Lenovo SmartBand appears at FCC, an OS-friendly fitness tracker

It seems Lenovo is not going to let itself be left behind in the wearable device trend. There have been little to no noises about a wearable device until now, as the fitness-centered Lenovo SmartBand appears at the FCC – seemingly just about ready for launch.

So here’s the lowdown on Lenovo’s new gadget. The SmartBand comes with the usual fitness tracking features, and it connects and syncs to your phone via Bluetooth support. That said, it doesn’t matter if you’re using an Android, iOS or Windows 8 device – that’s just fine for this specific fitness wearable. The fitness band also has a small display where it can show you fitness stats, display the time, and offer reminders.

The SmartBand will also vibrate and display a notification when there’s an incoming call to your phone. The documents at the FCC say that the device will give you 7 days of uptime on a full charge, and is IP67 grade for dust and water resistance.

Lenovo has probably made a calculation to land this device not squarely against smartwatches, but more against multi-purpose fitness trackers like the Jawbone or the Fitbit. Against those, the Lenovo SmartBand has a distinct advantage of its long battery life. We do not have any information yet regarding pricing, or when this device will be launched.

New Nexus 9 tablet image leaks

Another image of what appears to be the HTX Nexus 9 tablet has leaked. The leaked image comes only a day after the Nexus 9 tablet is thought to have been spied going through the FCC for its approvals. With the FCC hurdle cleared (presumably), the tablet could be hitting the market at any time.

The newly leaked image shows a device with flat edges and rounded corners with what appears to be matte plastic. Some rumors had pegged the tablet to use a metal body and that doesn’t appear to be the case. Along with the leaked image comes an apparent confirmation that the tablet will use matte plastic as the Nexus 5 by LG did.

Those are the only new tidbits about the tablet that we have learned. Previous rumors tipped that the tablet has integrated WiFi, NFC, and it may use the NVIDIA Tegra K1 processor.

We expect the tablet to have an 8-inch Full HD 1080p display and it may run Android L for the operating system. Interestingly, the tablet is tipped to feature 2.4GHz and 5.xGHz WiFi.

Galaxy A5 renders leak showing black and white devices

We have already talked about the Samsung Galaxy A5 smartphone a few times. Some images and details leaked of the device last month. This week some new renders of the Galaxy A5 smartphone have leaked, and the renders appear to be official.

The renderings show black and white versions of the smartphone with flat edges and rounded corners. The A5 has a physical button in the center of the area under the screen. The Galaxy A5 is expected to use premium materials like metal bodies in the construction.

We know a few things about the smartphone already, one of them is that it will measure 5.48" x 2.74" x 0.26". The display of the smartphone is a 5-inch 720p Super AMOLED unit. Since the smartphone is aiming at the mid-range, it won't get the latest and greatest hardware inside.

The processor is tipped to be a quad-core Snapdragon 410 and the phone will have 2GB of RAM. The rear camera is a 13MP unit and storage will be 16GB internal with a microSD card for expansion. The rumored price point for the device is $400.

Samsung shows off the new Galaxy Core Prime

Another week, another Galaxy device is introduced. Wait, or should I say another Galaxy Prime? How about another Galaxy Core? Don't be confused but Samsung has just shown off the Galaxy Core Prime phone. This won’t be another impressive camera phone as the selfie-focused Galaxy Grand Prime as it only has 5MP rear and 2MP front-facing cameras. Making this a winner though is its LTE connectivity.

Smartphone is now ready for pre-order in India through retailer Flipkart but looks like the model listed has no LTE yet. Samsung has not made an official announcement yet but different versions of Galaxy Core Prime have passed through TENAA. Models G3609, G3608 and SM-G3606 are all Galaxy Core Primes that each has TD-LTE connectivity and a dual-SIM slot.

We’re waiting for Samsung to officially launch the phone but we already know the Galaxy Core Prime will have a 4.5-inch PLS LCD screen, WVGA resolution, 1GB RAM, quad-core 1.3GHz processor, 5 megapixel cam, 2MP front-facing camera, 1080p video recording capability, 8GB built-in storage, and a 2,000mAh battery. Phone is thin at only 8.8mm.

Samsung Galaxy Core Prime is listed at INR 8,500 ($137 in the US). Let's wait for Samsung to officially unveil the new smartphone and announce if and when it will arrive in the United States and the rest of the world.

