Outcast Odyssey brings card-battling to another level

For serious gamers, a game that will combine dungeon crawling, card collecting/battling and RPG in one package is probably a dream come true. One new title available on Android devices called Outcast Odyssey does just that. It is based on the real-life card-battling game, but now adapted in mobile gaming format. It lets those who've played the game before experience it on a whole new level and can also bring in new fans who've never tried this kind of game before.

The adventure game is set in a world where monsters, magics and machines rule. As you explore the different landscapes, you'll unearth different monsters, treasures and jackpot treasure chests that will allow you to enhance and evolve your cards. You can play the game as a single player or play against others in a Player vs Player (PVP) multi-player mode. You can also join a guild so you can battle together with a team against other guilds, depending on each other for survival.

The cards are designed by such artists like Chuck Pires and Warren Luow, who are well-known names in the gaming world. The app also uses particle and parallax effects so that your cards don't look just like ordinary items but works of art (that can kill). You can also compete with other Outcasts from around the world, and if you are highly rated, you'll receive some prizes, which they give out on a weekly basis.

Outcast Odyssey is free to download from the Google Play Store. However, there are some in-app purcahse options available, some for as much as $99.99, so better disable that in your settings if you don't want to be surprised when your credit card bill comes in.

JuiceSSH now with Material Design, ready for Android Lollipop

JuiceSSH is probably the unanimous choice of server admins who have to do remote administration of SSH-enabled servers as their Android device SSH client. There are a bevy of features within the app that other clients just don’t have. And now, the developers are getting ready for the big Android 5.0 splash, as they pretty up their app with Material Design.

There’s no real reason to live in a cave these days, and so we’re pretty sure you’ve heard about Material Design, which is Android Lollipop’s chosen aesthetic theme and feel. Just recently, Google released an updated set of guidelines and its recommended color swatches for developers to be able to follow the Material Design look.

JuiceSSH is following that look with its new version, although the developers are cautious enough to do the update via staged rollout. That means that there will be some people who might not yet see a notification for an update. But there’s a way around that, too – click on the source link below and look for the download link for the updated APK that the devs posted at Reddit.

As for issues, there are relatively few. One of those that the devs are monitoring are app crashes when using Android 4.2.1. If you are using this specific version, the developers of JuiceSSH are asking that you hold off on the update while they investigate the issue. Other than that, you can go ahead and either download the APK or check via the Google Play Store if an update has already reached you.

Talon (Plus) for Android 5.0 released, Classic unpublished

It is a bittersweet week for fans of Talon for Twitter from Klinker Apps, who also develops EvolveSMS and Blur Launcher. The developer has just released Talon for Twitter (Plus), a new and improved version of the popular Twitter client, but one that has been designed for Android 5.0 and with Material Design in mind. But sadly, that also marked the death of the Classic version of Talon that works on other Android versions, due to Twitter's rather restrictive authorization token limit.

A bit of the good news first. Talon for Twitter is now ready for Android Lollipop, complete with all the trappings of Material Design, including butter smooth animations, bold colors, and speed. The developers note that since Android 5.0 is still a moving target, expect some changes along the way, but hopefully nothing drastic or unfavorable. The app is priced at $3.99 and, unfortunately works only with Android 5.0.

The sad news is that the older version of the app has been removed from Google Play Store. The reason is that Talon for Twitter Classic has reached Twitter's token limit. To artificially drive people to use its official apps instead, Twitter allots only 100,000 authorization tokens to third-party apps, limiting the total number of users that can link their Twitter accounts to the app. So, quite ironically, the more popular an app is, the faster it runs out of tokens. That is exactly what happened to Talon the other day and Klinker Apps decided to remove the app from Google Play Store listing so that new users will no longer be able to buy it, thinking they can still use the app.

The story, fortunately, ends on a happy note. Two in fact. While Talon Classic is gone from Google Play Store, those who have bought the app before will still be able to see it in their Downloaded apps list (or from this link) and install it as normal. The developers will even provide updates to those as well. It will only be new users who will no longer be able to find it or install it from Google Play Store. But more than that, as promised, Klinker Apps will open source Talon for Twitter Classic soon, making it possible not only to build the app yourself, provided you have the tools, of course, but also to learn from this highly successful app's source code to build your own apps in the future.

Nexus 6, Android 5.0 will include ‘Ambient display’

Android.com’s new page dedicated to Android 5.0 Lollipop’s and all its bag of tricks makes mention of a feature that is a lot similar to the new Moto X’s “Moto Display” technology – it’s called “Ambient Display” for the moment, and it allows devices running Android 5.0 to wake up as soon as it its picked up or when notification come in.

We shouldn’t really be surprised, given that the Nexus 6 takes a lot from Motorola’s design book – although still tethered to Google’s Nexus branding. The feature was first seen embedded on the new Moto X, although there have been 3rd party implementations of the same idea before (like Peek for Android).

ambient-display-lollipop

The feature page also makes mention of a sort of “knock-to-wake-up” feature similar to LG’s Android implementation, saying that “where supported by the hardware, your device will wake up as soon as you pick it up or tap the screen twice.” There is no clear explanation of the feature yet, but it might be that AMOLED screens will allow for notification “peeking” like the new Moto X does.

Why did you not catch this with the latest developer build, you ask? Well, it’s because it isn’t there. This feature will only be available with the final build of Android Lollipop. But this is a good sign that Android Dev is starting to accept more of the fanciful features that attract people and make Android such a cool ecosystem to work with.

OnePlus to offer limited-time pre-orders on October 27

It's finally happening for those of you who have been waiting endlessly for an invite to buy the OnePlus smartphone but haven't gotten one. For a limited period this coming October 27, they will be accepting pre-orders for those who were not among the thousands of people who received an invite to purchase the elusive smartphone. This is the first time they will be doing so, after receiving numerous requests and complaints as well as to their method of letting consumers have access to their device.

While their unique approach to creating buzz and hype for their product was at first impressive, eventually, people started getting frustrated at the fact that they cannot just outrightly buy something that they want and have to jump through hoops first. They realized and acknowledged eventually that it was becoming impractical and inconvenient, and so they recently announced the details for the pre-order system. While waiting for the official pre-order date schedule, you can now "arrange" your shopping cart, like delivery address, payment options, etc so that placing your pre-order easily on the designated date.

Pre-orders will be accepted starting October 27 at 15:00 GMT (that's 08:00 PST and 11:00 EST) and will only last for an hour. Once you place your pre-order, you will be told the estimated shipping time for your device. In case you suddenly receive that elusive invite after you've placed your pre-order, you can just skip the queue and get instant delivery for your device. Accessories sold on their site will also be on sale during this one-hour window, including the JBL E1+Earphones which will be available for $24.99 and will go back to its regular price of $39.99 after the pre-order period.

It's a good thing that the OnePlus has more than lived up to the hype and its promise, or else this marketing ploy would have spectacularly failed. The one-hour pre-order period might seem too short but it's at least something to assuage disgruntled consumers who just want to buy the device. Let's just hope their inventory and system can handle the expected onslaught of orders, or else, they will have even more annoyed would-have-been OnePlus owners.
