Backup Your EFS Partition with Wanam’s App

Screenshot_2014-11-27-11-27-23

ROM flashing seems to be an easy task even for Android newbies. Unlucky for some of Samsung users, the EFS partition can be accidentally wiped, leaving your precious smartphone unable to register with any mobile network.

To prevent yourself from EFS-related misfortune, you can backup the EFS partition, thus backing up your IMEI in the process on certain devices. XDA Recognized Developer wanam created an application that can backup this partition in several formats. A copy is saved on your SD Card, from which you can grab the backup and place it on other storage media.

The application works on most Samsung devices. The only requirement is root access. The application can also be used to restore the EFS partition when something goes wrong and you are left unable to get a mobile signal.

As you can see, ROM flashing is not always an easy ride. If you are not careful, your phone can quickly turn into a plastic paperweight. Don’t let this happen! Head over to the Samsung EFS IMEI Partition Backup forum thread to download the application and make a copy of your important data. More information regarding tool can be found in the application thread.

Android Community Weekly Digest: Nov. 30, 2014

The weekend was mostly likely a frantic one, with all the food, the shopping, and, of course, some much needed family down time. But it ain't over yet! Cyber Monday fast approaches and you are most likely trying to recover some energy, and maybe some money as well, in preparation for that, so we'll make this as quick and as painless as possible. Presenting Android Community's Weekly Digest covering November 24 to November 30, 2014, a.k.a. The Thanksgiving Edition.

We are launching a new venture with StackSocial to bring the sweetest deals on gadgets, accessories, and toys to match your digital lifestyle, and we've started off with 10, yes TEN, deals for Black Friday. But don't worry if you missed that chance, as there will be a lot more to come. Head on over to the DEALS section of Android Community (or click this link) to see what's up for grabs. We will be highlighting some of the more interesting ones each week, so be sure to keep your eyes peeled for them.

Black Friday Frenzy, Cyber Monday Madness

By now everyone, even those outside the US, knows how crazy shops get during this season and naturally, there were many, many promos and deals to be had. But fret not if Friday passed with nary an item in your shopping cart, because there are still a few bits and pieces left when Monday dawns. Motorola will be kicking off its 2nd gen Moto X discount, Amazon still has the Fire Phone at $199 and is still selling the Chromecast at a reduced $23. A lot of other deals are still in effect until Monday, so better not stow away those cards yet for one last holiday hurrah.

India: the market's new darling

After getting a foothold in China, It seems that the industry is slowly shifting its eyes towards India. Google fired the opening salvo by launching Android One on three local manufacturers. But instead of taking the market by storm, it seems that the new breed of smartphones is meeting some cold reception, thanks in no small part to Google overlooking the local smartphone business culture. Other smaller players are also trying to take a stab at the market. Xiaomi's Redmi Note makes its debut in India, with Fleksy bundled inside. OnePlus has just announced its still invite-only India launch in partnership with Amazon India. But surprisingly, Cyanogen, Inc., the very same people who make the CyanogenMod 11S OS on the OnePlus One, revealed an exclusive deal with India's Micromax, much to the confusion and dismay of the Chinese startup. We are likely to see more of this drama unfold in the coming days.

Moto 360 and its new look

Not exactly a holiday discount, but Motorola has finally made available the silver and gold metal straps for the round smartwatch, giving it an even classier facade. In addition to that, it has also made available for purchase both the Horween leather and the metal straps so that owners of the Moto 360 can now mix and match as they please, without having to spend on another unit.

Our Favorite Android, iOS, and Windows Phone Apps of the Week

A smartphone is only as great as its apps, and developers were hard at work again this week to make your pocket computer just a little bit better. This week iOS saw a swell of platform-only apps whereas Android was a little light. I also came across an amazing language-learning app for Windows Phone that's giving me only mild OS jealousy. Take a look at this week's new smartphone superpowers.

