If you're a fan of Gameloft's popular mobile first person shooter game N.O.V.A (Near Orbit Vanguard Alliance), then you'll probably be happy about this news. Almost 3 years after they released the 3rd edition of the game, they are now making it available for free for those who want to immerse themselves in the gameplay and world of N.O.V.A, or want to discover it for the first time.

The major storyline for the game is that humans are returning to earth, months after main character Kal defeated the Volterites. Since then, the president has been assassinated and several colonies have surrendered to the Volterite Protectorate. Now you have to return to earth and save humanity. There are 10 immersive levels that you have to fight through, from cities on Earth that have been torn asunder, to the Volterite city where the enemy is waiting for you.

You get to fight them with different weapons and skills, like running, shooting, driving different vehicles, and even piloting a mech. There are 7 multi-player modes wherein you can join 12-player battles. Some of the modes are Capture the Point, Capture the Flag, Free For All, etc, and they are played in 7 different maps as well. And for the first time in the game, your allies can help you by jumping on the vehicle you're driving and you can do the same on allies' vehicles as well.

You can download the Freedom Edition of N.O.V.A 3 from the Google Play Store. There are still some in-app purchases, so make sure you fix the settings if anyone's going to borrow your device to play the game as well.

Kingston brings Ultra-High Speed microSD for HD videos

With sports and adventure enthusiasts, frequent travelers and tourists, and creative mobile owners taking and uploading more cinematic and high resolution videos, storage in their mobile devices as well as transferring and uploading those video files has become a valid concern. Kingston Digital has announced during CES 2015 that they are introducing an Ultra-High Spped microsSD that can be a solution to that problem.

The UHS-1 microSD is a Speed Class 3, 90MB/s read and 80MB/s write card actually exceeds the specification release of the SD Association, which is still at 30MB/s read/write. But with this new microSD card, smartphones, tablets and cameras can directly record cinema-quality Full HD (1080p), Ultra HD (2160p), and 4K2K videos on to the card. You will also be able to view the 4K2K videos without buffering or stopping in the middle. Because of its specs, you will also be able to transfer or upload files faster, particularly when you use a USB 3.0 card reader.

It also claims that the SDCA3 is highly durable, which will be important when you're using your gadget to take videos of sports or adventure activities where there might be cause for damage for ordinary cards. But the Kingston UHS-1 is protected from water, shock/vibration, x-ray, and extreme temperature. Or you should hope so because otherwise, you wasted a full hour of taking videos of that ski or wakeboarding run if your card gets easily damaged.

The Kingston SDCA3 card can be purchased as a stand-alone card or with an SD card adapter. It has 16GB, 32GB, or 64GB capacity options. It also has a lifetime warranty and free technical support. Pricing details have not been released yet.

Saygus outs V2 Super Smartphone in Las Vegas

The International CES is one of the biggest tech shows today. It has become a launching pad for hundreds of companies and manufacturers and even startups who hope to bring the next big thing in gadget town. There seems to be a surplus now of smartphones because many brands are unveiling their latest phones and phablets. For one, there's Saygus introducing the new Saygus V2 handset.

Saygus just rolled out the Saygus V2 (pronounced as V-squared not V-two) at the CES in Las Vegas as a follow up to the Saygus Vphone. It's not just an ordinary smartphone but rather a super smartphone that features high specs and special functionalities. Wireless HD gaming is a first but the Saygus device already features it, together with movie beaming technology, impressive 3D sound, and 320GB of storage. I guess the last definition makes it a super phone.

Other specs of the Saygus include a 21 megapixel rear camera, 13 megapixel front-facing camera, optical image stabilization (OIS), sunlight viewability, IPX7 capability, a biometric fingerprint side scanner, and a huge 3100 mAh battery. There's the 5-inch FHD 1080p borderless screen packaged in a Kevlar protective edge with anodized brushed aluminum sides, and a lightweight magnesium mid-frame, and soft-touch back coating. Body is made in fiberglass. You can use the super smartphone anywhere in the world because of the CDMA and GSM wireless technologies.

Saygus V2 is now a 2015 CES Innovation Award Honoree in the Wireless Handset category. Pre-orders will begin later in January and will ship early this year. As usual, no details on pricing but since it's a super smartphone, it could be very expensive.

