LG Canada says G2 will get Android 4.4 KitKat by March

LG G2

LG G2 owners may have to wait a while to get the Android 4.4 KitKat software that their Nexus 5-toting counterparts already enjoy. A spokesperson for the company's Canadian branch informs MobileSyrup that the G2 should get its KitKat upgrade late in the first quarter of 2014 -- in other words, March. While that will disappoint early adopters, LG does note that every local carrier will receive the update at about the same time. Whether or not Americans will see the new OS any sooner is another matter. We've asked the company about its US upgrade schedule, and we'll let you know if it can provide some details.

Updates to Virtuous Ten Studio and Remote Theme Injector

VTS

Well over a year ago now, we brought you news of a tool that solved the problem of users not being able to distribute themes for paid apps. Remote Theme Injector did exactly as its name suggests and “injects” the necessary themed elements into an APK, thereby allowing themers to make their work on paid apps available without distributing warez. The tool was often updated by its developer, XDA Senior Moderator and Recognized Developer Diamondback, whose name you might recognise from another project, Virtuous Ten Studio.

The Remote Theme Injector has since been incorporated into VTS, adding yet another useful feature into an already incredibly versatile piece of software for a variety of Android projects. VTS itself is essentially an IDE and a whole lot more, aimed at everyone from ROM developers to smali gurus, and now themers. It is capable of not only decompiling, modifying, and recompiling applications, but also modifying the m10 files that are a major component of HTC’s Sense UI, as well as the unpacking/repacking of boot images. That’s barely scratching the surface of what VTS is capable of, and I highly recommend checking out the VTS home page and XDA forum thread for more information.

The updated RTI bundled with VTS takes advantage of these features, and now allows for smali modifications to be included as part of the application themes. For a perfect example of just what is possible with RTI, check out the most recent batch of TapaTalk Pro/Free themes by XDA Recognized Developer and Themer Whiskey103. Whether you have the compulsive desire to ensure that all your installed apps maintain a strict theme or just fancy giving TapaTalk a quick makeover, this is definitely something worth looking into.

Floating Music Controls with Beat Player

beat

A device’s music player is one of the most important apps for almost everyone. This is because most of us love music and listen to it on various mobile devices and in various places. However, finding a good, free player is not an easy task. And finding a free and innovative player is almost impossible.

XDA Senior Member dakdroid came up with some interesting ideas and created an innovative player: Beat. The application uses floating controls similar to Facebook Chat Heads. Because of this, a small control panel is always visible, no matter which application is opened in the foreground.

The floating control panel is not its only unique function. In the era of cloud services, many of our songs are kept on Dropbox or Google Drive. Beat can stream the music directly from the above. Furthermore, not all free players have equalizers and visualizations. Beat has them, and allows you to select or create a preset to get the most out of your favorite music. The application uses Metro-styled tiles, which are fully customizable. Different list styles, colors, and sizes can also be selected.

Make your way to the application thread and give it a shot. Don’t forget to provide your feedback in the thread.

HTC One developer and unlocked models start receiving Android 4.4 KitKat in the US

HTC's Peter Chou wants you to have KitKat

If you were bold enough to buy a Developer Edition HTC One or its unlocked sibling, today is your lucky day. HTC's US division has announced that it's rolling out an Android 4.4 KitKat upgrade to both One variants, weeks ahead of the expected update for carrier-locked models. Sense 5.5 should also be a part of the package. While the KitKat upgrade isn't reaching these units as quickly as it did for the Google Play Edition, it's safe to say that many One owners will have another reason to celebrate this Thanksgiving weekend.

Bring Back Battery Statistics on KitKat with Xposed Module

Android-phone-battery-drain-fix

Android 4.4 has been quite a hot topic for the last four weeks. Many of you already have it on your devices in the form of an official update or unofficial port. It brought a lot of improvements, but also made few previous features unavailable. One of these was the ability for non-system applications to access battery statistics.

Previously, external applications were able to access battery statistics to show how much our applications and games affected battery life. Luckily, XDA Forum Member gsamtan wrote an Xposed module to restore this ability in aftermarket battery monitors.

According to the author, this module uses the Xposed framework to provide an alternate implementation of the com.android.server.am.BatteryStatsService.getStatistics() method, which doesn’t enforce that the calling application has the BATTERY_STATS permission. It sounds a bit tricky, but the installation process is very simple. Naturally, this requires both root access and for Xposed Framework to be installed. The module is safe and won’t do any harm to your device. And with it, you will be able to control your applications the old fashioned way.

If your favorite battery stats app stopped working after updating to KitKat, head over to the module thread and learn how to bring the functionality back.

