Moto X custom order shipping slips to 8 days
When Google and Motorola announced the new Moto X smartphone and all the custom features many were extremely excited. Being able to customize a smartphone, have it built in the USA (Murica) and delivered to your door all in 4 days was their promise. Last week we confirmed the shipping times might be slightly delayed, due to demand, but will get to that 4-day mark soon.
Well, today we can officially confirm that customized Moto X smartphones ordered from AT&T and Motorola’s Moto Maker site have officially been delayed a bit. They’re available as we speak for both new customers, upgrades, and to buy outright, but shipping has slipped to double their initial estimates.
Going through the process over on Moto Maker and customizing your beautiful new smartphone is a breeze, and it will still be built and assembled in the USA and delivered right to your doorstep. However, at the time of writing this the shipping times are currently 8 days out, and that could push further back now that they’ve fully opened the site this afternoon.
Motorola warned us that high demand might cause initial delays and slipping in ship times, but after they improve the process and iron out the kinks they state the 4-day shipping and delivery promise will be met. Hopefully once everything starts rolling smooth they’ll give us back the option for custom engravings too. Oh, and as a reminder, these customization options will arrive later this year for Verizon Wireless customers, so get excited.

Moto Maker opens for online orders, full retail Moto X for $579
The Moto X design studio simply named Moto Maker is nothing new, and you should all know plenty about it by now. Being able to completely customize your new AT&T Moto X smartphone. Well, until today you could only order a phone in select AT&T stores (on-contract) and then proceed to the design studio, but today it’s open to the public and we also have full retail pricing.
The Moto Maker site is open for anyone and everyone to design their own custom Moto X. All those pretty color variations for the backplate, different colors on the front, accents, and even your wallpaper and boot-up message. Sadly we still don’t have engravings, but that is coming soon.
You can now head right to the Moto Maker site and get started whether you’re upgrading to the X on AT&T and signing a new contract, or they’ll let you buy it outright and custom order your own for $579 off contract. So it appears the full retail pricing for a custom X on AT&T is $579. I wonder what Google will ask for it when it arrives on the Play Store, if it ever does.
Moto is saying we’re all welcome to Design, Share, and Ship the Moto X with a brand new blog post this afternoon. I still think that sexy blue with white accents is the color for me, but we’d love to hear what you’d choose yourself in the comments below. Oh, and for those on T-Mobile. You can buy an AT&T model off-contract and customize it, then just unlock it for T-Mobile and still enjoy LTE. But we didn’t tell you that.
Who is getting a custom Moto X this week? More details on the device can be found from our full Moto X Review.

Sony NEX-5T camera revealed with easy Android NFC sharing
Smartphones lately have been focusing quite heavily on the camera side of things, and Sony is surely paying attention. We know they have a few neat new lens accessories that will attach to smartphones, which we’re expecting them to announce on September 4th, and yesterday they revealed a new point-and-shoot camera with easy NFC pairing to our Android devices.
The new Sony NEX-5T isn’t a standard point and shoot, and goes beyond the model before it or their traditional DSC cameras. It isn’t quite a DSLR camera either, and sits right in the middle of their line, but is packed full of features many will enjoy.
Sony’s NEX-5T features a 16 megapixel shooter, WiFi, NFC, and a nice little 3.0-inch display that offers 180-degree angles for the optimal shot preview. The full touchscreen doesn’t run Android, like we’ve seen with a few cameras as of late, but they still have NFC for tons of smartphone and mobile fun.
The NEX-5T will feature NFC built-in, and will easily be able to share and toss over pictures and videos to your NFC enabled Android 4.0+ smartphone or tablet. Obviously they’d like to think your Xperia Z or upcoming Honami will be in your hand, or the Xperia Z tablet, but it appears to be able to work with other devices too.
It also works with WiFi should you not have NFC, and the Wireless radios also serve to let users sync to their smartphone or tablet and control the camera via your mobile device. The “Smart Remote Control” app will give you live previews, settings to tweak without touching the camera, and of course a shutter button to snap away. We’ll be focusing on their lens attachments at IFA next week, but this isn’t bad either.
The new NEX-5T comes in at $700 as a kit, or $550 outright without the kit lens for those interested. More details can be found below.

