Samsung Galaxy S6 visits India, rumors on a robust form factor

As the rumored launch date of Samsung’s upcoming flagship phone – the Samsung Galaxy S6 – draws ever nearer, we are flooded by a lot of rumors and news items regarding the elusive smartphone. An actual model has not been seen in the wild, and would most likely remain hidden until it is unveiled at MWC 2015 in Barcelona a month from now.

What we do have are these seeming confirmations – first by a shipping manifest document gathered by Zauba and is making the rounds in the tech sphere. The records point to two separate times when items coded as Samsung smartphones with model codes SM-G920V and SM-G920F were shipped to India. As you may not know, the Samsung Galaxy S6 will purportedly carry the SM-G920 model code. What is confirmed in the manifests is the 5-inch screen that the Galaxy S6 will be rumored to have. We’re left with other rumors to fill in the gaps – possibly a Quad HD 2560x1440 Super AMOLED screen. The declared price of the device is around USD$405, so we should expect it to retail at around USD$600-650.

Another rumor coming from notable French tech blog nowhereelse.fr is the rumored dimensions of the Samsung Galaxy S6, coming from a leak of a schematic rumored to be the Galaxy S6. The phone in the schematic has these numbers – 143.52mm in length, 70.70mm wide, and a thickness of 7.19mm. If this is indeed the Galaxy S6, it would be slightly slimmer than its predecessor, the Galaxy S5, at 8.1mm.

One month to go before we all see this come to reality, unless Samsung suddenly backs out on its MWC 2015 date. We assume that more and more details will come out in the next few weeks, so watch this space.

Google’s Project Tango tablet moving closer to reality

That’s one small step for a tab, one giant leap for all of its kind: Google has recently announced that Project Tango, a high-powered concept tablet enabling the user to recreate reality in digital form, has taken the next step towards actual realization by graduating out of its Advanced Technology and Projects (ATAP) division. That means that Google is actually thinking about the device's marketability and real-world applications.

The innovative search giant announced that, “after two fast-paced years in ATAP, and many technical successes, the Tango team is transitioning from ATAP to a new home within Google.” This means that Tango will not share the same fate as Google Glass and is taking that all-important next step towards being realized in one form or another.

Project Tango aims to recreate a digital version of the world around it like no thingamajig can, in 3D and in real time. Remember how Tony Stark dealt with the Chinatown crime scene in Iron Man 3? Using precise cameras, movement sensors, and depth-tracking, Tango can create a 3D image of its environment that can be manipulated according to the requirements of the user. While gaming seems to be the most obvious usage of this technology, recreating 3D environments in real time can also be useful for engineering, public safety, police work, and a whole new world of other applications.

It isn’t clear where Tango is currently within the Google framework, as the company has declined to discuss any specifics. Meanwhile, Korean smartphone manufacturer LG has reportedly announced its intentions to incorporate Tango’s technology in either a smartphone or a tablet to be launched this 2015. At the very least, we all know that Tango is very much alive and well, but whether it will be of any actual use to us is still up in the air. For Project Tango to move out of ATAP would be a very good sign that yes, the world needs this technology, and as such, the good folks at Google are working hard to bring this device to us, soon.

The mothership has finally decided that it’s probably time to bring you up to speed as you’ve been languishing in KitKat loneliness all this time.

Swiftkey releases Chinese version for Android devices

The Chinese New Year is still a few days away but Chinese-speaking (or rather, typing) Android users are getting an early present, as virtual keyboard SwiftKey has released the official Chinese version for smartphones and tablets. They've been beta-testing this particular version for a few months now, and after many tweaks and fixes, they are ready to release it as an official part of the free typing app.

The updated SwiftKey version for this particular language, the most popular one in the world with more than one billion speakers, has seven new input methods. And it also recognizes that there are several different languages within the Chinese version itself. The Simplified Chinese has the QWERTY input method, 12-key Pinyin input method, and the Stroke input method. Meanwhile, Taiwan Traditional Chinese has Full Key Zhuyin, 12-Key Zhuyin, and the stroke input methods. Hong Kong Traditional Chinese includes the Cangjie, Quick Cangjie, and stroke input methods as well.

The Swiftkey Heatmap learns from your typing methods and how you interact with your virtual keyboard so that it will eventually lessen the mistakes it makes when you're typing in Pinyin and it converts into Chinese script. It will understand what you want to say even when you use words that you haven't used before. Based also on your typing behavior, it will build an accurate prediction method. To make the process easier, you can even add your Gmail and social media accounts so the app can learn more about the language you use.

And in keeping with the celebration of Chinese culture, SwitfKey is giving you a special free theme to celebrate the upcoming Chinese New Year. The theme designer used a red design with a Xiangyun pattern. The newest update also adds two more languages: Lao and Khmer. You can download and update SwiftKey from the Google Play Store.