Give Your Battery Some Extra Life with OnePowerGuard Pro

android_batt

Since the beginning of Android, hardware changes have been easy to notice. Quad- and octa-core devices are nothing unusual now, and RAM and storage capacities make phones as powerful as some traditional PCs in certain respects. Unfortunately, they all have one major weakness: battery life. Even the biggest batteries still last a day or two of intensive use on phones and maybe few days on tablets.

Aftermarket kernel improvements can save a bit more of battery, which is a good beginning. Luckily, XDA Senior Member onexuan wrote an application to optimize battery usage in many ways. OnePowerGuard Pro gives users a chance to conserve the battery in six predefined modes, which turn on or off selected services depending on day time, usage, or other personal preferences.

Onexuan states that his application tweaks the phone on kernel-level and optimizes many of factors that can cause battery drain for an overall reduction of 70-80%. Naturally, the app requires your phone or tablet to be rooted. It’s easy to say that something does wonders, but the best way to verify it is trying.

If your battery seems to let you down, you may want to give OnePowerGuard Pro a shot by visiting the application thread for additional details.

Gigaset gets into Android tablets with two models, including a Tegra 4 flagship

Gigaset QV830 and QV1030 tablets

You likely won't know Germany's Gigaset unless you've bought one of its cordless phones, but you may want to take notice now that the company is launching its first tablets. Both the 8-inch QV830 and 10-inch QV1030 have relatively upscale aluminum shells and run stock Android 4.2, all the while targeting very different audiences. The QV1030 is the high-speed flagship with a 1.8GHz quad-core Tegra 4 processor, a 2,560 x 1,600 display, 16GB of expandable storage and both 8-megapixel rear as well as 1.2-megapixel front cameras. The QV830 aims at a more frugal crowd with its 1.2GHz quad-core MediaTek chip, 1,024 x 768 screen, 8GB of expandable storage, 5-megapixel rear camera and 1.2-megapixel front shooter. Both slates should reach Germany in early December, starting at €199 ($271) for the QV830 and jumping to €369 ($502) for the QV1030. There's no word of an American launch, although we're not counting on it when Gigaset doesn't have much of a footprint in the US.

Gionee Elife E7 boasts most sensitive 16MP camera, 2.5GHz Snapdragon 800

Gionee isn't exactly a name that you'd come across in the Western market every day, but this time, the Chinese company has big global ambitions. The latest proof is its Elife E7, a 5.5-inch 1080p Android phone that boasts two titles: it's the first known phone featuring the 2.5GHz flavor of Qualcomm's Snapdragon 800 chip (MSM8974AC); plus it has the most sensitive 16-megapixel camera, courtesy of its Largan M8 lens (though the aperture is still unknown) and 1/2.3-inch sensor with large 1.34µm pixels. Compared to the competition, Gionee believes this particular OmniVision sensor has the best balance between resolution and pixel size, and the phone maker even went as far as claiming this already beats the 1.12µm, 16-megapixel counterpart on the yet-to-be-announced Galaxy S 5. Of course, we'll believe it when we get to properly test the E7's camera ourselves.

Virgin Media brings its TV Anywhere service to UK Android devices

It took a while, but Virgin Media has finally brought its TV Anywhere service to Android. Already available on the iPhone and iPad for more than a year, the free app comes to Android smartphones and tablets with nine new UK TV channels including Alibi, Dave, Drama, Good Food, Home, Really, Watch, Yesterday and CBS Reality. That takes the total number of mobile channels up to 67, with up to 90 available online. Virgin Media boasts it now offers more choice than rival service Sky Go, but like it's competitor, some might be frustrated by the patchy support for Android devices. Although you'll find support for Samsung's Galaxy S4 and Galaxy Note, HTC One, Sony Xperia Tablet Z and Google's Nexus tablets, you might experience issues if your device is running Android 4.4 KitKat. However, that shouldn't stop you connecting the app to your TiVo box to manage your recordings and plan your future viewing. While you won't be able to install it on your Nexus 5 just yet, Virgin says more Android devices will join the line-up "in the very near future."

Dual-SIM HTC One with expandable storage comes to the UK

Just days after it unveiled a second gold One, HTC is releasing another variant of its Android flagship in an attempt to boost sales in the UK. Today, the company announced the availability of the HTC One Dual SIM, which you may already know as HTC One 802w. Just like it's Chinese counterpart, the device comes with a removable back for access to dual SIM slots and, more importantly, a microSD slot. That means you can switch between SIMs to receive calls and also fall back on up to 64GB of external storage, should you max-out the One's 32GB of internal storage. The dual-SIM functionality does come at a price, however, as the latest One variant does not support LTE -- otherwise the specs remain unchanged. If you can overlook that, the One Dual SIM is up for pre-order on HTC's official store for £495 ($809), with it likely to head to a "number of networks and retailers" in the near future.

