Dumb Ways To Die game sequel now available on Android

What started out as just a public service announcement to promote safety in the Metro Train stations in Australia turned into an award-winning viral campaign and global phenomena, spawning music videos, memes, parodies and an app and mobile game. Now Dumb Ways To Die is back with a game sequel with the same old fun, quirky challenges, but now with an expanded universe.

Dumb Ways to Die 2: The Games has a whole new slew of "dumb" characters that you need to save from inadvertently committing suicide. Sounds dark for a game that might appeal to kids eh? But it still retains the same light-hearted but sometimes brutal humor that has appealed to people the past years and in the game's previous incarnation. It has 28 mini-games where you can solve puzzles and guide the characters to safety.

You have challenges like jumping electric fence hurdles, dynamite relay race, dolphin rodeo (just like a normal rodeo, but with dolphins!), rocket ski jump, landmine curling, etc. You get the point. It's like normal action adventure games, but with an added element of deadly danger. As you get more points, you get to unlock the more popular characters (well, popular to those who are obsessed with the dumb characters). And if you learn something about train safety, then they have done their job.

While the game is free, there are several in-app purchases littered throughout the game. You are given tickets at the beginning of the game so you can get on "rides" or the games. When you run out of tickets, you have to wait until you're given more or buy them outright if you're impatient. But if you want to take that risk, you can download Dumb Ways To Die 2: The Games for free from the Google Play Store.

Microsoft Xim 1.3 share your photos onto the bigscreen

Picture sharing is a great way to communicate with your friends and family and is essentially the core of most social media today. Microsoft Xim is an app that lets you share your photos with friends and family through their own phone. Usually when you have a photo you’d like to share, your friends would gather around you to see. Now you don’t have to worry about the overcrowding, Xim hosts the pictures onto your friends’ phone and lets you browse through the pictures together. Today Xim has come out with a new update that lets you share photos from your phone to the big screen.

Xim 1.3 is the latest update to the app. The update lets you share photos onto the big screen via streaming devices like Xbox One, Apple TV, Google Chromecast, and Amazon Fire TV. The app connects through a wireless network and automatically detects those devices. You would simply select and connect. Your phone and big screen will swipe, pan and zoom synchronously. At the same time, you can invite your friends and family to contribute to the show by adding their own photos. The new app introduces a different experience and looks fun.

One of the perks about Xim is that not everyone needs it. You only need to download the app if you are the one initiating the photo sharing. Everyone else just tags along for the ride. It’s simple enough in terms that you select the photos you want to share, invite friends and family to watch, and everyone watches. The app is cross platforms which means everyone can enjoy the app regardless of having an iPhone or Android phone. With the new update, you can broadcast the pictures onto the big screen TV for everyone to watch, instead of looking into their phones.

Another cool feature about Xim is that you don’t have to be in close proximity to a streaming device to share. You can have your friend be near a device and connect to it. Your friend would then load Xim and connect to you and now you can control the photo sharing through your friend’s phone by uploading your own pictures. Creators of the app – Microsoft Fuse Labs says that there’s more in store for Xim.

Inbox by Gmail now with better Android Wear, tablet support

While Inbox, the separate email app released by Gmail last October, is still in the invite-only stage (remember, that's how Gmail started a long time ago?), the user base is steadily growing, with some eagerly waiting for their friends to let them in on all the email fun. Now the latest update to the app brings you better support for both Android Wear supported wearables as Android-run tablets.

While Inbox did support smartwatches that were running on the Android Wear platform before, there were some complaints that it wasn't as effective or as user-friendly. So Google now promises that it is now more compatible with their platform for wearables. It is easier to view, respond, arrange and label incoming messages, from the convenience of your smartwatch. This might convince those who are more mobile to clamor for those elusive invites.

The update also brings a more optimized experience for tablet users. While before it just looked like an expanded version of the smartphone app, it has now been redesigned to maximize the bigger screen of Android tablets. It will supposedly be more user-friendly as well. The changelog also says that Inbox now has a better suggestion typing feature which will hopefully make them more accurate and a little bit faster too.

Some are still not convinced of the necessity for Gmail to have a separate email app when they're perfectly content with the current native one, or even other more reliable email apps. But since this is still in its infancy stage, we have to adapt either an early adapter or wait and see point of view before we can say that it is a bust or that it will become our email app of choice. Google is rolling out the Inbox updates starting today, so just patiently wait (if you have it already) to see if this will make you love the app more.