HTC Butterfly S Hello Kitty version gets official on September 2nd
If you’re a fan of HTC’s latest smartphone and also happen to love Hello Kitty, we have a device for you. No seriously. The folks from HTC have just announced the Butterfly S ‘Hello Kitty’ edition of their 5-inch smartphone, and it will be available on September 2nd.
The popular online retailer ePrice managed to snag a few photos of the advert material, as well as a full image of the actual smartphone. Covered with Hello Kitty wallpapers and even the kitty on the back. It’s pretty funny if you ask us, but surely there’s a few million girls somewhere willing to buy one.
For those who don’t remember, the HTC Butterfly S is the follow-up to the original Butterfly, known as the DROID DNA in the states. Mixing the same 5-inch 1080p display with features from the HTC One. They added the UltraPixel camera, a bigger battery, and all those HTC Sense 5 features as well.
The Hello Kitty version will be the same HTC Butterfly S we already know and love. Complete with Blinkfeed, HTC Zoe, Android 4.2 Jelly Bean, the new Sense UI and all. It’s a limited edition device, and probably won’t last long. Talk about having your priorities straight, HTC, what’s going on here. Acronym time. Help The Kids, get them the Helly Kitty HTC Butterfly S, just in time for school.

Sony Xperia Honami full teaser video revealed ahead of IFA launch
At this point we’ve seen nearly every angle of the upcoming Sony Xperia i1 (Honami) smartphone, which is set to make its debut on September 4th at the annual IFA event. All the little teasers we’ve seen on Sony’s Facebook and Twitter this past few weeks were adding up to the video they just released.
This morning Sony dropped a new video called “The best of Sony is about to get even better” showing off their new phone in full, and at the end they remind us all by teasing the September 4th date. At IFA in Germany Sony will debut their new Honami smartphone, reportedly to be called the Xperia i1, and we already know all the details.
It has leaked in full almost once a week for over a month, and even yesterday a full set of photos were revealed at some sort of Sony press event. They were showing it off ahead of time, but the world will finally see it come the 4th. Without much talking, here’s the video.
Sony is making a few points here. One being it will have an awesome camera, which was already expected, another is that it’s super sleek and powerful. And finally that the phone will be waterproof, which most of us already expected. There’s no flaps over the ports either. It’s fully waterproof and still looks good. We’ve seen multiple reports for a T-Mobile launch, but hopefully it will hit a few other carriers as well.
Who wouldn’t want an impressive 5.0-inch 1080p quad-core powered smartphone from Sony that’s fully waterproof on their carrier? Maybe the only surprise left once they announce it is the price, availability date, and carrier options. We’ll see.

Google Glass in surgery provides a lesson for medical students
Google Glass looks to have once again gone inside the operating room. We first saw Glass being used during a procedure back in June when it was used during a PEG (Percutaneous Endoscopic Gastrostomy) procedure. That one was described as being “simple and commonly performed.” This latest is from Dr. Christopher Kaeding who used Glass during an ACL surgery procedure.
Perhaps more important here, while Kaeding was wearing Glass during the procedure, he was doing so in an attempt to allow others to view the procedure. It was said that a colleague and several students were able to view the procedure on their laptops from across town.
Seems like using Google Glass in this manner could make for a good learning experience. In fact, Ryan Blackwell, one of the students that watched spoke about how having this opportunity as a medical student is “really exciting.” While Kaeding was wearing Glass during the entire procedure, it seems it didn’t both him at all.
More to that point, he spoke about how once they got into the procedure he “often forgot the device was there.” Of course, while he was able to put Glass to the side and not have it get in the way, there is another potential use during cases like this.
Moving forward Google Glass could be used to help doctors collaborate with colleagues during a procedure and also be used to pull up other important items such as x-ray images or other reports dealing with the patients history.