KitKat arrives on Nexus One via feeble custom ROM

If you're still rocking a Nexus One, but are jealous of all the new devices running KitKat, you're in luck. The folks on the XDA Developer's forums have hacked together a custom Android 4.4 ROM for the three year-old device. Unsurprisingly, the patched-up build has some issues; namely, it's susceptible to a known bootloop error and lacks screenshot functionality. The camera doesn't work quite right either, but hey -- it's KitKat! On your Nexus One! In your face, Ice Cream Sandwich!

MLB releases Franchise MVP for Android, lets you live your baseball fantasies

The World Series is over, and it's a long three months before Spring Training begins. What's a baseball fan to do until then? Well, if you're an Android user, you could pick up Franchise MVP, a new game released by none other than Major League Baseball. MLB's no stranger to apps, of course, with its popular At Bat programs for iOS and Android, but mobile gaming is relatively new territory. Franchise MVP isn't like MLB 2K13 though; instead of creating a team, you follow an individual player through his career in the majors. You can play any position on the field and for any MLB team, building skills like batting, pitching and fielding along the way and making key in-field decisions. The game is free to download, but if you want to hurry things along, you can choose to spend real money for in-game currency. So if your favorite team missed out on taking home the Commissioner's Trophy this year, you can at least console yourself by using Franchise MVP to become the baseball player of your dreams.

CyanogenMod Installer pulled from Google Play, lives on via sideloading

The CyanogenMod team made switching from your phone's original Android setup to its own flavor of the OS much easier with paired mobile and desktop installer apps, but now there's one extra step. In a blog post, CyanogenMod states the Google Play Support team contacted it and claims the installer app is in violation of their TOS. This, despite CyanogenMod's insistence that the app's only purpose is to enable ADB on the device, then guide users through connecting it to the desktop app. Despite "hundreds of thousands" of installs for its alternative Android experience, the mobile app is still usable via sideloading, and its installation guide walks users through the necessary steps. Going forward, the CyanogenMod team is submitting its app to Samsung and Amazon's alternative app stores, but interested Android users can download it right now.

Google Play Store now highlights Chromecast-friendly Android apps

Chromecast section in Google Play

Google has lately taken to highlighting tablet-native Android apps; it only makes sense that the company would devote the same kind of love to Chromecast owners. Accordingly, the search firm has just posted a Chromecast section in Google Play for those browsing from their Android devices. The selection is thin at the moment -- you'll find only Google's media apps, HBO Go, Hulu Plus, Netflix and Pandora. Still, the section should be a handy one-stop shop for anyone eager to stream video on their TV.

Google's setup app makes bulk Play for Education tablet activations a breeze

Google is looking to make the task for schools looking to cash in on Google Play for Education a bit easier with a bit of mobile software. The Google Edu Device Setup app (for Android, natch) allows administrators with a proper account to activate tablets purchased through school-themed store in bulk. Once the app is downloaded from the regular Play Store and the slates are activated, age appropriate settings -- like disabling location sharing -- can be configured and when complete, only the Education Store can be accessed. As you might expect, this tool only works with Nexus tablets procured through the proper scholastic portion of Google's online shop.

YouTube app teardown hints at ad-free Music Pass service with offline playback

YouTube logo

Rumors of a YouTube-based music service just got some credibility thanks to an Android Police teardown of the Android app's most recent code. The site has found references to a Music Pass that would let subscribers listen to "millions of songs" ad-free, even with the app running in the background. Customers could also pin content to the device for offline listening, although it would expire if the device stayed offline for too long. There's no guarantee that Google will launch the Music Pass soon (if at all), but don't be surprised if the YouTube app becomes your personal jukebox in the near future.

The $299 Blu Life Pro is aimed at the selfie set with a 5-megapixel front cam

LIFE PRO by BLU. (PRNewsFoto/BLU Products)

When we first spotted the decently spec'd Blu Life series, it seemed like a nice Android handset option for folks on a budget. However, the times they have a-changed, and the former KIRF company's latest device, the Blu Life Pro, is now looking decidedly less cheap. Spec-wise, it's packing a 720P screen, quad-core 1.5GHz MediaTek CPU, Android 4.2, HSPA+ 3G, 1GB RAM, 16GB of memory and a 12-megapixel BSI camera with 1080p video. At $299, it'll have to go up against plenty of similarly-priced and technologically superior rivals, but the one feature that distinguishes the Blu from the rest is its 5-megapixel, 1080p front-facing camera with a BSI sensor. Nevertheless, given the option between this and a much cheaper 720p phone like the spiffy Moto G, our vanity probably does know some bounds.
