Classic arcade game Q*bert now rebooted for Android

Arcade game nostalgia has been on an all-time high when a few months ago, some websites published beloved classic games that you could play on your desktop browser. Then some developers updated several retro games for mobile use as well. Another one of those best-selling and popular game from the 80s is making its way to your Android devices, and while it's the game that you're familiar with, it also comes with a reboot.

Q*bert was named one of the top 3 most successful arcade games of all time (together with Pac-Man and Donkey Kong). The 2015 version is still in its 2D pixel format but now it has "state of the art 3D game-play and graphics" in keeping with the feel of playing the game on mobile devices. It is also optimized for Android TV with gamepad controls, if you feel like playing it on a bigger screen.

If you've forgotten what Q*bert is about, the titular character jumps on an isometric cube pyramid to convert the color of each block. But now instead of the old squares, you now have hexagonal blocks. But the old adversaries are still there, trying to prevent our hero from fulfilling his mission. There's Coily, Ugg, Slick, Sam, Wrong Way, and Red Ball, and now they have 3 more joining them to foil Q*bert: Homer, Uppercut, and Treasure Chest.

If there are new enemies, you also have new heroes. There are now 7 new playable characters, all from the Q* family: Q*zard, Q*bertha, Q*bot, Q*zilla, Q*tee, Q*knight and Q*nicorn. You can buy the game from the Google Play Store for only $1.99 (no in-app purchases available). If you're a classic arcade game fan, then that should be well worth it.

SWApp Launcher Wear allows you to launch apps on your smartwatch

Having fun with your wearable yet? Not many Android phone users already have a compatible smartwatch. The swartwatch era has just started but it certainly has the potential to become bigger. There's still so much to improve on the small interface and functionality but one thing we're certain about: the smartwatch is very useful. Instead of bringing your bulky phone if you're going for a quick run or walk around the neighborhood, you can just wear a smartwatch and receive notifications for the important items you need--SMS, calls, and more. And since launcher apps on Android are becoming more popular, launcher apps for Android Wear also make sense.

With the SWApp Launcher, you can launch apps right on your watch or remotely launch apps on your phone. You can also keep Screen On always so screen will remain on. On the phone, feel free to toggle Wifi on/off, Wifi Hotspot on/off, Silent/Normal/Vibrate, and set FindMyPhone.

On your smartwatch, you can view three panels of shortcuts. Use the SWApp Launcher Wear app and swipe right or left to change the page. Use the app to set shortcuts on your watch. And to quickly access the SWApp Launcher , just swipe the screen from the border. If you want to add shortcuts, wait for some time after you first install the app. Make sure the cloud icon is "full" before using the features.

Journal with Narrate update: Material Design, new sharing features

Journaling isn't just the property of famous people, high school students who are forced to do so as homework, or lonely people who cannot keep their emotions in check. It has become a tool for self-improvement, a creative outlet for some, or just a way for people to talk about things without having to post them on social media for all the world to see. And while writing on an actual journal is still the way to go for some, apps have also invaded this world as well.

One such app is Journal with Narrate and their latest update has brought a design overhaul (take a wild guess what brought that about) as well as several new features that will help you share not just with yourself but with the world (if that is what you want to do). The redesign is of course courtesy of the Material Design guidelines that Google has strongly suggested for Android apps. But more than just being prettified, the journalling app has added some nifty features, like adding new filtering and sorting capabilities to make it easier you to look for past journal entries.

You now also have the power to share specific journal entries with other apps on your device. If you also feel like sharing your thoughts or pictures to the world, you can do so also by using Narrate. And if you're in a hurry to add something to your journal, there is now a quick entry widget that you can put on your smartphone or tablet's home screen. The change log also mentions a tasker integration, but then says documentation will be coming soon.

You can download Journal with Narrate for free from the Google Play Store. There are also in-app purchases available, including upgrading to Narrate Pro. This will give you the ability to sync your entries to cloud services like Dropbox, Google Drive, etc, plus some other additional features not available on the free version.

Ultrasecure Blackphone Had Security Vulnerability

20150128203731359

What was touted to be an impenetrable monolithic staple in Android security has just had a vulnerability in its IM purged, one that could allow attackers to breach in and decrypt information, steal contacts and even control vital device functions. Guess it wasn’t such a safe phone after all.

Ideum Duet smart table now running both Android and Windows 8

No wonder it’s named the Duet. Smart table-maker Ideum has rolled out a new genius of a living room showpiece, and the really cool thing about it is that the new Duet multi-touch coffee table runs on both Android and Windows 8. Yes, you heard that right -- it's a coffee table, aaaand it's also a table-top computer that runs Microsoft's latest OS plus Android on a separate system. Pretty nifty.

The Ideum Duet is envisioned as a hub enabling you to control various home devices via Bluetooth and WiFi. As of the moment, the Duet seamlessly combines Android 4.4 KitKat and Windows 8 so you can do more even when you’re lounging on the living room sofa. Each OS is run by two independent computer systems, blended together by an Intel Edison mini-computer to allow problem-free switching between platforms. A 2.0GHz Rockchip RK3288 and 2GB RAM plus 16GB on-board storage handles the Android side, while different components power the Windows aspect of the Duet, depending on the actual size of the table. The 42-inch table sports a 3.2 GHz Intel Core i5-4570R processor with integrated Iris Pro Graphics 5200, 8GB RAM and 256 GB SSD storage. Meanwhile, the 46-inch model runs on 3.5 GHz Intel Core i7-4710HQ chip, with dedicated Nvidia GeForce GTX 760 graphics card, 16 GB memory, and 512 GB SSD storage, offering significantly more power.

Ah, but don’t forget, the Duet is a coffee table, albeit one that you can play games on, read the news, update your Facebook status, or control the thermostat with. You need not fear breaking it as the display is chemically strengthened and even has an anti-glare coating. It can detect up to 60 simultaneous touch points when running Windows, and up to 12 if you’re using Android. As for the table itself, it is built from a combination of aircraft-grade aluminum and cold-rolled steel. The 46-inch variant carries IP54 water resistance so you don’t need to worry about spilling coffee on the Duet (but why would you do that, duh).

Ideum would want you to have a Duet coffee table in your home, but it’s also perfect for museums, schools, and office settings. Shipping will start this February; just be ready to shell out at least USD$7,950 for this perfect living room showpiece.
