HTC tests users’ patience, Lollipop rollout for One M7, M8 delayed

Now that you’ve read the headline above, take a few deep breaths first -- breathe in, breathe deeply, then breathe out. If you're an HTC One M7 or One M8 user, this news will be sure to cause some irritation at the very least, so make sure you’re feeling somewhat relaxed before proceeding. We know that HTC One users have been looking forward to getting their hands on the Android 5.0 Lollipop updates to their devices. This latest update means more bad news for you guys.

You read that headline right: Taiwanese smartphone maker HTC recently announced they will not be able to meet the self-imposed 90-day deadline for rolling out their promised Lollipop updates for the HTC One M7 and One M8 handsets. The company, through vice president for product management Mo Versi, acknowledged that they had encountered “several issues” despite “great progress,” and that they are currently working to sort out the kinks in the update before releasing it to HTC’s customers.

Back in November, HTC had promised to release an update for the M7 and M8 smartphones to enable them to move up to Android 5.0 Lollipop, but due to some issues—apparently from Google’s end of the project—Versi was forced to acknowledge that the company would not be able to meet the February 1 deadline. “We are continuing to push hard to deliver Lollipop to all devices as near the 90-day mark as possible, but we are taking every precaution to ensure the rollout is right and we aren’t willing to compromise at your expense,” he explained.

The delay though, applies only to—brace for it—smartphones locked to US carriers. Likewise, HTC has also announced that it has released the update to the Google Play Edition, the Unlocked, and the Developer Editions of the M8. So if your HTC One M7 or One M8 handset is not one of the three variants mentioned above, you might have to wait a bit longer. After all, they say patience is a virtue. Doesn't mean we all have to like the situation, though.

Kraftwerk fuel cell charger liberates you from the power grid

Solutions for our battery problems with our smartphones, tablets, and other gadgets continue to pour in as we struggle with always being mobile and fully charged. But charging battery extenders and power banks can also become a challenge, especially if they run out of juice while you're still on the go. A new Kickstarter project says it can liberate you from the power grid because this energy supply relies on fuel cell technology.

Kraftwerk calls itself your "very own portable power plant" and the best part is you don't have to lug something heavy around because it is small but highly efficient. Instead of constantly plugging it in a power outlet to give it the ability to charge your mobile gadgets, all you need to do is fill it up just as you would a car. You can use standard camping gas or lighter gas, which you can probably get at convenience stores. A fully fueled kraftwerk can last up to weeks and can give your device multiple charges.

You can connect it to your smartphone, tablet, or even your GoPro, using the standard USB connector. It can also withstand all weather conditions, which makes it ideal for camping, mountain trekking, and other outdoor activities where you won't be able to plug in. It can also be considered more environmentally friendly than the other power banks since it uses optimum energy efficiency.

The Kickstarter project has more than reached its goal of raising $500,000 (it's currently at almost $890,000) with 32 days to go before it officially closes. They are targetting the end of this year to be able to deliver this device to the early bird backers (all the slots are gone). But if you pledge $99 or more now, you'll be able to receive your kraftwerk by February next year. That's a long wait ahead of you, but it will probably be worth the wait.

Pandora gets a facelift, experience now more personal

Pandora has just gotten a facelift for both Android and iOS users. The app is said to be simpler to use with design principles such as simplicity and clarity being followed by its developers. Pandora continues to let you discover new music and explore more music by your favorite artists, and even personalize listening experience more easily. This update makes the app more personal with the new design interface.

Remember that Pandora's UI was redesigned only last December but the development team was quick to make some more changes. With this new design, it's not easier to shape a radio station. There's also a new Personalization icon that lets you view your favorite stations' Thumb History.

If you thumbed a song up or down accidentally, you can "un-thumb" it by re-tapping the Thumb Icon. To make controlling music possible even when you are exploring the app, there's a new Mini-Player included. And to be updated with what's new in the music scene, redesigned Notification & Activity Feed will display the information you need.

Continue to use the Pandora Radio app as a great music discovery tool by searching for songs, genres, or artists. You can create a playlist of your all-time favorite songs so you can listen anytime, anywhere. A free account will allow you to create a maximum of 100 personalized radio stations.

WhatsApp voice calling now available for selected Android users

With free messaging services continuously evolving into bringing features more than just texts and emoticons and stickers, it was only a matter of time before they all started trying to one-up each other in terms of services offered. One of the more popular apps is WhatsApp, and its users are eagerly awaiting the free voice calls they knew would eventually arrive. A Reddit user has posted saying it's finally here, although they are probably testing it out on selected users and regions for now.

"Pradnesh07" shared some screenshots and a video, showing that the voice calling feature for the app is indeed working. However, it was activated when someone who already has the feature, called him, kind of like an invite system, except that the call itself is the invite. You also have to update your app to the new build (2.11.508) but this isn't available at the Google Play Store yet so you need to download the .apk file and side-load it onto your Android smartphone.

The updated app, based on the reddit user's screenshots seems to be divided into three tabs: calls, chats, and contacts. The call feature has several options like speakerphone, mute, and the ability to send instant messages even while you're on the call. According to Pradnesh07, the person who called him said that the voice calling feature works on all Android phones, not just those running on 5.0 and up, and it's also available not just in India (although they are both from that country).

WhatsApp has not officially announced this new feature yet, so if you do not fancy waiting for someone to call you to be able to start using the voice call feature, you can wait just a little bit more. But the developers better hurry because rivals like Viber, WeChat, Line, etc, are already way ahead of the game.
