Panasonic launches Toughpad rugged Android device at IFA

The IFA 2014 tradeshow in Berlin is not just for stylish devices like the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 or the new Sony Xperia Z3Panasonic tries to break the mold by announcing the Toughpad FZ-X1 rugged Android handset (FZ-E1 for the Windows 8.1 model). With a name that sounds more like an artisan tool than a phone, Panasonic seemingly went for all out rugged protection with this new industry-ready device.

The Toughpad FZ-X1 is a 5-inch device with tablet and voice call capabilities. Underneath all the armor is a Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 1.7GHz Quad-Core SoC and 2GB of RAM to power all of the processes. The screen is a distinct technology which is readable in sunlight (non-reflective), and has 1280x720 HD resolution, and – dig this – 10-point capacitive multi-touch input. The device runs on Android 4.2.2.

The device’s battle armor is just as impressive – the device is MIL-STD-810G certified, which means it is certified by the US Department of Defense for device physical integrity. The new device is also tested for 3m drops to concrete, which a majority of commercial devices would not be able to survive. The casing of the Toughpad is also IP68 certified, for sealing against dust and submersible in water.

Lastly, the Toughpad has battery life that is drool-worthy – its 6200mAh battery gives users standby time of up to 1,000 hours, talk time of up to 23 hours and up to 14 hours of continuous data access. Not only that, the battery is hot swappable, meaning that you can take the battery out and swap it with a spare one without powering the device down. How cool is that?

In real world terms though, rugged devices like the Toughpad FZ-X1 are designed for enterprise level, industry-related workplaces which will be dangerous for most consumer level devices. It’s not eye-candy, but it will survive a number of situations which a normal consumer phone would not. Lots of interesting stuff going on at the IFA 2014, keep tabs by clicking on our tag link.

Sony Xperia Z3 rumored to be coming to Verizon

When T-Mobile announced yesterday that they will be carrying Sony’s latest flagship the Xperia Z3 by the end of the year, there was one missing word in their press release: the word “exclusive”. PCMag has now said that they have it on good authority that the new smartphone will also be carried by another US carrier, Verizon, and that it will be rebranded as the Xperia Z3v.

According to documents sent to PCMag (but which they did not publish of course), pictures showed an Xperia Z3 with a Verizon logo at the back, which is how they usually “label” phones that they carry. It also showed a screenshot of the phone with preloaded apps like Amazon Kindle, Amazon Music, and the Amazon Appstore. The document also reportedly showed specs with the smartphone having 3GB of RAM, 32GB of internal storage and a microSD card slot for expansion.

Previously, Sony had a hard time penetrating the US market because local carriers rarely made their phones available and if they did, it would be a few months (sometimes years) after the official release in other regions. So when Sony said that the Xperia Z3 will be coming to T-Mobile by the end of the year, it came as a surprise for most people. If the Verizon rumours are true, it would be another surprise as they have not carried a Sony device since 2011 when they had the Xperia PLAY.

The official announcement of the Xperia Z3 a few days ago has created some excitement for mobile photography enthusiasts as it has the first 12800 ISO sensitivity among smartphones to accompany its 20.7MP main camera. Gamers are also looking forward to trying it out since it has a PS4 Remote Play feature which will let you control and play PS4 games on the Xperia Z3. Let’s wait and see if both T-Mobile and Verizon will be competing to bring the smartphone to their subscribers.

Alcatel’s OneTouch Hero 8 is a slim octa-core 8-inch tablet

You may have noticed it, but it just needs saying that going “octa-core” (8 processor cores, for the uninitiated) seems to be the trend at the ongoing IFA 2014 in Berlin. A lot of manufacturers are outing new devices with octa-core processors and Alcatel is one of those with the OneTouch Hero 8 – a stylish new tablet with power to spare.

The Hero 8 has first and foremost an 8-inch 1920x1200 full HD display, with Alcatel having those media and movie buffs in mind. The display is powered by a MediaTek SoC, an octa-core MTK 8392 that turns at 2.0Ghz per core coupled with the MT6290 LTE chipset. Yes, this means that you can actually carry this baby around because of LTE connectivity. But don't worry -- at 7.3mm thick, this is one of the slimmer tablets that you would find in the market today. The tablet is coming out with Android 4.4 KitKat out of the box.

The Hero 8 also has 2GB of RAM to manage all of the processes, and 16GB of internal storage. The tablet is also Miracast ready, should you want to cast the tablet’s media to a bigger screen. The tablet also has the “TV Mate” app installed so you can use the device as a universal remote control for your TV. Alcatel is hyping the connectivity features of the tablet – WiFI, Bluetooth, and 4G – as you can even use the tablet for voice calls via a wired headset or a Bluetooth one.

The device seems to be leaning more towards the higher end of the tech spectrum – this is why Alcatel has given it the “Hero” naming code. No information on the pricing as of yet, but the Hero 8 should be available by the end of September. Keep track of all the ongoing device madness with our IFA 2014 tag.

Alcatel OneTouch Hero 2 is a 6-inch phablet with high-end style

Alcatel’s premier phablet, the OneTouch Hero, is also getting an IFA 2014 refresh with the OneTouch Hero 2. Building on its predecessor’s stylish roots, the Hero 2 has a very stylish feel to it, especially with a high-end spec list to boot.

The Hero 2 has a 6-inch full HD IPS display at 1080x1920 resolution. The screen is covered by Dragontrail scratch-resistant glass with OGS lamination for further protection. Pushing pixels to this display is a MediaTek MT6592 “true octa-core” 2.0Ghz processor – 8 cores turning at the same speed, and differentiated by those big.LITTLE SoC’s – with a Mali GPU, all backstopped by 2GB of DDR3 RAM. This will all run on the Android 4.4 KitKat OS. As we can see, this not really flagship level specs, but it is there or thereabouts.

