Sony Xperia S, Ion, and Acro S Get Unofficial Android 5.0 Builds

xperia s

The Sony Xperia S, Acro S and Ion devices were first released at the beginning of 2012, and were the first line of phones which beared the Sony brand name. In this way, they were quite iconic, as they represented the end of an era of Sony Ericsson, and the beginning of Sony Mobile. And they started off on the right foot as well, adding the Xperia S AOSP as an experimental device, a tradition which sees us through the last couple of years. However, official software support for these three devices were later dropped after 18 months, with after-market developers taking them under their wing.

With this said, the Xperia S, Acro S, and Ion can now run Android 5.0 Lollipop thanks to these developers, namely Forum Member mickybart for the former, and XDA Recognized Developer BPaul for the latter two. Lollipop on the Xperia S comes in the form of a custom ROM called nAOSP (which stands for “near AOSP”) and basically comprises of AOSP with some additional features. The ROM seems to be in quite good working order with features such as GSM, WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS and the camera fully functional among others.

Android 5.0 on the Xperia Acro S and Ion are also in the form of AOSP ROMs, but it should be noted that the ROM for the Xperia ION is “devs only” and is most likely not ready to be used as a daily driver, or at least has a few problems yet to be ironed out. BPaul also convenient provides downloads of flashable ZIP packages which provide root access, CWM and TWRP, and Google Apps.

If you would like to check them out, head over to the Xperia S Android 5.0 nAOSP thread, and the Xperia Acro S and Ion Android 5.0 AOSP threads for more information.

Possible Samsung Galaxy S6 Specs Leak

Samsung-Galaxy-S5-tight

The two latest generations of flagship Samsung smartphones were quite successful in terms of sales, but many users openly criticized their build materials and design. Samsung has always used plastic as its build material of choice, whereas HTC switched its high end devices over to aluminum. Various reports on the Web claim that the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S6 will be redesigned from scratch to keep the Korean OEM on top in terms of sales.

The Chinese portal cnmo.com suggests that the Samsung Galaxy S6 might have already been spotted in the AnTuTu benchmark. The numbers shown in the leaked screenshot show that the Samsung Galaxy S6 may contain a 5.6-inch display with QHD (2560 x 1440) resolution. And if the screenshot is correct, it appears that Samsung will make use of the 64-bit architecture. The S6 might ship with the 1.8 GHz octacore Exynos 7420 CPU. Korean devices could feature an ARM Mali-T760 GPU, 3 GB of RAM, and 32 GB of storage. The S6 may have a 20-megapixel rear camera, a 5-megapixel front-facing camera. Let’s take a look at the screenie, shall we?

There have been reports that Qualcomm is having performance issues on the Snapdragon 810, which may delay the launch of several flagship devices–including the Qualcomm variant of Samsung Galaxy S6. It remains unknown when exactly we can expect the Samsung Galaxy S6 to be released. The most likely date, however, is early March during Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.

HTC One (M7) GPe Gets Lollipop, OTA Captured

htc-one-m8-and-m7-lollipop-660x400

Android Lollipop still has a very low market share, with less than 0.1% of the overall Android devices connected to Google Play services. This number will soon change, as some devices are getting official updates from their manufacturers.

Just two days ago, the Samsung Galaxy S5 received an Android 5.0.1 update in Poland. We didn’t have to wait long for the HTC’s response. The Taiwanese OEM started to push the Lollipop update for the Google Play edition of the HTC One (M7). The OTA update is 511 MB, and of course, it doesn’t contain the Sense.

To proceed with the update process, your device needs to have an Android 4.4.4 installed. Stock recovery is also required. The provided OTA will not work on devices with modified /system partition or converted from the regular HTC One. Thanks to XDA Senior Member ziaulh.ch who made a NAND backup, the derived update can be applied through the TWRP recovery.

If you’re using the HTC One (M7) and can’t wait for Lollipop to land onto your device, head over to this post by XDA Senior Member Daman09 who managed to capture the link to OTA available on Google servers in this post.

ADB Tools Connects Your Android Device with ADB over WiFi

ADB Tools

Normally anytime you need to connect your Android device to your PC with ADB, you probably scrummage around your drawer a little bit and find that tangled up spare USB cable for your device. Of course, this means that you’ll be limited by this physical cable form factor: untangling it, bending it at the right spot so there’s a connection, moving aside the TV remote, earphones and wallet on the table to make room for your device. So naturally, it wouldn’t hurt if there’s something that’ll make things a little easier, as ADB Tools does.

Developed by XDA Forum Member idragon81, ADB Tools is a handy app that enables you to connect your Android device to your PC with ADB over either USB or WiFi. Of course, the standout feature of this app is that it allows your device to connect wirelessly, and this is done simply by typing in “adb connect” followed by the IP address generated by the app into CMD on your PC. Idragon81 plans to hopefully integrate features such as start service on device startup and widget to toggle mode in the future.

ADB Tools is a simple app with a very practical and useful feature that Android devs will surely appreciate. If you would like to give this a whirl, head over to the ADB Tools application thread for more information.
