Super Monkey Ball now bouncing through your Android device

If you’re a fan of that crazy monkey from SEGA, then the newest edition of the Super Monkey Ball game would make you bounce all around the room. Yes, you guessed it right, it’s called Super Monkey Ball Bounce and it is now available for your Android device in all its bouncy and colorful glory.

Super Monkey Ball has been easing boredom since 2001 when it was launched in Nintendo’s GameCube and was probably one of the first titles that SEGA launched on a different platform, particularly a staunch competitor. There have been several mobile versions since then, ever since they realised that phones are more than just for texting and taking calls. The latest edition now lets you bounce through 119 levels and six different worlds as you tilt and swipe your monkey through jungles, volcanoes and glaciers.

Aside from that, there are also puzzles you can play through if you’re too dizzy to bounce around. You also get to meet different weird monkey friends, each with their own unique powers. And of course, if you’re one of those competitive, social players, you can link your Facebook to the app and get to beat your friends on the leaderboard.

Super Monkey Ball Bounce is free to download from the Google Play Store. There are some in-app purchases available, so if a kid (or a sneaky friend) is using your device, make sure you disable that feature before letting them loose on games like this. There are some complaints that the game has too many ads or it lags because of these ads, but this will probably be fixed if you make those aforementioned in-app purchases (sneaky monkey).

Jawbone app now able to link with other devices

When Jawbone fitness wristbands hit the market in 2012, you could only link them with proprietary Jawbone-created apps – which was quite understandable at any rate, as people had no problem using the app on their iPhones and Android devices. In a surprising move, Jawbone has announced that it is opening up its API to the sensors in Android, iOS, and WP 8.1 devices.

Currently, Jawbone's app only collects data only from Jawbone UP and UP24 wristbands. This new shift in Jawbone’s API principles will mean that the app can now also collect data from any supported device with motion sensors – on Samsung’s Galaxy S5 for instance, or the iPhone 5s' M7, or any of the Windows Phone equivalents. These data, once synced, now goes straight into Jawbone’s app for analytics.

Even third party wearables – as these are also marketed for the health and fitness-conscious – will be able to link in to Jawbone’s app. This action will leverage on the new and upcoming markets that Android Wear is trying to tap into. Jawbone is supposedly in talks with ASUS to bundle their app with the ASUS Zenwatch – the newest entry into the Android Wear fold.

According to the announcement, these new apps will be released in the next month, give or take a few days. It is likely that the iPhone app will come out first, then on Android, then on Windows Phone, and finally Android Wear. The app will still gather data from your Jawbone UP wristbands, of course, but the app has just become a little more cosmopolitan at this point.

Tamagotchi makes a comeback (again) through Android app

Since throwbacks and nostalgia seem to be the in things nowadays, are we really surprised that things from our childhood are coming back to give us that “has it really been ____ years since I watched/listened to/did this” feeling? One toy that some of us may have fond memories of playing with (and killing them eventually) is the tamagotchi. And while the actual toy is indeed making a comeback, there’s also a new way of playing with your virtual pet and that is through an Android app.

Tamagotchi Classic 2nd gen is exactly like you’d imagine the classic virtual pet to be, but this time on your smartphone. But actually, this isn’t the first time that it has found its way to the digital world. Tamagotchi Classic was launched almost a year ago, but this 2nd gen version features all new characters that you can turn into your virtual pets, for practicing on having real pets or just because you have nothing better to do than to feed, bathe or entertain these weird creatures.

Just like the previous version, the app has two modes. TOY mode will bring back those warm feelings of playing with your tamagochi back in the day as you can raise it in its virtual classic toy shell. The APP mode however brings more color and a modern feel in an updated, full-screen environment. As you raise your tamagochi, you can collect stars and unlock items like wallpapers and shells, which you can then use to customize the game.

While your tamagochi is sleeping or in the bathroom, you can also play mini-games like the memory match puzzle. Tamagotchi 2nd gen is available for $3.99 from the Google Play Store, still cheaper than getting the new actual tamagotchi which costs around $20.

Twitter testing “Buy” button for artists, brands, charities

We all knew this day was coming, and now it’s almost upon us. Yes, pretty soon, we can all go and buy stuff on Twitter. The hugely popular social network has announced that it is now road-testing the “Buy” button that would allow users to make purchases while inside Twitter. They are trying it out on a percentage of US-based accounts and on several artists, brands and charities just to see how the public would respond and how easy and secure it is, as they claim.

Twitter says that users will be able to make purchases with just a few taps. When you see the buy button and click on it, you’ll get to see a few more details about the product you want to purchase, like its specifications, size, color, etc. On the same page, you will need to enter the shipping information as well as your credit card details. Once you’ve confirmed all the details, the information will then be sent to the specified merchant for processing and delivery. Some of the accounts being tested out are those for Demi Lovato, GLAAD, Home Depot, Pharrel, RED and many other brands, artists and charities.

The information you’ve provided will be “encrypted and safely stored” so that when you make your next transaction, you don’t need to put it in all over again. Of course entering details like that will make you worried, given how hackers are getting wiser and shrewder but Twitter assures that the information is “processed securely” and isn’t shared with other sellers without your permission. But this is a risk that we all take with all online transactions, so it’s up to you whether you’ll trust Twitter or not.

Now what this means to social networking in general still remains to be seen. Some see it as a death knell to the joy of browsing through your Twitter feed without being harassed by online sellers. It will probably be disruptive at times, but if people who have no intention of buying can see past that, then it wouldn’t hurt to have that option for those who are interested in making purchases eventually. Let’s wait and see how this plays out.

Survey says iPhone 6 won’t cause Android users to jump ship

Surveys are just that, a representation of the massive totality based on the opinion of a representative few – albeit with scientific research foundations. How much stock we put on their reliability changes from person to person, but the results usually stand proud regardless of your doubts or approval. This specific one leans it favor towards the Android ecosystem – that only 5% or less of Android users will jump over to iOS with the upcoming iPhone 6 launch.

The survey was done by an outfit called Survata – a survey group that has clients among Fortune 100 companies. The method was pretty straightforward – approach respondents on sites around the Internet and ask if they want to complete a survey to unlock premium content on those sites. The company was honest enough to report a 3.3% margin of error, but believes that the method is solid. The respondents also reported what phones they currently own.

The main conclusion is this, that there is an “utter lack of interest in Android owners to switch over to the new iPhone”. The “utter lack of interest" in Apple's upcoming device is represented in a number – only 5% will surely make the jump to the new iPhone 6 if given the chance. If you ask me, I will admit that I’m biased as heck and would not even touch the box of an iPhone with a stick. But the data speaks for itself – Android users are pretty much content with the technical environment they’re in right now. Does this piece of data speak for all Android users?

Surveys will tell you that these are representative data – in this case, it will be accurate to over 96% of the market. Do with the data what you will. I won’t make that jump – and I know of other people who won’t. What’s you take on it? Ping us back on the comments section and let us know your thought on this.