Aluminum unibody Samsung Galaxy A3, A5 leaked

We’ve been given the idea that Korean gadget giant Samsung is at least serious about dispelling the “myth” that it can’t make beautiful metal-bound phones. The Samsung Galaxy Alpha was the first in what now seems to be a whole line of phones with that premium metallic feel to it. The Samsung Galaxy A5 was the most recent one leaked, and another aluminum unibody phone now follows with the Samsung Galaxy A3.

Both phones were recently leaked, and both are showing what Samsung can do when it wants to prove a point. The Galaxy A5, as discussed before, would be close to the specs the Galaxy Alpha is carrying – now revealed via a GFX Bench appearance to have a 64-bit capable processor in the quad-core Snapdragon 410 and an Adreno 306 GPU supported by 2GB of RAM. That will be pushing pixels to a 4.8-inch 720p display. The A5 will be a mid-tier phone with a unique metallic material with chamfered edges.

It looks like the Galaxy A3, the smaller one in the photo below we suppose, will be using pretty much the same design language. There are no specs out as of the moment for this new “premium feel” A-Series Samsung phone, but at best it would have dual SIM capabilities like the Galaxy A5. Samsung is also reportedly working on a 5.5-inch member of this metallic line, the rumored Galaxy A7.

The Galaxy A5 will purportedly be priced at around USD$400 to USD$450, while the Galaxy A3 will be a hundred dollars lower. Given the momentum from the modestly positive reviews of the Samsung Galaxy Alpha, Samsung will want to get this line out in the market relatively fast.

Google Play Music might have removed deauthorization limit

Just a couple of months after they clarified issues regarding the deauthorization rules and device limits on its Play Music, it seems that Google might have backtracked once again. Several users have reported that they have been able to deauthorize their devices beyond the limit set by Google just last August. No word yet if this is a "final ruling" or if they are just experimenting with regards to the limits set on devices that are authorized or deauthorized to use Play Music.

Just last August, Google set a limit of up to four deauthorizations every year, even though they still maintained that you can authorize up to ten devices for your Google Play Music account. But several staffers from Android Central noticed that they were able to go beyond that limit as of today. The web interface reportedly gave extra four "slots" while the apps on both Android and iOS gave out limitless deauthorizations. Again, we aren't sure if this is a new rule or if someone made a mistake and pushed a button that shouldn't be pushed.

It might seem like a trivial problem for some (who wants to go through that whole authorization/deauthorization process several times anyways?) but for those who use multiple devices or those who change Android gadgets often or those who share devices and Google Play Music accounts with family members, it is a big deal. The policy on the Play Music site still says that you are allowed only four deauthorizations per year, so it just might really be a software glitch.

But if you're one of those who was moaning about the policy change last August, now is your chance to deauthorize old Android devices from your Play Music account. (And you better do it quickly in case it was really just an error.) Just go to the app's settings, click on General and My Devices and un-check those that you don't want using your Play Music account anymore.

Fruit Ninja: not just your fruit-slicing game anymore

If you've spent countless hours touching your screen in whatever new slice and dice game you're playing, chances are, you owe this skill to Fruit Ninja. The mobile game which came out in 2010 helped change the way we interact with games on our smartphones and tablets. Now, after four years, it is being revamped from the ground up and it's not just the Fruit Ninja that you sliced through before.

The game has been rebuilt from the ground up, and aside from the Classic and Zen mode that we're used to, the Arcade mode now takes center stage and it will have you furiously slicing your screen for endless hours again. You now have new characters, Katsuro and Mari from the, well, fruity world of Fruitasia to join Sensei, Gutsu and Truffles. They will be training you to become the ultimate fruit slicer, maybe in preparation for a fantastic career in the supermarket, slicing fruits. The ultimate object of the game is still to slice fruits and not slice bombs, but the major update has added a few surprises as well.

All the blades and dojos are there not just for simply slicing fruits but will affect the gameplay as well with their new powers. The upgrades also have an effect and are not just cosmetic anymore. You can create harmless bombs, add points to combos and there is now also a powerup boost system. There are also new characters that pop up and of course, you have to avoid slicing them to smithereens. And if you want to try to get high-scoring combos like a ten-fruit Great Wave or something, you can now mix and match your gear to be able to pull these off.

Fruit Ninja 2.0 is now available for update in the Google Play Store. If you already uninstalled it previously and would like to start playing again with the updated version, you can download it for free or get the paid version at just $0.99.
