Fellice Android game lets you play around with cell organisms

If you're a frustrated microbiologist or you just have a thing for cell-like organisms moving around (and not under a microscope), then this new Android game might just capture your attention. No, don't worry, it isn't a tutorial about how cells reproduce and all that, but Felllice looks just like a microbiology lesson but more fun for those who don't really understand it. The developer calls it as an "interpretative simulation game of cell life" but without all the lectures.

Felllice, which is a play on Cell Life, has just three methods for you to progress or win: move, eat and avoid. Of course you have to move around, since you're supposedly a cell, and that's what cells do right? Then you have to eat the smaller cells that you encounter in order for you to grow and expand. But beware of the larger cells you come across because if they manage to eat you, you'll be reduced to your original size and you have to start all over again.

That's all you have to do, and obviously, the game isn't that complicated. It has a very minimalist design (black and white flat) and gameplay, but the sound design makes it a bit more fascinating with 5 different kinds plus a soothing ambient music. The arena mode lets you play against 25 different opponents, in case you get tired of the normal mode. Because the game is simple enough, you can play it while doing something else, in case that something else is something boring and monotonous and you like to steal a few minutes away from said task.

You can buy Felllice for $2.27 from the Google Play Store. There are no in-app purchases, so you are quite safe from (supposedly) unwanted or unauthorized charges.

Nexon Mobile releases Legion of Heroes MMORPG for Android

So the buzz for Legion of Heroes, Nexon Mobile’s newest PC quality MMORPG for Android, has been building up for quite a while. The game was expected to launch in July, but more testing and development had to happen – pushing to the launch to, well, now. Legion of Heroes is now officially available on Android.

This is the second title Nexon M has launched this week, right after Base Busters, which is a tank driving and shooting game (lots of cannons, explosions, all those macho stuff). But Legion of Heroes is a little more subtle – it’s got all the dungeon crawling goodness of your standard RPG games, hopefully you survive those and level up your character hopefully getting all the great items and loot along the way.

But being an MMORPG, the game also allows you to connect with online friends for some good old guild quests and raids – allowing up to 45 people/characters in a guild. With your guild you take on the heavy hitting bosses or go on PvP with other guilds.

Unlike other RPGs, the game takes the turn-based combat style rather than the more random hack-and-slash. If you want to give this a try, it is already available at the Google Play Store as a free download with IAP.

NHL 2K brings hockey fun to Android devices

There is one sport that can get our hearts thumping, raise up our adrenaline, excite our senses and bring people from all walks of life together... that is, if you're Canadian (or maybe some Americans as well). We're not talking about football of course, but rather, hockey. And now you can enjoy all of the things that you love about the sport, albeit digitally, with the release of NHL 2K for Android. The new season of the NHL starts in a few days and this may be the perfect game to pump you up.

The game has several game modes that hockey fans will be able to enjoy (and maybe practice on for that weekend hockey pickup game in your neighborhood). Aside from the normal game, you can also play it in the Mini Rink mode with an arcade style of a 3 vs 3 game play, which makes the game even faster and more furious. If you'd like to enhance your shootout skills, at least through your fingers, you can use the turn-based penalty shooutout mode, where you can play against friends or other players using that mode as well.

The My Career mode is pretty interesting as you can create and custom a player, train and play him and follow his career all throughout several seasons. You can get him to play for actual teams in the NHL. The app also gives you live and updated rosters of the teams in the league so you can keep track of your favorite teams and players, even as you play the game while watching actual games on TV (or even live!).

NHL 2K is available at the Google Play Store for $8. Seems a pretty steep price for a mobile game, but if you're a true-blue hockey fan, you wouldn't really mind spending that much.

SwiftKey releases virtual keyboard’s Material Design themes

Even if we're still a few weeks (for some, maybe months!) away from the official release of Android Lollipop, a lot of apps have been releasing their own take on Google's Material Design, giving users a preview of what it will be like when the major update is finally released. Virtual keyboard SwiftKey is the latest app to do so, releasing two new themes in their store that were designed "in the spirit of the upcoming Android L keyboard" but with what they say, is their own unique touch.

The two new themes are called, of course, Material Dark and Material Light, with obviously the two shades of the normal gray-ish look of the keyboard. It has the same features that have made SwiftKey popular among mobile users, primarily the secondary characters found above each key (like '0-9' for QWERTY, symbols above the ASDF buttons) which you can choose by just long pressing the letter. They are easily seen but subtle enough not to be distracting. Another popular feature is the number pad that makes it easier for people to enter phone numbers, addresses and IP addresses.

The Minimal theme is popular among SwiftKey users and so they basically pattered the simple look of the new Material themes after it. But even though it is very minimalist in look, they also wanted to add the secondary characters and number pad features to it for ease of use.

The SwiftKey virtual keyboard is free to download from the Google Play Store if you don't have it yet. But to be able to use the Material Dark or Material Light themes, you need to purchase it from the in-app SwiftKey Store. Each theme costs $0.99 each.

Xiaomi to migrate data center from China to US and Singapore

Xiaomi is a Chinese firm that is seeing some success outside of its home country. One of the things that turns many international users off is having their personal and business information stored in China where cybercrime is rampant. Xiaomi's Hugo Barra has recently announced that the company is in the process of migrating data from Beijing where it currently resides to data centers in other countries.

Xiaomi will be using Amazon AWS data centers in California and Singapore to start. The official reason for migrating the data is to improve performance for Mi fans around the world, cut down on latency, and reduce failure rates.

Xiaomi does say that it equips the firm to maintain high privacy standards and comply with local data protection regulations. Server and data migration will happen in three phases with phase one being e-commerce migration to the Amazon AWS centers mentioned previously. This phase will be over by the end of October.

Phase 2 is MIUI service migration with data going to Amazon AWS centers in Oregon and Singapore with transfer expected to be over by the end of 2014. Phase three is described as going local with improvements made for India and Brazil. Those locations don’t have Amazon AWS so Xiaomi will work with local providers for those markets with things happening in 2015.
