How Samsung took the Gear VR from virtual reality to reality

You no longer need to buy expensive goggles and a high-performance PC just to experience virtual reality (VR) within the comfort of your home. All you need are a Samsung Galaxy Note 4 and the Gear VR headset to satisfy your VR cravings.

Gamers and other enthusiasts of virtual reality can now experience the freedom offered by mobile-based head mounted displays (HMDs) such as the Gear VR, overcoming the last major obstacle to making virtual reality interactive and well, realistic. Compared to other HMDs, which are largely tethered to a PC and restrict range of movement, mobile-based HMDs offer an immersive experience coupled with unlimited mobility. One simply needs a Galaxy Note 4 (sold separately), snap it into a Gear VR headset, strap the contraption on, and go as far as you can without fear of tripping over wires.

It is worth noting that the development of mobile-based VR was first explored by Samsung more than a decade ago, using a clamshell feature phone. Although the experiment failed (largely due to the insufficient performance and display of the device), the idea behind mobile-based HMDs was validated, leading Samsung to test it more adequately with the later arrival of the Galaxy S4. Despite better performance and a full HD display, researchers found the Galaxy S4 to still be inadequate to match the needed requirements for an effective VR experience: fast and accurate head-tracking, super-fast reactive display, and GPU optimization.

The arrival of the Galaxy Note 4 proved to be the answer for Samsung’s efforts, largely due to its high-end application processor, GPU and QHD display. These features further facilitated the development of the Gear VR headset, finally realizing the dream of creating mobile-based HMDs. Thanks to Samsung—and its current partnership with Oculus VR, the brains behind the upcoming Rift—watching movies, playing games, or learning new things on your mobile Android device can now be more interactive, immersive, and straightforward exciting.

LG’s new curved G Flex 2 smartphone is beautifully bent

Relax, this isn't "bendgate". That sleek, new, naturally curved smartphone you see is LG’s new baby, the G Flex 2. Not only is it distinct from other smartphones in its class because of its curved shape, but the latest version of LG's Flex line carries a ton of features that make it stand out.

We need to remind you that what's under the hood is pretty impressive for the G Flex 2 -- a brand spanking new 64-bit octa-core Snapdragon 810 processor powers the device. The new smartphone will sport a sexy curved 5.5-inch 1080p display, and the G Flex 2 will reportedly run on Android 5.0 Lollipop -- with either 2GB or 3GB RAM as support. Check out the intro video below.

Apart from the robust basics, there are a lot of add-on features that LG has mastered throughout the past few years. But the real eye-catcher is the sleek and beautiful curve that fits your hand naturally and gives you better grip. It appears that the 3,000mAh battery is non-removable, although the back plate can be detached from the unit.

And hey, no worries about scratching the unit’s back plate, either -- the G Flex 2 features a unique self-healing technology that is said to make scratches disappear in under 10 seconds. We don't yet know how that happens, but we'll make sure to find out when we get our hands on this baby soon.

KiiTAG2 digital swiss knife packs battery, flashlight, storage

A new external smartphone battery charger has emerged onto Kickstarter and it’s fully functional. Think of it like your personal swiss army knife, but instead of having multiple physical tools which perform different tasks, you have a mechanical flashlight and buttons that operate as different phone functions via the KiiTag2 app. The KiiTAG2 acts an external memory card, with multiple charging head tips for different phones, and a key finding feature.

The device is neat in a sense that you get to program the 2 on-board buttons to phone functions for Android and iOs smartphones. The two buttons are referred to as “button A” and “button B”. Pressing any of the two buttons once - will shortcut you to the programed functionality. Pressing any of the two buttons twice - will shortcut you to another program functionality. You can store up to 4 different phone functionality on the KiiTAG2. If you ever happen to be in a pickle or just need an excuse to step away, the charging device will be your wingman. Some cool features include: Fake Phone Call, Remote Phone Answer, Auto Messenger, voice recording, camera snap button, along with other numerous features.

The physical design of this charging device is a plastic case. Inside, you’ll find a lithium battery, Bluetooth & OTG memory module, shortcut key buttons. a microUSB for Android or an iPhone lightning connecting charger, and the key finder feature. All phone features interact through the device and smartphone are connected via Bluetooth.

The design concept has a unique approach towards an external battery charger. With so many out there in the competition, its hard to stick out, but this small slim device looks like it can compete with the big dogs. The crowdfunding project has 59 days to go with a goal of $20,000. So far the project has reached over $2,500 with 59 days to go. Its still a semi-early start so we hope to see this project really take off, as it does have promising features. Make a pledge for $40 and you’ll be receiving an 8GB KiiTAG2 when the product expects to ship May 2015.

Gameloft brings Dungeon Hunter 5, pre-register now for rewards

Top-rated developer Gameloft has announced the fifth installment of the Dungeon Hunter series is currently in the works, but this early, followers of the game, as well as new users, can pre-register at the game’s micro-site (see source link below) to qualify for in-game rewards that can come in handy once the game launches officially.

Although Dungeon Hunter 5 is still under development, Gameloft has so far revealed that this version of the widely-popular game carries vast improvements with regard to graphics, gameplay, and user interface. Through its Developer Diary videos both on YouTube and the micro-site, Gameloft is saying that DH5 features a new multiplayer aspect, along with a “fusion” feature that allows the player to level up weapons and gear along with their primary character. The multiplayer element is especially interesting, as it allows players to create their own bases, or more appropriately called “dungeons,” and fill it up with characters or minions that they can use to raid other players’ dungeons for gold or to defend the player’s own. The cherry on top here is that at the end of each raid, one is forced to confront the user’s primary character, making it the boss opponent.

The storyline for Dungeon Hunter 5 is essentially a carry-over from the fourth installment, where the player now deals with the consequences of the events in DH4. In the aftermath of the demon invasion, the fictional kingdom of Valenthia has splintered, leaving everyone to fend for themselves. Users are no longer soldiers of war but now play as bounty hunters who must band together to survive against the demon onslaught. A typical player must obtain gold (which serves as the in-story currency to buy weapons and stuff, as well as someone else’s allegiance), gems (to unlock rare items), and fusion boosters that can be used to upgrade one’s own avatar together with its gear to make for a more formidable in-game character.

Players are encouraged to sign up now to receive in-game rewards when Dungeon Hunter 5 finally rolls out. Early registrants, however, are encouraged to promote the game even further, as Gameloft reveals the more the game is shared on social media, more rewards will be unlocked for players. So if you’re looking for some rare in-game sword or bow, it might be a good idea to visit the DH5 micro-site now and start sharing to your comrades.
