Smash blocks with an armadillo in Blockadillo game for Android

Armadillos may look scary (or at least to those who are afraid of mammals with shells) but mostly they're innocuous and are often victims of road accidents because they're jittery and nervous when startled. So basically, they're pretty harmless. But the armadillos in this new Android game are anything but (actually, they hardly look like armadillos) and have one purpose only: to destroy the blocks around them and get you as many points as they can.

Blockadillo is an arcade game where you use the colorful armadillos to smash through the numerous blocks that are surrounding them. Sounds pretty easy right? Well, yes, until you realize that you can only control them by steering left and right but they have a mind of their own when it comes to going up and down. Then it becomes challenging to get them to do what you want. Add to that the fact that the blocks themselves have different abilities and challenges to present to you and your bouncing armadillo.

The game's setting seems to be in the remains of an ancient culture. You need to solve the puzzles on each level, get out of the deadly traps set for you, collect golden idols, activate ancient machines and basically earn as many points as you can, all while trying to control the armadillos that will get you all that.

The first world of Blockadillo, which you can download for free from the Google Play Store, has 40 levels for you to conquer. The game also has a second level, also with 40 levels, but this time you got to shell out a single in-app purchase to be able to play.

Goat Simulator madness continues, new city map added

Goat simulation technology rules! Ah yes, the Goat Simulator which we featured last September has just been updated. Don't be surprised if this game is still available because there are people who still fantasize about being a goat. With this app, your goat dreams can finally come true but for a price. From $4.99, Goat Simulator is now down to $2.99. I'm pretty sure more goat fans will grab this offer and start causing destruction in a world where goat rules.

The updated Goat Simulator is still the same app that allows you to be a goat. It's like a skater game but main character is this goat who wrecks stuff everywhere. Destroying stuff will gain you points. Try and be the alpha goat among your friends as you try to defeat the millions of bugs on screen.

Goat Simulator can be played on Android TV but a compatible gamepad is needed. Its developer Coffee Stain Studios updated the app and fixed some issues with Japanese and Russian localization and added a whole new map called City Goats Bay. Some devices would get a black screen but that's fixed already. Also added were new goats, a lickable helicopter, hyper realistic water physics, and pigs that can get stuck somewhere to make the game more exciting than ever.

WhatsApp now available on desktop but only on Chrome (for now)

There are times that some intense conversations are better had with you typing away on your desktop keyboard rather than swiping away on your virtual one. Or there are also times when you can't use your mobile phone but need to keep a conversation going. If you have a WhatsApp account and Google Chrome on your desktop, that's now possible as the messaging service is now available on the Web.

But the desktop/web version will only work on the Chrome browser and also for devices that are not iOS. When you go into your WhatsApp app on your Android, Windows Phone, or even Blackberry, you will see a "WhatsApp Web" screen. All you need to do is scan the QR code on the web portal of WhatsApp, and if you're on Chrome, then it should start working already.

Once you've already linked to your WhatsApp account, you can start chatting away with your friends and loved ones. But make sure that your mobile phone is connected to the Internet during the whole session, or it will not work. If you suddenly turn it off or accidentally switch to airplane mode, then the session on your web browser will end. Since it's still early days for the web version, expect some kinks and bugs to come up.

whatsappweb-730x264

There's no word yet on whether they will eventually be expanding this to other web browsers or to iOS, due to some platform limitations from Apple. So for now, Android mobile phones (and Windows and Blackberry too) should enjoy having WhatsApp on the web, even if you have to download Chrome for it.

Never run out of space with IDrive 1TB Hard Drive, 10TB Cloud Bundle [DEALS]

If you've always been a worrywart when it came to your smartphone's remaining free space, even with, say, a 128 GB microSD card, then do we have the deal for you. With this latest Android Community Deal, you don't get one but two sweet storage solutions courtesy of IDrive. Not only do you get a 1 TB wireless hard drive to keep your files close to you when you need it, you also get a year's worth of 10 TB cloud storage for even more space when you need it.

The IDrive Wi-Fi Wireless 1TB Hard Drive is a storage and backup solution for those who need more than what any microSD or internal storage can offer but without being chained to cables. That said, a USB 3.0 port is also available for even more speed if you need it. With wireless transfers, you can avail of cloud-like storage but without going through slow and congested Internet pipes. And since the data on the drive is encrypted using 256-bit AES encryption, you can rest assured that your data is safe even in the case of loss or theft.