Avoid Obstacles and Keep Going in LineBox Game

LineBox

There’s a game for every occasion, whether you want something with a well crafted story, a strategy game that requires patience and planning, or a casual game for when you’re bored and want to pass some time. LineBox, a game by XDA Forum Member lakrsv, falls in that last category–but definitely not in the last place.

LineBox is a minimalistic game where you control a small block. Your goal is simple: get the highest score possible by avoiding obstacles on your way. To do so, you can swipe up and down (or tap) to change your block’s position. The game gets harder as you go, but you can fortunately pick powerups on your way to help you break your high score. You’ll find some that will increase your speed and give you a good leap, and others that will decrease your block’s size, allowing you to dodge obstacles more easily. The latest update (released just a few hours ago) also adds a new powerup that will increase the gap between obstacles. Additional powerups are planned in future updates as well.

To add to the fun, you can also compete with your friends via the leaderboards (note that since this is provided by the Google Services, you’ll need those installed and a Google+ account; this is only necessary if you want to view the leaderboards, you can still play the game without them). Achievements will also be arriving in a future update.

If you’re looking for a game that’s simple to pick up but still provides a great amount of fun, then LineBox is exactly what you want — visit the LineBox forum thread to get started straight away.

Alcazar Puzzle to challenge your noodle in android game

Puzzle solving games on mobile devices are not as simple or as popular as say, match 3 or endless runners. But a certain sector of the mobile society prefer this type of game that will challenge their brain power even while having fun. Alcazar Puzzle would like to state its case as to why you should add it to your game collection.

The object of the game is pretty simple (on paper at least): enter a room, visit the square to solve a puzzle, and then leave. There are over 40 kinds of puzzles that you can choose to exercise your logical and mental skills. And they're not something you can bluff or guess your way out of them. Each of them has a unique solution to each problem or puzzle, and you will arrive at the end of it with patience and perseverance. Unless, you're a super genius, in which case, this should be easy peasy.

While there are only 40 levels to complete, there are hundreds more that will be available when you make your in-app purchases. And the game developers have also promised the game will have no ads that can interrupt your thought process, because you don't need the distraction of having those ads pop up while you're in the middle of an intense game.

So if this is the type of game that can get you through that difficult day at work, you can download Alcazar Puzzle for free from the Google Play Store. The in-app purchases range from $0.99 to $4,probably worth it if you're a puzzle fan.

Plan V is a truly portable emergency charger for your smartphone

Battery problem solutions are very much needed when smartphones are always running out of juice since we're playing games, working, social networking, etc when mobile. More and more crowd-funded products are showing up in the market, all with the aim of becoming the next big thing in battery solutions. Our nominee for today is Plan V, a portable charger for emergency cases when your battery case or your power bank just won't work.

Plan V is just small enough to put on your keyring so it's literally handy. And you don't need to constantly charge it as it is powered by 9 volt batteries, which you can buy at any convenience store. That also means you will not run out of juice to charge your smartphone, as long as you have spare batteries in your bag.

This product came out of the developers' personal experience when their back up batteries failed them when they were in a remote area in Bogota, Colombia and they were hopelessly lost when trying to find their hostel. They had to go through a few close calls, but when they eventually survived, they decided to create a "failsafe charging device" that will not just keep you in contact but can also keep you safe in emergency situations.

The developers of the device are trying to raise $30,000 to be able to create and distribute the charger. If you believe in a product like Plan V, then head on over to their Kickstarter page to be able to support them and you have 25 days to do so.

How to Control Both Moto G and Moto E LEDs

Moto G LEDs

Notification LEDs offer a great way to check for notification at a glance on the Moto G (2013) and Moto E. That being said, you may want greater control over them to check on charging status as well or even your eMMC (internal or external storage) activity. All of this is possible, assuming your device is already rooted.

XDA Recognized Contributor matmutant has written two detailed tutorials on how to control your device’s LEDs for various uses. As it turns out, both the Moto G and Moto E have two white LEDs each (note that both LEDs occupy the same hole; you can check matmutant’s blog post for detailed information on how he found this out). You can control them by writing to the files in the following directories:

  • /sys/class/leds/white/: first LED, usually lights up when notifications are received. On the Moto G, this LED can be dimmed (by writing to the brightness file, as explained below).

