CMApps update detects what version of Android you use

We have talked about CMApps before; this is the app that allows you to run CyanogenMod apps on your device without having to root your smartphone. This is a great way for you to try out some of the apps that come on CyanogenMod without having to void your warranty. The app has been updated with some new features and one of them is a big deal.

The most important update to come in the new app version is an automatic Android version detection system. This detection system automatically chooses which apk needs to be downloaded based on what version of Android you are running.

That change makes CMApps compatible with Android 4.2 and higher. Other minor changes in the update include a changelog popup and a popup that installers see on the first run of the app. CMApps provides links to apps called Apollo, Camera Next, Camera, Clock Widget, DSP manager, File manager, Sound Recorder, Calculator, Torch, Trebuchet, and wall papers.

The update landed February 1 and is 2.7MB in size. It has between 1000 and 5000 installs and is currently on version 3.0. You can download the updated app right now on Google Play.

Build your own fleet of cities in Maritime Kingdom

What do you look for in a city-building game? Great-looking graphics? Challenging tasks and gameplay? Adventurous storyline? A new game of this ilk is out to convince you to start building ships and go to the four corners of the globe and develop your kingdom, until you become a power to reckon with. Do you have what it takes (and do you have time?) to build your Maritime Kingdom?

From the same developers that brought you Tribez and Castlez (thank goodness they didn't name this Kingdomz), this new city-building game brings you on a maritime adventure as you build a powerful shipping fleet, trade in various ports, establish diplomatic relations with countries that you pass by, and discover unchartered territories. The game has over 350 quests wherein you'll be able to create cities using 40 different building types.

To earn money (well, the virtual kind, at least), you can gather and trade over 30 kinds of resources, including various gems and fancy cloths, spices, etc. The game does not seem simple on paper, and in reality is pretty complex, including the achievements system that you need to master. But for mobile players who are into this kinds of games.

Unlike some city-building games that require you to always have Internet connection when playing them, Maritime Kingdom can be played offline so you can play it literally anywhere. You can download it for free from the Google Play Store but there are in-app purchases available. For games like this, buying stuff will always be a temptation, so watch out.

Evolve your powers with Hunters Quest companion game for Android

One of the much buzzed-about games that came out of E3 last year was Evolve, a monster vs hunters multiplayer game that will be coming soon to a game console (PS4, Windows, Xbox One) near you this February. But in the meantime, a companion game available on mobile platforms will help you get ready for your new adventure, and it will even help you build and train your hunters when they will eventually arrive for full gameplay.

Evolve: Hunters Quest is not that complicated, to be honest. It's like your typical match-3 game where you need to create and clear matching lines of three or more similar characters or items by swiping them around. By doing this, you "unleash devastating attacks" on the monsters as well as get points for your hunters, particularly when you get combos of cascading matches.

But what makes this game different from other match-3 games is that some of the boosts and points you get here can actually be applied to the main console game. You get Mastery Boosts the more you play Hunters Quest, and this will result in giving your hunters extra boosts as well once you start playing the main game. The companion game itself has over 100 missions that you can finish. You can even collect the new wildlife and monsters that you encounter and put them in a Bestiary.

You would need to be connected to the Internet and have a my2k account, as well as a supported copy of Evolve to use the full functionality of the game. You can download Evolve: Hunters Quest for free from the Google Play Store.

Hearthstone ‘workaround’ for non-tablet Android devices

Fans of the popular World of Warcraft-themed trading card game Hearthstone from Blizzard can actually be some sort of glad about this piece of news -- there’s now a workaround that will enable you to install and play the game, which is officially restricted to Android tablets only, right onto your smartphone. And the really good news about it? The workaround actually works.

Marketed as “Deceptively simple, insanely fun” by recognized developer Blizzard, Hearthstone is a card game features characters and heroes from the well-known Warcraft universe, which means humans, elves, orcs, and probably a sprinkling of demons and other nefarious creatures, in card form. The game enables you to cast spells, summon creatures, and sling bolts of fury on your way to defeating your opponent’s card collection. The game can be quite addictive because it allows you to play on your own, although the real fun begins when you play against other players.

Up until now, Hearthstone can only be played on devices with screens of six inches or more -- ergo, tablets. The workaround allows you to run the app on your smartphone, opening up more opportunities for you to access the game regardless of the device you’re working with. With a Battle.net account, it’s even easier to switch devices, whether it’s your tablet, desktop PC, or now, with your smartphone.

You don’t have to worry yourself to death asking "Is this legal?", as the app itself is free. The workaround also doesn’t give you insane unfair advantages like booster packs that give you the most powerful cards, or any free stuff whatsoever. It’s just that — a way for you to play Hearthstone on your Android smartphone. Be reminded also that any tinkering with your smartphone’s innards can turn your device into a worthless piece of glass, plastic, and metal, so be sure to back everything up. To discover for yourself the magic of having Hearthstone in your smartphone, check the source link below and be sure to leave a proper thank you to the wizards who made this experience possible.

PPSSPP 1.0: You guessed it, a PSP emulator on Android

We’ve been wondering why there was no legit project out there for an emulator to enable playing PSP (classic) games on Android devices, given that hardware specs for Android devices are on the up. But it seems our wondering days are over. Welcome PPSSPP 1.0, from the same emulator team that brought you Dolphin for PC, a Nintendo Wii emulator.

As of this moment, we’re happy to say that PPSSPP is a fully working Playstation Portable emulator – in other words, it will let you play PSP games on your Android device. That said, the development project for this emulator is pretty young, so we should expect there to be a few bugs that users will find here and there. But to be able to say that the emulator is ready to play certain games at full speed at this point is something to get real excited about. Did we mention that the app has a pretty slick UI for you to navigate through stuff?

In terms of features, there only a few available given the early stages of the appp’s development. It is missing a few things that we like in emulators, like mapping of hardware keys and support for PSP eboot files. But if you have PSP ISO files, those do work.

This is the interesting part – the developers have made the app such that it is able to run on most Android devices, not just high-end ones – with the only caveat that your device supports OpenGL ES 2.0 (which most do). Of course, slap it on a DROID Turbo and you will get the best performance at this point. You can download it free as an ad-supported app for Android 2.3 or higher, or get the "gold" version which removes the advertising for USD$5.99.
