, of course, they count this as a PR problem.