  • /sys/class/leds/charging/: second LED, available but never used by default by the system. Cannot be dimmed (at least not without modifying the HAL).

You’ll find two files of interest there:

  • brightness: this file can be used to control the LED’s brightness and state (0 means “off”, anything higher (up to 255) indicates the brightness or simply means “on” if the LED can’t be dimmed).

  • trigger: you can use several triggers to control the behavior of the LED. These depend on the device, but some interesting examples include mmc* to monitor the eMMC activity and battery-* to indicate the charging status.

Moto E LEDs

LEDs for the Moto E

A useful example for this would be to use one LED to indicate the charging status, and the other for notifications. You can go even further by using an automation utility (e.g. Tasker) to change the LEDs’ state or triggers based on your own events.

It’s worth noting at this point that /sys/ is exported by the kernel on startup, in order to expose information about the hardware using sysfs; it can also be used to control devices via their attributes, as is the case here. (/sys/class/ offers symlinks to different classes of devices, using human readable names.) Because this is done at startup, the values you set will not persist after a reboot. Fortunately, you can use an init.d script so that your changes are automatically applied on startup. A short tutorial on how to do that is also provided. If your ROM doesn’t support init.d, then you’ll have to use an automation tool instead to run the necessary commands after startup.

For more detailed information on this, make sure to check the Moto G LEDs Custom Controls and Moto E LEDs Custom Controls threads, as well as matmutant’s blog posts about Controlling the Moto G LEDs

Desire 620 rumored to be HTC’s newest mid-level smartphone

If the leaks and reports are correct, the HTC Desire 620 might just be the OEM's newest mid-range offering that has a lot of promise and possibilities. While the original post in the Bulgarian website where it was first spotted has now been pulled down, it was too late and people were able to get a preview of the newest smartphone (if you can actually trust the source).

The Desire 620 has an all plastic build and is run by an interchangeable 2100 mAh battery. It will supposedly have a 5-inch 720 display that will run on a quad-core 1.2GHz processor, which may very well be the Snapdragon 410. It has 1GB of RAM and 8GB of internal storage, with the option to expand it through an SD card. Camera-wise, it reportedly has an 8MP main camera, while for selfies, a 5PM camera is a more than adequate for your front-facing camera needs. It also has dual front-facing speakers, if you look really closely at the leaked images.

Compared to the Desire 610 launched earlier this year, this supposed new model seems slightly better only. And compared to HTC's flagship device, the One (M8), this one of course seems sorely lacking, but since it looks like it's going to be positioned as a mid-level smartphone, then that is totally understandable. We would also like to see how this can stack up against the more lower-end HTC Desire 510, which is already pretty good for its price range.

There is no word yet on when the HTC Desire 620 will be available in the market and what its pricing range will be. But since the leaked pictures show it is retail-ready, we can expect the announcement in the next few days or so.

Moto X tempts you to get it with Moto Maker in new ad

While Motorola's Moto X seems like a more than decent smartphone, sales haven't been something to write home about. And since this whole holiday weekend is one big opportunity for OEMs to sell even more units, they have come up with a pretty nifty ad that would like to entice those window shopping for a new smartphone to consider the flagship device for their new purchase.

The ad features Ben, a somehow very indecisive young man, who keeps making changes on his Moto X through the Moto Maker, much to the chagrin of his doppleganger, who is working on a (hopefully) fictional version of the Motorola factory. He is in charge of making all the changes to the Moto X, and since Ben seems to be quite a weird person, then the alterations become more and more absurd. We end up with an inscription to "The Panda King" and as ridiculous as it is, yes, the Moto Maker will still do it for you.

The ad isn't as funny as it thinks it is, but it does get its point across, that you can make your Moto X on the Moto Maker as personal as possible. The first generation of the Moto X actually only allowed this personalization if you bought your smartphone through AT&T. But the 2014 edition seems to be making up for it, and the marketing campaign for it is much better, as evidenced by this ad.

