TWRP comes out with version 2.8, brings native MTP support

One of the most popular custom recoveries for Android devices is the Team Win Recovery Project, or better known to Android tweakers and modders alike as just TWRP. The group, led by XDA recognized developers “Dees_Troy” and “bigbiff”, has come out with a new major release compiled as version 2.8 which brings lots of new features and goodies to all and sundry.

The first thing you will notice from the changelog – which has a lot of new stuff – is the new native implementation of the C++ based MTP (Media Transfer Protocol). MTP is known for its capability to transfer various media files to and from portable devices. This makes transferring files from storage to emulated drives easier from within TWRP.

There is also the new feature of executing ADB commands from within the recovery, something that could not be done before. And with the release and rising popularity of smartwatches and other such wearable devices, TWRP has also made sure that it is compatible with most of the smaller screens found in smartwatches and the like.

For the full changelog, please check the source link. If you want to download and enjoy the new TWRP, download it straight from Team Win’s website. The installation of the custom recovery is as easy as you remember it, nothing’s changed. If you’re asking “what the heck is a custom recovery?” then this new version might not be for you.

LG G3 Stylus global rollout begins

LG went official with its new smartphone called the G3 Stylus late last month ahead of IFA 2014. The smartphone was a bit disappointing in some areas and isn’t going to be a competitor to the Galaxy Note line of smartphones. If you liked what you saw in the LG G3 Stylus, the good news is that the phone is set to debut in Brazil, Latin America, Central Asia, and other locations this week.

The big feature of the smartphone is the Rubberdium stylus pen that stores away inside the G3 Stylus smartphone. Using the stylus, the 5.5-inch screen accepts writing and sketching directly on the screen. The phone also has LG QuickMemo+ to let users take notes or draw directly on images or maps.

The LG G3 Stylus pen is also compatible with third party apps. On the rear of the smartphone is a 13MP camera with Touch and Shoot, Gesture Shot, and the phone has a front camera light. We already know the specifications of the smartphone under the hood, but if you missed them before read on.

The device uses a 1.3GHz quad-core processor, has a 5.5-inch 960 x 540 resolution screen, 8GB of storage, and 1GB of RAM. A microSD card slot allows for storage expansion. Power comes from a removable 3000 mAh internal battery. Android 4.4.2 KitKat is the OS and the smartphone will come in black, white, or gold colors.

Leaks show HTC possibly venturing to personal medical devices

With HTC keeping relatively quiet all throughout the craziness that was IFA 2014, you wonder how it’s going to try to keep itself competitive in the market as the holidays roll in and gadget frenzy will surely increase to fever pitch. There are rumors of HTC competing with GoPro for a mobile camera, and also a much-hyped smartwatch that was deferred to an early 2015 launch. But more surprising is @upleak’s news of the outfit venturing to personal medical devices.

The Twitter-based leaker has outed photos of personal medical devices under a naming code called “Tricorder”. If you are a Trekkie, then you will not miss the implied nod to the futuristic “tricorder medical scanner” which was one of Star Trek’s go-to gadgets. The photos show some of the gadgets in action – and that they could possibly be smartphone-connected for better data analysis and gathering.

The gadgets include the Tricorder blood system – most likely a personal blood analysis device. The Tricorder scope system is seen in the images with an ear inspection scope. The Tricorder urine system is pretty self-explanatory, and the Tricorder breath system is a breath analyzer.

HTC is probably looking for newer market spaces where they can expand to, because despite the relative success of the HTC One M8 – voted then as the best Android device of its kind – the competition in the smartphone market remains brutal. This is probably a movement towards consolidation and additional earnings, apart from the profits from its smartphone business.

Samsung confirms Galaxy Note 4 coming in October

In the excitement leading up to Samsung’s official announcement of their new Galaxy Note 4, they released several videos hyping up the S-Pen capabilities of the phablet. And when it was finally announced two weeks ago right before IFA 2014, the next question was: when will it finally be available for purchase? Well, the OEM has now sort of answered that question through another video, and Note fans will have to wait a few more weeks to finally get their hands on the newest member of the family.

But first, in the video, Samsung reminisced about the fact that the Note 1, when it was released in 2011, was ahead of its time. They even cite specific early reviews that mocked the phablet (a term that would be coined later on due to the Note) for its size, including Mashable which called it an “unwieldy beast”. Of course, they mentioned that staunch competitor Apple has now adapted to the bigger is better philosophy (well, screen-wise) when they announced that the newest iPhones would have bigger screens.

The video however emphasised that the Note is more than just about having bigger screens, it’s about productivity, innovativeness, and fun. It cites its multi-tasking capability and the S-Pen and its handwriting features, two things that the iPhone still hasn’t applied to the new models. The video goes on to show several tweets, again, mocking the new iPhone for having something that Samsung has already done two years before.

The most important thing however is that “the next big thing” will be arriving in retail stores by October 2014. As to when exactly in October, there is still no specific date and release details. All we know from their IFA 2014 launch is that Verizon, T-Mobile and AT&T will all be carrying the Galaxy Note 4, but there are no pricing details as of yet.

First Android One smartphones head to India packing MediaTek MT6582 SoC

The first time we heard about Android One was back in June when plans to make Android One devices were announced at Google I/O 2014. A few months after that announcement, Android One devices have been announced and hardware partner MediaTek has been announced as working on the project with Google.

Google has worked closely with hardware and phone makers to help build Android One devices that offer a good user experience while making the devices cheaper to purchase. Android One promises devices that have a lot of processing power to enable faster information access. The devices will also have high-quality front and rear cameras.

Expandable storage will be another hallmark of Android One devices along with features specifically targeting users in locations like India. Those features will include dual SIM cards, replaceable batteries, and integrated FM radios. All Android One smartphones will ship with the latest versions of Android directly from Google.

To make ownership less expensive, Android One devices using an Airtel SIM card will get free software updates for the first six months of ownership along with 200MB per month of app downloads without impacting data allowance. The first Android One smartphones will come from Micromax, Karbonn, and Spice. These devices are the Spice Dream UNO, Micromax Canvas A1, and the Karbonn Sparkle V with prices starting at Rs 6,399. These devices use the MediaTek MT6582 mobile SoC based on the ARM Cortex A7 processor.

HTC planning to out a new smartphone, codename ‘EYE’

Gadget leaker @upleaks has come up with news from HTC – one of the major players in the smartphone market that has been relatively quiet in comparison to all who took part in the IFA 2014 gadget rush. But according to the leak, they may be coming up with a new gadget, codenamed the “HTC Eye”.

We don’t know much about the gadget yet – only that it will have a big-ish 5.2-inch screen with full HD (1080p) resolution. That would give it a considerably dense pixel per inch (ppi) ratio of 423, making for a great display. The leaker also mentions that it might come with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 chipset – that means a quadcore processor at 2.5Ghz and an Adreno 330 GPU. Considering that only a few manufacturers have justified spending for Snapdragon 805s, the 801 may be the logical choice.

The HTC Eye, in whatever form it may take, is purportedly carrying the 13MP duo camera system that HTC likes to use on its premier phones. It might possibly be that this will be a Windows phone, or that most of the other specs might be taken from the HTC One M8. At this point in the game, nothing is sure yet.

With Google’s Android L launch just around the corner, it would be exciting for HTC to come out with a full-pledged Android L phone. Let’s keep watching this space, and we’ll let you know as soon as HTC lets slip a few more information about this new device.
