Stop the clocks with new Android game NOON

We don't know if it's just the masochist in us, but lately, games that are seemingly simple but increasingly frustrating and challenging have become a must have for mobile devices. The latest to join the fray is game developer Fallen Tree, and their new game NOON is out to test the patience of saints, but it will eventually be emotionally rewarding at least.

Calling it a "quick-fire test of nerves and reflexes", the objective is simple enough. There is a clock (which will eventually turn into several clocks) on your screen and you need to tap it when it strikes noon. Pretty easy right? But of course, as we've realized with games like this, nothing is ever easy. Aside from the fact that there will be multiple clocks eventually, they also become crazier, they move around, they dissolve, etc.

The increasingly difficult curve of the game will challenge your nerves of steel. There is even a warning to not throw your device at the wall, in case you get frustrated (which may become a real possibility eventually). The game is accompanied by a "cracking soundtrack" and in case you're feeling competitive, there are hi-score tables available. And if you need to boast about your high scores, you can share them on Facebook and Twitter.

For now, NOON is free to download on the Google Play Store. There are no in-app purchases but there are ads in between levels. Eventually, when the first content update arrives, to be able to play the additional modes, you would need to switch to paid mode. There is no announced price yet on how much you'd need to shell out to play more and to remove the ads as well.

Vektor: The Courier bike chase game arrives for Android

We haven’t had a fun endless runner in a while now, but it looks like Vektor: “The Courier” is set to change that situation. Imagine endless running in a high-tech, futuristic backdrop – that’s something I haven’t seen done yet. Or at least, we haven’t seen it done well enough to interest us. Maybe this game changes that.

In Vektor, users play "The Courier," a bike rider on a mission to deliver incriminating data on a supposedly corrupt government. That plotline suggests a lot of chases and suspense. We hope the game gives good value to the plot.

Vektor1

The plot basically means that your courier will have to ride his futuristic motorbike and zoom through highway traffic – weaving in and out through lanes of cars, enemy mercenaries. You also get to fight boss baddies along the way. Pretty interesting.

The game is set in a dark, neon-lighted cyberpunk world and has a cool soundtrack to boot (if you see the trailer above). The game uses pixelated graphics to give it a retro gaming feel. The game was initially offered on iOS and not Android users can grap a copy of it. Have fun!

Learn basic coding by helping The Doctor in new BBC game

Learning to code can sometimes be a very tedious task, particularly if you're someone not that crazy about details or numbers and figures. But if you think it's a necessary skill you have to acquire, then there are ways to help you out or get you more interested in it. BBC believes more people would want to learn it if it's put into a game format. That's precisely what they've done with the release of The Doctor and the Dalek, a new game for tablets released on Android and other platforms today.

Doctor Who is a hugely popular sci-fi TV series across the pond but has been making waves in the US as well the past few years (well, at least, a cult following). This new game is voiced by the current incarnation of the Doctor (Twelve), Peter Capaldi. He has been forced to go on an adventure with one of his most dangerous enemies, the only Dalek (an alien race of cyborgs) left alive. They must team up to destroy the Orb of Fates because if it falls into the wrong hands, it will have disastrous consequences.

To help them in their quest, you need to equip the Doctor and the Dalek with abilities like flight, spreading fire and super speed. In order to do so, you need to solve some coding puzzles based on Boolean logic and "if" statements. Teachers and parents can also learn how to use the game for educational purposes through resources that BBC has now updated. This game is part of their Make It Digital initiative that seeks to inspire a new generation of coders, programmers, and digital technology experts.

The Doctor and the Dalek can be played online for free, but is not available in all territories. It will soon be available to download, together with four new levels, for your Android tablet through Google Play Store.

Titanium Backup gets updated, brings Lollipop improvements

Why do we keep using Titanium Backup even if it looks clunky and requires root access? Well, because it’s one of the best apps for doing what it does – that is, make backups of your phone data and system. Very few backup apps out there could claim to be able to do well what Titanium Backup offers to users (with rooted devices, of course).

The most recent update is a minor one, fixing some performance issues like the app crashing while detecting the SU and BusyBox processes. It also updated some language translations and worked on minor layout issues.

The really big update was the one that brought version 7.0, where the developers brought direct Android 5.0 Lollipop compatibility for the app. It also added support for saving backups to predetermined folders on your external SD card, something that Android KitKat was very, very bad at. External SD functionality is heavenly with Lollipop, so the developers took advantage of that.

Sad to say, the app still looks like it was developed in the early 2000’s – and that is putting it kindly. The developers have not brought it up to the level of Lollipop’s sleek and minimalist Material Design – heck, it’s even too homely to fit in a KitKat environment. I guess the developers can afford to take it slow on the redesign as they have an app that “just works” when it comes to backing up your phone data. Did we already say it requires root access? Well, it still does.