To complement this physical hard drive, IDrive also has 10 TB of cloud storage up for grabs. Pretty much like having your own Dropbox or Google Drive space, with you in total control of your data. With the same 256-bit AES encryption, your data remains safe from prying eyes. The service also offers automatic Facebook and Instagram backup.

You get both of these storage options for only $97 instead of the regular $475, a rather good 75 percent discount. Of course, both work not just with Android but with a wide array of devices and operating systems. Do note that the 10 TB Cloud Pro Personal subscription is only good for one year. The second year will be offered at a discounted price of $59, but after that regular rates apply.

Facebook Lite now available for low-end Android devices [apk download]

A new version of the Facebook app has turned up on Google Play and it is aimed directly at users who want something that uses less data and runs smoothly on low-end devices. The Facebook app can use a lot of data and that is a problem for people on limited plans. Sometimes the app can also be sluggish on devices that are on the low end of the power scale with limited performance.

Facebook Lite is designed to work well in all network conditions. In fact, the app was designed to operate on 2G networks and in areas with limited network connectivity. The app is also very small at under 1MB making it quick to download.

The small app is also fast loading and designed to be efficient with data so it consumes less of the user's data allotment. The app launched in a few locations to begin where networks aren’t as robust as they are in many developed nations.

The app launched in Bangladesh, Nepal, Nigeria, South Africa, Sudan, Sri Lanka, Vietnam, and Zimbabwe to start. The app is on Google Play at this link right now but might not be available for everyone (direct apk download link below).

HTC leaks turn into a flood: One M9, One M9 Plus [UPDATE]

Although LG has said it won't be trying to steal the spotlight this coming MWC 2015, Samsung isn't going to get away scot-free. HTC seems to have quite a lineup prepared for the annual event and details about those smartphones are starting to inundate the Internet. We're seeing a couple of leaked photos of the HTC Hima, a.k.a. the One M9, with some rather unfortunate surprises. But wait, there's a plus, quite literally. We're now hearing word of an HTC Hima_Ultra, the One M9 Plus, that might have those features that the One M9 itself might not have.

In terms of outward appearance, the HTC One M9 might fail to amaze as it is practically the same design as the M8 and M7 before it, give or take a few adjustments. It is the insides where everything counts, but even here it seems that HTC has taken a page from Sony's "incremental upgrades" book. The list of hardware specs includes:

• 5-inch 1080p display

• 3GB RAM

• Snapdragon 810 CPU, Adreno 430 GPU

• 20.7 Megapixel rear camera

• UltraPixel 4MP front-facing camera

• 2840 mAh battery

• Android 5.0, Sense 7.0

Which sounds on par with what you'd expect in a 2015 flagship. A few interesting points can be taken from it though. First is that HTC isn't jumping on the 2K resolution bandwagon just yet, with the same 5-inch 1080p display as before, and some might agree with that decision. The rear camera is also not its usual UltraPixel flair but is still a powerful 20.7 megapixel CMOS most likely from Sony. The front-camera, however, is indeed an UltraPixel one, at least based on these leaked specs. Sadly, based on a set of photos courtesy of Phandroid, it seems that the One M9 won't have the DuoCamera setup that the OEM has popularized.

htcOneM9Version2-600x346

That's not to say HTC is giving up on that technology. It will instead relocate it to a different device. There is now talk of a One M9 variant, codenamed Hima_Ultra or One M9 Plus. But don't let the name fool you. According to the leak, this won't be a phablet at all, though it doesn't exactly share the specs of this device. What will make the One M9 Plus different are some special features, which apparently include the DuoCamera setup and a fingerprint scanner. That latter might draw comparisons with the HTC One Max, which never really saw a successor, but, again, it is said to be not as big as that.

[UPDATE] Now we have a few photos from Weibo of what is supposedly the HTC One M9 Plus. Indeed, the rear of the smartphone does seem to hint at a DuoCamera configuration, though the fingerprint scanner seems not to be in the same location as the One Max, if there is one at all. It's also a bit difficult to gauge the actual size of this device from solitary pictures, but the design does betray the same look as the One M9.