The 6-inch phablet has LTE connectivity, 13MP main camera paired with a 5MP front-facing selfie shooter, and 16GB of internal storage. Much like Samsung’s galaxy Note series, the Hero 2 also sports a stylus for the more creative side of you. And with a full resolution display like that, you need to have the battery power to make sure the device is useful. Fortunately, Alcatel did not skimp on this spec, giving the device a monster 3,100mAh battery.

The device sounds premium and it certainly looks premium – so we can expect a pretty premium price range for this as well. No information on that as of the moment, but Alcatel says that the product should be out to market by end of September. Keep track of all the IFA 2014 goings-on via our tag, linked here.

Alcatel gives affordable LTE connectivity with POP2 smartphones

Alcatel’s POP devices have been one the manufacturer’s most accessible products since its 2013 refresh – offering budget-friendly devices with respectable specs. At IFA 2014, it looks like we’re getting another refresh with Alcatel announcing the POP 2 series of phones – and from the looks of it, they’re going to be competitive with the other phones in their market.

The POP series of handsets have been one of Alcatel’s most popular devices, and that is set to continue with these brand spanking new POP 2 phones – all with LTE connectivity. These new phones – available in 4.5 or 5-inch displays – all sport Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon 410 quad-core processors (1.2Ghz), a chipset with LTE connectivity as well.

These phones will come in a bunch of bright pastel color schemes, depending on which saccharine feel you want for your phone. And it looks like Alcatel has been doing a lot to improve on its software side as well, with the phones boasting casting technology (that is, watching your device display on a TV screen), native QR code recognition, one finger zoom and other such features. All of these are coming out with Android 4.4 on them, presumably.

Included with the POP 2 series launch is a new upgrade to the Alcatel POP 8 tablet – the new POP 8S tablet also now sports LTE connectivity and quad-core performance. We’re just at the beginning of IFA 2014 and the gadget craziness level has been off the charts. Watch out for more announcements that will be sure to come in the next few days.

The new Moto X builds on an already successful device

Specs for the new Moto X, back then called X+1 or even X2, have already been leaked and some of them even came true. But it is only when you get the bigger picture that you are able to see how all of those fall into place. Now that we've got our eyes and hands on with the new flagship, we can safely say that Motorola has another winner in the making.

The new Moto X is an upgrade in every sense of the word, both in hardware and in software. While the Moto X's Snapdragon S4 Pro was one or two generations late when the smartphone launched, the latest model carries a 2.5 GHz quad-core Snapdragon 801, quite the latest considering the 805 is still trying to gain traction. The RAM though, remains the same at 2 GB. The screen might be a two-edged sword. At 5.2-inches, it is considerably larger than the first Moto X's 4.7-inches. But then it does also have a 1080p resolution. Motorola boasts that it spans edge to edge, giving it more display area than the Galaxy S5 which has the same width as the new Moto X. Though larger, Motorola claims it is just as easy to hold and use, thanks in no small part to the handset's design.

Motorola definitely went for premium here, which means metal all around. Well, except for the back cover, of course. An aluminum metal frame covers the edges of smartphone, and metal accents in the speaker grill and the large Motorola logo on the back emphasize the refined look of the device. The back is curved to make it easier to hold in one hand and the aluminum thins and widens along the contours of the phone to both match that curve and offer an even better grip. Needless to say, with matching customized and personalized Moto Maker covers, no one will mistake the new Moto X for a cheap, plastic toy.

Software is one area where the first Moto X stood out the most, not because of some custom skin but because it offered an almost pure Android experience. That gave it the ability to push out Android updates just days after release, instead of being bottlenecked by testing and integration. That said, the Moto X did offer a set of convenience software features that have now been renamed and substantially improved in the new Moto X. Moto Voice, formerly known as Touchless Control, has been given a few new talents, primary of which is the ability to set your own personalized voice prompt. It also lets you post status updates on Facebook or send messages via WhatsApp and even play videos on YouTube without you even having to touch your device. Moto Assist is Do Not Disturb/Blocking Mode on steroids. It mutes itself automatically when it sees that you are in a meeting, based on your Google Calendar. With "Talk to Me", it will read aloud messages and incoming callers' names when you're driving or optionally when you're at home. Quick Capture lets you launch the camera app with a quick twist of the wrist. It automatically takes multiple shots when it detects too much movement and suggests the best one. And speaking of gestures, there is a new Moto Actions feature that utilizes the smartphone's Infrared sensor to let you use gestures to command your phone, like waving your hand over the phone like a Jedi to silence that unwanted call.

Moto X Front Dynamic Navy Leather Cognac Leather Natural Leather

Motorola has also upgraded its personalization scheme with a new Moto Maker. While you still get to choose your usual customization picks, Motorola has added a few new choices for back covers as well. In particular, you can now choose genuine leathers, in Natural, Cognac, Navy, and Black, while the wood options remain as Bamboo, Teak, Walnut, and Ebony. Motorola notes that Black Leather and Bamboo will only be available with select carriers. The woods are also Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified, so more environmentally conscious buyers won't have anything to worry about.

Excited for the new Moto X? The smartphone will be coming to North America, Latin America, Europe, and Asia later this month. On select US carriers it will cost $99.99 with a two-year contract. Unlocked, it will carry a $499.99 price tag. There will, of course, be price differences when you buy it through Moto Maker, which will let you choose not only your own style or back cover material but also a choice of 16 GB or 32 GB of storage.