The Blu Studio 7.0 is a budget-friendly 7-inch smartphone

Yeah, you can balk at the size all you want – you know we all did. There’s just something about a smartphone when it breaks the 6-inch barrier that makes it go from useful to weird – not quite a tablet, too big for a phone. But Florida-based outfit Blu wants to take that risk in putting out the Blu Studio 7.0, a huge 7-inch smartphone for the budget conscious.

The Blu Studio 7.0 is straight up huge – and it does try to leverage on the size by saying that there is more space to do everything from email, social media, to movies and videos. But it is probably the spec list that would deter me from buying one if ever. Under the hood there’s a 1.3Ghz dual core processor backstopped by a Mali 400 graphics chip and 1GB of RAM. This line alone tells you that there will be lag times during usage and performance, although probably not heavy lag. The 7-inch display doesn’t break the HD 720 barrier at 1024x600 (169ppi).

Then there’s the rest of the specs, a 5MP/2MP camera combo, 8GB of storage, 3G connectivity and running on Android 4.4.2 Kitkat. You can see that the huge phone is targeted plainly at the lower market niches. But just because it has a big screen doesn’t mean it will sell. Or will it?

You remember the Samsung Galaxy W, right? Of course you don’t. Well, it was Samsung’s attempt at the same gigantic form factor, with slightly better specs. But it ended up not doing well in the market – because people probably get weirded-out by the huge size. Be that as it may, the Blu Studio 7.0 is now available through Amazon for USD$149.99 unlocked.

Samsung to update Galaxy Note 4, Note Edge directly to Android 5.0.1

Well, great news for users of the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 and owners of the edgier Samsung Galaxy Edge – it looks like Samsung is going to skip the Android 5.0 Lollipop update and go directly to the most recent 5.0.1 update, if these leaked images are anything to go by.

If you are not familiar with Android 5.0.1, it is a small but important bug fix update to the initial Android 5.0 Lollipop launch that offers a number of bug fixes aimed at improving Google’s new operating system. These bugs were mostly discovered by Nexus users and are now dealt with in this small-ish but essential update. Samsung has recently updated the Samsung Galaxy S5 to Android 5.0.1, so it is logical to assume that the South Korean gadget giant would be concentrating on updating two of its premier phablets to the same version. Both devices will be likely to skip the Android 5.0 update, since we are already seeing builds for the devices running on Android 5.0.1. Check the images below.

The Galaxy Note 4 has already been tested on Lollipop, we know that it runs quite well. If you want to check quickly for yourself, check out the video below for some hints about how Lollipop runs on the Note 4. As for the Note Edge, we all know that it’s virtually a sibling of the Galaxy Note 4, just with the rounded side screen.

The big question is when we will be seeing this update. Judging from the leaks, it might just be very, very soon. So hold on to your tempers, Note 4 and Note Edge users. We gather this will be a short wait for that update.

Baldurs Gate II Enhanced Edition makes its way to Android

Beamdog has done it again. The game developers have successfully ported and launched the sequel to one of the most popular classic computer RPGs of all time, Baldur's Gate II, in its enhanced and remastered form. Now gamers both old and new can get a chance to relive the good old days or forge new adventures using nothing more than the small but powerful computer hidden in their pockets. Of course, like in many games, a good adventure has a price to be paid.

Old school games, and by that we really mean older titles and not just new ones made to look old, can be a gold mine of experience for mobile gamers. These games bring depth and immersion in ways many newer smartphone games don't offer. A solid story line, sophisticated game mechanics, and a lineage that spans decades. That's what Beamdog and its ports bring to the Android table.

Like its predecessor, Baldur's Gate II takes place in the Forgotten Realms setting of the acclaimed Dungeons and Dragons game world (AD&D 2 to be exact). You take the role of the sire of the God of Murder, bred solely to die at the hands of heroes, fueling the god's return. But you were raised with love and were turned against your nature. Now it is up to you whether you will become the monster you were born to be or be the hero you were taught to be. It's nurture vs. nature, RPG style.

BG2EE, as gamers would call it, covers the main Shadows of Amn campaign. But it also includes expansions such as Throne of Bhaal and The Black Pits II all for free. The game does cost $9.99, which in mobile game standards is quite steep, but the quality and experience might very well be worth the price. Some might be surprised that there are in-app purchases, but these are really just for additional content, like extra companions and character portraits.
