T-Mobile says its Moto X variant will only sell through Motorola at first

TMobile says its Moto X variant will only sell through Motorola at first

While it's well-known that the Moto X will launch on multiple US carriers, it turns out that T-Mobile customers won't have the easiest time buying one -- at least, not at first. The provider's Mike Sievert has confirmed to AllThingsD that the T-Mobile Moto X variant will only be available through Motorola itself in the short term. He hints that the network could offer the Android flagship in its stores, but any announcements would come later. Pricing also remains a mystery; it's not clear if Motorola will offer UnCarrier-style down payments instead of asking shoppers to pay in full. Either way, T-Mobile fans who crave a Moto X should be prepared to jump through some hoops.

More than 40 percent of active Android devices now run Jelly Bean, Gingerbread stubbornly holds steady

The last time Google visited Jelly Bean's user saturation numbers, it took the combined efforts of 4.1 and 4.2 to edge out Gingerbread's (v2.3.3 through 2.3.7) hold on the user base. Not anymore; the latest numbers from the Android Dashboard show the base version of Jelly Bean, Android 4.1, representing 34 percent of the active devices -- singlehandedly surpassing the old guard's 33 percent share of the market. When combined with the rest of the Jelly Bean contingent (Android 4.2 and above), Google's latest flavor of Android crushes Gingerbread with a 40.5 percent majority.

Froyo (v2.2), Eclair (v2.1) and Ice Cream Sandwich (v4.0.3 through 4.0.4) all took modest hits as well, though the latter of the trio retained its third-place position with 22.5 percent of active users. The only builds to hold steady? Honeycomb (v3.2) and Donut (v1.6), each retaining a miniscule 0.1 percent of the market. We'll admit, it's cute to see these old versions hang on, but please -- if you're still rocking a handset running Android 1.6, do us all a favor and turn it off.

Strategy Analytics: Android claimed nearly 80 percent of Q2 smartphone share

Strategy Analytics Android represents nearly 80 percent of phones shipped in Q2

Multiple analyst groups recently gave us a look at second quarter smartphone market share by the manufacturer. Today, Strategy Analytics is breaking down that market share by platform -- and it's clear that Google is still on a roll. Android jumped 10 points year-over-year to reach almost 80 percent of the world smartphone market during the spring quarter, hitting a record high. Some of this rise came at the expense of Apple, which dipped three points, but most of the casualties were in the "others" category led by BlackBerry and Nokia's soon-to-vanish Symbian. Microsoft can claim a small victory, though. Windows Phone climbed slightly to 3.9 percent of the market in Q2, giving it a level of influence not seen in three years. While we're not necessarily looking at the new status quo for the smartphone industry, it's clear that the days of neck and neck competition are behind us.
