Huawei P8 Lite gets TENAA certification

There were some rumblings early in the year about a “lite” version of the Huawei P8 – a “flagship killer” from one of China’s stronger competitors in the smartphone business. From what this new certification shows us, the Huawei P8 Lite should be unveiled at the upcoming London event of the Chinese manufacturer in April 15, if all things go well. As the name implies, we could see a smaller, toned down version of the flagship device.

The certification from TENAA – China’s FCC parallel – confirms the existence of such a device. As a bonus, they usually post pictures of devices they certify, and today we’re getting a good look at the Huawei P8 Lite. Check out the images below to get a feel for this new Huawei offering.

From what we could gather from the certification data, the Huawei P8 Lite will sport a a 5-inch HD (720p) display powered by an octa-core 1.2GHz Kirin 620 CPU. That will be supported by 2GB RAM along with 16GB of internal storage. There will be a 13MP/5MP camera combo.

The TENAA data is usually light on the specs, so we expect more data to come in soon as the launch date nears. At this point, we can say it’s a bit smaller than the rumored 5.2-inch screen of the Huawei P8. The processor is also lighter than the octa-core Kirin 930 processor of the “flagship” unit.

Steven Universe comes to your mobile device in Attack the Light

If you're a fan of the Cartoon Network animated series Steven Universe, or even if you're not, but you're looking for a fun turn-based RPG, then this new Android game should be on your TBD (to be downloaded) list. Attack of the Light is now available on Android devices and you get to enjoy an all-new storyline from the creator of the series herself and even the original voice cast have lent their voices to this simple but fun game.

If you don't know the series yet, Steven Universe is all about the titular character and his three friends named Amethyst, Garnet, and Pearl. Together these four protect the planet from evil forces. Unfortunately, Steven kinda screwed up in this game's storyline and unwittingly unleashed a monster that wants to gobble up the entire world with its light creatures. So now, with the help of your fingers and your mobile device, you get to save the universe through this game.

Don't worry, you'll be equipped with all sorts of magical items, secret treasures to be discovered along the way, and each of the four characters' unique abilities and weapons. If you're lucky, you'll even get to unleash Alexandrite, a three-gem fusion that will obliterate everything in its way. This game is pretty easy to play because of its intuitive tap and swipe controls. Plus, you don't need to know much about the show to be able to understand, although it would probably be to your advantage if you knew a little about the four characters.

The game is available in several languages aside from English: Arabic, Chinese, French, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish and Turkish. Steven Universe Attack the Light is available to download from the Google Play Store for just $2.99, all-in and with no IAPs available.

Play Store 5.4 brings immersive listing, Android Lollipop only

No need to wait that long for immersive mode to arrive on your Android Lollipop-powered device because Google's user interface engineer Kirill Grouchnikov himself shared on his Google+ page some immersive previews as shown in Play Store. These images give us an idea how the new Google Play Store will look with a transparent status bar on Lollipop devices. According to Grouchnikov, the changes have started to roll out onto Google Play over the weekend. Don't be too excited though because these enhancements are available for Lollipop users only.

The changes are not that big but you'll notice something new. A transparent status bar will show when you view listings. You'll notice hero images for listings too inching higher on your smartphone's display slowly. As a result, there's less need to scroll because more information can be shown below the images. The bigger the space, the more details about a particular app can be displayed.

Again, this update is only for Android Lollipop users.

HTC replaces Blinkfeed app with Sense Home

The highly anticipated new flagship from HTC isn't out in the market yet, but they're already giving users a preview of what to expect from the HTC One M9 by changing the Blinkfeed app into a different creature altogether. When you update you Blinkfeed now, it will turn into HTC Sense Home, which is one of the main features they were bragging about regarding the soon-to-be-released (hopefully) smartphone from the OEM.

The HTC Sense Home app brings a lot more personalization features to your smartphone (of course, given that you're using an HTC). You can now put themes on your HTC device, and there's even a theme store in the app to help you out. You can change the colors, wallpaper, and icons on your smartphone, but you can also get individual items from the themes, in case the whole kaboodle is not your type. There are also sound bundles available at the theme store, plus a host of other simple personalization options.

Another thing they've added is the HTC Sense Home widget, which actually gives you the apps you usually use, depending on the time of day or your location. So if you're at the office, the widget will give you the work-related apps you need, or if you're out and about in the evening, then it will give you social sharing apps. It will also recommend to you the apps that it thinks you need, based on your ongoing app-related behavior and/or your location.

The HTC Sense Home app will work with your HTC One M8. However, we're not yet sure if it will work with some older versions. What the app does say is that some features require your device to have at least Sense 7. You can update or download the app from the Google Play Store.

Picture of supposed new Moto 360 smartwatch leaked on Weibo

While there are a growing number of players in the smartwatch market, one of the earliest OEMs to have made their mark in the market is Motorola and its Moto 360. Supposedly, it was the first round-faced Android Wear device to come out, but LG G Watch R beat them to the punch in terms of launching. And while the Moto 360 received stellar reviews, it just went quiet all of a sudden. However, a new image leaked on China's social networking giant might see the revival of the smartwatch.

Last month, there were already rumors that Motorola and Lenovo will be launching a successor to the Moto 360. Details were scarce however, except for the "vision" of the two OEMs to have more customization options, which Motorola specializes in with its Moto Maker. Lenovo meanwhile doesn't have a smartwatch of its own, so it's interesting to see why and how this partnership would look like. The supposed new smartwatch is that it will have a 360x360 resolution, which is quite an improvement from the current 320x290 of the Moto 360.

While the picture shows it is still going to be roundfaced of course, the resolution looks like it will be square (although you really can't tell from the leaked image). This could mean they've found a way to not waste the "dead zone" at the bottom of the circular display and instead pushed the display to the side.

The competition among Android Wear smartwatches is getting tougher and tougher, and so Motorola (and Lenovo) need to step it up a notch. LG in particular is making waves with its Watch Urbane, which is so far the nicest looking one in the block.

Rithm to challenge music streaming with cheaper price, messaging

The battle of the music streaming services just got even more interesting (and no, we're not talking about Jay Z's Tidal) with the arrival of another new challenger to the throne. Rithm has been in beta for some time now, but finally they're ready to take on the world, with a price tag that might attract those hold-outs for a paying service and a built-in messaging service that encourages sharing music with your friends.

The secret to attracting new users or to convince music lovers to abandon their current one or add another option to their mobile devices is a great interface, an extensive library, and a relatively cheaper price. So far from what we've seen, Rithm has a fighting chance (apart from its slightly bothersome name, which might irk spelling nazis). They have partnered with major music labels like Universal, Sony, Warner Brothers and even some indie label aggregating services like The Orchard and Merlin. They will even be bringing in later on Artist Shops where users can buy and share emojis and stickers, based on musicians like Steve Aoki, Migos, Zeds Dead, and The Chainsmokers.

In terms of user interface, it seems easy enough to understand, although it does lack a certain wow factor. But the built-in messaging might attract some people, particularly since it's easy to share songs with your friends, without really advertising it on other social networks (you don't want your officemates to know you listen to Ariana Grande non-stop).

But of course the biggest draw would be its price of $3.99 per month, which is better on the wallet than Spotify's $9.99 and most especially the $19.99 price tag on Jay Z's TIDAL. Now let's see if this new music streaming player can actually make a dent in the market. If you want to try it out, you can download the app for free from the Google Play Store.