New SuperMHL standard introduced for sharing videos on 8K TVs

You may not have an 8K TV yet with a resolution of 7680 x 4320 (in fact, nobody has one as of this time), but if technology will be going that way soon, you should always be prepared for the eventuality of sharing videos from your mobile device or video players to that super TV. The MHL Consortium, composed of Sony, Toshiba, Nokia, Samsung, and Silicon Image, has announced at CES 2015 a new standard for transferring and viewing videos on 8k displays, calling it SuperMHL.

Basically, SuperMHL (think competitor of the HDMI or USB) is a cable that enables you to transfer data at high speeds and also power the mobile device connected to it. You plug in one end of the cable to your smartphone, tablet, laptop, set-top box, streaming media stick or Blu-ray player and then connect the other end to a TV or any display that has a resolution of 8K (considered the future of displays). It has a 32-pin connector, unlike the original MHL connector and can run up to 6 lanes of channels at the same time.

The 8K display will bring in 16 times as many pixels as a standard Full HDTV (currently at 1920 x 1080) and ordinary cables will not be able to properly transfer data between two devices at a high speed with those kinds of specifications. That is what SuperMHL will be doing, delivering 8K level video at 120 frames per second (ideally, at least). It can also charge devices faster than the previous MHL cables, giving up to 40 watts of power while charging. It is also reversible and can run in audio-only mode if you wish to do so.

The specs of the SuperMHL will be available for download by the end of January and is expected to be slightly thinner than the HDMI connector. The supported source connectors include micro-USB, USB Type C and proprietary connectors.

HTC RE camera update will let you stream live to YouTube

Every photo or video needs an audience, whether it be ourselves or others and what better audience is there for an action camera like the HTC RE than a live one? With a firmware update coming tomorrow, HTC's rather odd-looking action camera will be gaining a new ability, allowing users to share their precious memories and moments as they happen with anyone in the world. And by anyone, they mean those who will be tuning in to your live stream performance on YouTube.

By itself, the HTC RE is already a versatile and handy piece of mobile photography equipment, able to shoot stills and record videos and store them even locally in a microSD card. But an action camera like this is meant for action and there is really no better way to convey the spirit of the moment than through live streaming. With the update, you will be able to share that graduation march, that once in a lifetime stage performance, that exhilarating bungee jump, with family and friends and maybe even the public.

The firmware update will arrive via the RE companion app on the smartphone. Once updated, simply log in to your YouTube channel from the app and start streaming. It's as easy as that. You can invite viewers to your feed by sending your broadcast link via SMS or email and even if they miss out on the live show, the link will remain active for a replay. Alternatively, if you're aiming for fame, you can also broadcast it publicly.

The HTC RE software update will begin rolling out tomorrow, January 9. It will only be available on Google Play Store initially and iOS users will have to wait sometime later this quarter to get their update. HTC RE owners should note that while the camera alone can record and store videos by itself, live streaming to YouTube will require a paired smartphone.

i-Blades to bring “smart” smartphone cases to the market

Our phones have already become smart, but do we need our phone cases to become smarter as well? i-Blades thinks we should and they unveiled during CES 2015 the world's first "smart" smartphone case as they believe what holds your device can actually be turned into something that will personalize it even more. Using the "blades" technology (patented and patent-pending), the case can be turned into not just a battery extender, but a storage, software, and hardware extender as well.

According to CEO Jorge Fernandes, customizing a smartphone's functionality and adding features to it was possible without actually having to build a brand new smartphone. That's where the blades technology and modular platform comes in. There is a Base Blade that gives you the basic functionality of being a case and a battery extender and it attaches to your smartphone using the micro USB and then has an outward facing connector so that you can still use it for other functions like charging or connecting to external items.

Then the fun really starts with the other Blades you can attach to the Base Blade. The Memory Blade can provide added external memory of up to 1TB for your smartphone, solving your storage problems if you have a lot of pictures, videos and music. The Sports Blade meanwhile can be added so you can track your fitness activities like running and sports, hunting, fishing, and even pets management. You can even use it as a remote control for drones. The Medical Blade is for health monitoring, like diabetes and heartbeat.

They will also be providing a platform for developers to create add-on blades to the base or to create new customized blades. They also plan to partner with other case makers as well as OEMs to offer their technology to create more products and expand options for their consumers. They plan to ship sample cases to partners by April or May, ramp up by August or September and then make it available to the market by December. No pricing details yet but initial estimates say that the Base Blade or extended battery might be at $20 while a 1TB Memory Blade can cost as much as $1,000.
