Enable your messaging app for Android Auto

Posted by Joshua Gordon, Developer Advocate

What if there was a way for drivers to stay connected using your messaging app, while keeping their hands on the wheel and eyes on the road?

Android Auto helps drivers stay connected, but in a more convenient way that's integrated with the car. It eliminates the need to type and read messages by replacing these activities with a voice controlled interface.

Enabling your messaging app to work with Android Auto is easy. Developers like Skype and textPlus have already done so. Check out this DevByte for an overview of the messaging APIs, and see the developer training guide for a deep dive. Read on for a look at the key steps involved.

Message notifications on the car’s display

When an Android 5.0+ phone is connected to a compatible car, users receive incoming message notifications from Auto-enabled apps on the car’s head unit display. Your app runs on the phone, but is controlled by the car. To learn more about how this works, watch the Introduction to Android Auto DevByte.

A new message notification from Skype

If your app already uses notifications to alert the user to incoming messages, it’ll be easy to extend these for Auto. It takes just a few lines of code, and you won’t have to change how your app works on the phone.

There are a couple small differences between message notifications on Auto vs. a phone. On Auto, a preview of the message content isn’t shown, because messaging is driven entirely by voice. Second, message notifications are backed by a conversation object. This is simply a collection of unread messages from a particular sender.

Decorate your notification with the CarExtender to add support for the car. Next, use the UnreadConversation.Builder to create a conversation, and populate it by iterating over your app's unread messages (from a certain sender) and adding them to the conversation. Pass your conversation object to the CarExtender, and you’re done!

Tap to hear messages

Tapping on a message notification plays it back on the car's sound system, via text to speech. This is handled automatically by the framework; no additional code is required. Pretty cool, right?

In order to know when the user hears a message, you provide a PendingIntent that’s triggered by the system. That’s one of just two intents you’ll need to handle to enable your app for Auto.

Reply by voice

Voice control is the real magic of Android Auto. Users reply to messages by speaking, via voice recognition. This is far faster and more natural than typing.

Enabling this functionality is as simple as adding a RemoteInput instance to your conversation objects, before you issue the notification. Speech recognition is handled entirely by the framework. The recognition result is delivered to your app as a plain text string via a second PendingIntent.

Replying to a message from textPlus by voice.

Next Steps

Make your messaging app more natural to use in the car by enabling it for Android Auto. Now drivers can stay connected, without typing or reading messages. It just takes a few lines of code. To learn more visit http://ift.tt/1l0sim4

Create your own avatar and virtual world retro-style in Habbo

If you're bored with your current life, one of the ways to make it more exciting would be playing in a virtual world, where you can be anyone you want and do anything (well, almost anything) you want, without leaving the comfort of your chair. There are a lot of RPG worlds out there, but if you're looking for something retro and pixel, Habbo for Android is now ready to be explored and invaded by your imagination.

Habbo is a virtual world where you can create your own avatar and customize it the way you want to be seen in this digital universe. You can choose various physical attributes, dress him/her/it up, and get accessories for your character as well. You can also create and customize various rooms and invite new pixel-art friends to interact with your very own retro avatar. You can also go out and visit millions of other rooms and spaces created by other players from all over the world. To also strengthen your "position" in this world, you can even join other community groups like armies and mafias.

In order to earn money in Haboo, you can collect items, trade it with other players and even run a business using a trading pass. There are also various events in the world, like quizzes, quests, games, where you can compete in and win points and items.

You can download Habbo for free from the Google Play Store. There are also in-app purchases available and the game requires you to have Internet connectivity to be able to play it.

LG G4’s official invite confirms (kinda) leather-backed device

After weeks of speculation, LG finally officially confirmed their upcoming new flagship as the LG G4 (maybe the last of its kind?) when they released the official teaser video yesterday. Now they've sent out the "formal invite" for the launch later this month, and it looks like it's all about leather and possibly confirming rumors of a leather-backed smartphone. And since they once again avoided competing with announcements of other OEM flagships during the Mobile World Congress, they have now caught the attention of the digital world.

It is still three weeks away, but expect interest and speculation to ramp up soon, as it is expected that the LG G4 will be the last one in the G series and may even turn out to be "radically different" than all the previous flagships. How different it will be though, remains to be seen. But just based on the event invite, it looks like leather of some sorts will be involved. It may just be one of the options if you decide to build your device through the Moto Maker (although leather has always been an option there). Or it may be that it is just a leather case. Or, as some of us are hoping, it may mean that it will be the backing material, out of the box.

Aside from the leather part, the invite also explicitly shows that the camera will have a f/1.8 main camera, which was also included in the teaser video, as well as laser-assisted auto-focus. This means that better low-light picture taking is one of the draws of this phone as well, although a lot of other new flagships also boast of this capability.

As for the other specs, LG has not released an official sheet yet, but based on the sightings on the GFXBench, we have an idea of what it will entail. Let's wait a few more weeks to see once again if all the leaks and speculations were spot on.
