Field Trip will help you unveil local places and discover more

There may be hundreds of Google Map-related apps available on the Google Play Store today but only a few can be considered as really helpful. The native Google Maps app will never be enough for those who want more information about a certain place or want to see photos first before going. For those who like to travel and explore the world only on their screens, the Field Trip could be a new mode of "traveling". Discovering Google Maps doesn't have to be boring because there are many apps available, offering different information, photos, and details that really matter.

The Field Trip app offers some of the coolest and most interesting things or establishments in a particular place. The app can tell you more details about a location: local history, best places to shop, latest places to eat, points of interest, and more areas to have fun. In other words, the app helps you plan a very memorable field trip.

App runs in the background. A card with details about a certain location will pop up when you are close to something or when you are somewhere interesting. No need to click because the card will pop up automatically. You can have the app read the information to you should you want to just listen to audio.

The design and user interface of the new Field Trip match the new Android 5.0 Lollipop. Previous bugs have been fixed and more content have been added. Obviously, we can expect improvements on speed and performance of the app.

Kickstarter Finally Building Native Android App

Kickstarter

Kickstarter is infamous as the world’s largest funding platform, but for all its fame, the company lacks a native Android app. However, this finally seems to be turning around, as a listing for an Android Engineer for their app has been posted on the Kickstarter Jobs page.

The post Kickstarter Finally Building Native Android App appeared first on xda-developers.

Kore is a new remote app for Kodi/XBMC

We talked about the XBMC media player suite – now renamed “Kodi” because of copyright issues – a month ago when we talked about the Yatse remote app for Android. There is now another app out there to compete with Yatse which enables users to remotely control their Kodi/XBMC software straight from their Android device, it’s called Kore, and it looks promising.

With a media player suite as versatile and robust as XBMC, you would hope that your companion remote app will be up to the task as well. That’s where the Kore app comes in, made by Synced Synapse. According to the developer, Kore is a Kodi/XBMC remote control which has all the basic features implemented – including letting users control playback, view what's currently playing, a detailed view of the playlist, browsing of your media library (movies, tv shows, music, etc.), and even download media locally from network sources.

The comparison with Yatse is unfortunate but unavoidable, since both apps compete in doing the same thing – and if Kore’s reddit respondents are to be taken seriously, it looks like Kore seems to have a cleaner interface than Yatse. The response has been relatively warm, so things are looking up for the app.

If you use Kodi as a part of your entertainment system at home, then we suggest you give Kore a try. Check the download link below. Also, the developer seems to be a prompt responder to his reddit thread, so if you have questions, you might want to post it there.

Design your own games with this “pay what you want” course set [DEALS]

You may have gotten some programming chops from our previous Android app development courses, but that's only half the tools you'll need when making a game. The other half, game design, requires a different kind of mindset, a different set of tools. Luckily, we now also have a few courses just for that very purpose, and you get to pay what you want for these four courses from our Game Design Bundle.

Unlike our previous Android Community Deals highlights, this one has a specific mechanic, not unlike what Humble Bundle does for its games or ebooks. For a certain minimum amount, you get two out of four of the courses available. This includes learning how to create "hand-painted" textures for your game art assets as well as a course on the mystic arts of gamification, bringing "game thinking" into anything, eve non-games.

However, if you do beat the average, which currently stands at $8.14, you unlock the other two courses. These teach you how to build games using the popular Unity 3D game engine and creation tool. You also get to learn how to create professional video game art assets with tools like Photoshop and 3D Studio Max. If you do decide to pay the recommended $49.99 price tag, you get an even higher 93 percent discount off the total price. But if you really want something to boast about, you can top the highest bidder by paying $301.

Like Humble Bundles, you also get to share some of that amount with your choice of charity, including Child's Play, the World Wildlife Fund, and Creative Commons. So what are you waiting for? Learn and share all in one swoop with this Game Design Course Bundle from Android Community Deals.

Unlimited photo storage for Amazon prime members in Canada

Canada is getting some love from Amazon and it’s nothing but good news. To be more specific, Amazon Prime members who reside in Canada now have access to an unlimited amount of photo storage space through Amazon with Prime Photos. Tacking on more good news is that Amazon Student and Amazon Family members in Canada also have unlimited photo storage on Amazon Cloud Drive. Who knows why Amazon chose Canada to receive the massive free storage space, but who’s complaining?

Prime Photo is the photo storage app hosted by Amazon. We could safely bet that photos are what takes up most of our smartphones memory, and as much as we try to save on storage space, we tend to get really close or forced to delete content - leaving us in a panic mode of not wanting to delete anything.

If you’re an Amazon prime member who lives in Canada, those issues of photos taking up your phone are no longer your concerns. Simply throw all your memories, moments, and captivating times into Amazon’s Cloud Drive to free up your phone. Rinse and repeat.

The app is available for all platforms including Amazon’s Fire tablet, Mac, and Windows PC - making it easier to access photos from different devices.

SplashData outs Worst Passwords of 2014 list, 123456 still on top

SplashData recently released its Worst Passwords of 2014 list. This includes the most common passwords used by people on the Internet. By that we mean the passwords that you shouldn't be using at all because if you use them, there is a big chance of your identities being stolen or being hacked. More than 3.3 million passwords that were leaked last 2014 were compiled and analyzed. Of the millions of passwords, "123456" and "password" are the top two most commonly used.

These two have been the most popular for the past years. You would think people should be smart enough not to use the two but apparently, millions still use them. I can understand why and how but really, people should learn to be more careful this time after all the news of information being leaked and important accounts being hacked. Data of passwords analyzed were mostly from Western Europe and North America. Not included in the accounts analyzed were from Russia.

Also included in the Top 10 list were 12345, 12345678, qwerty, 123456789, 1234, baseball, dragon, and football. Personally, I don't remember ever using any of the passwords except for 1234 but I make sure that I quickly change it to something more unique. Some new passwords appeared on the list like "batman" and "696969'. Password "iloveyou" which was part of the Top 25 the previous year has been dropped off the new list. (So I guess people don't like saying it anymore eh?)

The Worst Passwords of 2014 list only shows that people do not think much about security and they put themselves at risk. The passwords are guessable and very weak because anyone can just think of them. SplashData CEO Morgan Slain suggested that passwords must not be in sequences so people won't easily guess them. He also suggested not to use a favorite sport, favorite team, your birthday, and common names as password because these are some of the terms more commonly used.

Are you still gonna use 123456? Naaah, please change your password now.