This coming Cyber Monday from 11AM to 5PM CST, those who are interested in getting the new Moto X should register to receive a discount coupon. They'll be able to get the 16GB model for $359, a $140 discount from its original price of $499. However, offer is good only until supplies last.

Samsung working on a new smartwatch with rotating bezel?

Samsung is cooking up something. Of course, that is always the case but any news or clues of an upcoming smartwatch can be exciting. A patent has recently surfaced about a round smartwatch with rotating bezel. It’s still a concept/patent application but the idea is actually interesting.

The design shows a rotating bezel—in this case, a ring that can be controlled by simple rotation. Tasks and To-Do’s are shown in a pie which makes it more fun to look at. It could just be one view though but we’re not sure.

Samsung is not new to the smartwatch market but it will only gain more competitors. Right now, it’s one of the forerunners in the industry. Apple might rival Samsung in this area but the Cupertino company has yet to release the Apple Watch and prove to the market that theirs is better.

A rotating bezel on a smartwatch is definitely new but some sports watches already have this kind of feature. The patent application was published by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) this week. The document showed that this was submitted last February.

A new round smartwatch with a rotating bezel from Samsung , actually, from any manufacturer is nice. We’re not sure if Samsung will release such smartwatch but I don’t see any reason why not. We hope this one will arrive with the Galaxy S6 or as one of the new Gear watches. We’ll see.

Google shows off Black Friday/Cyber Monday Play Store deals

Black Friday is here again, the day when people all across the country lose their minds and have brawls in stores over items that are on sale. Google is participating in the Black Friday and Cyber Monday shenanigans this year and you won't get punched in the mouth trying to take advantage of these deals.

Today through Monday Google is offering a $50 Play Store credit with the purchase of some devices. That means you buy the device and get a bunch of apps for free. The $50 credit comes with the purchase of a Nexus 6, Nexus 9, LG G Watch, LG G Watch R, Sony Smartwatch 3, Moto 360, Samsun Gear Live, and Asus ZenWatch.

That LG G Watch is on sale along with that $50 Goggle Play credit at a price of $99, it used to be $299. Chromecast is also on sale for $25, which saves you $10 off the normal price of the device.

If you have been eyeing a Nest Thermostat, this is the time to buy with the Nest gadget on sale for $199, it was $249 before. The Nexus 9 WiFi models are also on sale for $50 off. Sadly, some reports indicate that if you can order the Nexus 6, it isn’t shipping for 2-3 weeks.

E-Labels Act signed, no need to display regulator logos

Your future gadgets will no longer bear the regulatory text usually found at the back. This is according to a new E-Labels Act that said products like tablets and smartphone could provide the needed information within the software of the device. No need to include the text and symbols because companies have been asking to save some more design space.

Removing this standard procedure will benefit the tech companies because it will also save them time and resources. However in Europe, law has not been changed yet so brands are still required to include the “CE” mark. The new law was passed in the US so it doesn’t apply in the European region. This means devices released in Europe must bear the CE logo.

How important are these logos anyway? These symbols are used to inform consumers that a product is compliant with the standards set in different countries. Environmental benchmarks and safety tests are conducted and must be met first to gain those important marks. In some countries, forging the marks can result to imprisonment or fine. Usually, you’ll see the FCC and CE marks to show the gadget complies with the standards. But with the increasing demand for smaller and smarter devices, companies are having a hard time including them to the design of the product and the packing itself.

The E-Label Act reads:

As devices become smaller, compliance with physical label requirements can become more difficult and costly.

Many manufacturers and consumers of licensed devices in the United States would prefer to have the option to provide or receive important Commission labelling information digitally on the screen of the device.

The solution now is to simply include the information on the software. Physical label requirements don’t make sense now because they can become costly and digital information is the way to go.

President Barack Obama signed the E-Label Act himself. The act is aimed to alleviate the need to display logos required by US authorities. Other logos by regulators must still be displayed though.
