Samsung Galaxy Mega 2 LTE out in Asia, spotted on Thai website

The Samsung Galaxy Mega 2 was advertised by a Malaysian retailer last month and the new Android smartphone is now available in Asia with a $400 price tag. The Korean tech giant has recently listed the phone on its Thai website.

The phone has been available for some time but Samsung has listed the phone on its official website for the world to see its official images and list of specs and features over the weekend. The phone replaces the Galaxy Mega 5.8 and Mega 6.3 released last year—making it a another possible bestseller from Samsung.

Samsung’s newest Galaxy Mega 2 boasts of a massive 6-inch display, 720 x 1280 pixel resolution, 1.5GB RAM, quad-core 1.5 GHz processor, 8 megapixel rear camera with LED flash, 2.1 megapixel front-facing camera, 1080p video recording capability, 16GB of built-in storage, memory card slot, and LTE connectivity. Out of the box, the phone runs Android KitKat.

The Galaxy Mega 2 is larger than a Galaxy Note 4 so this could directly rival the newly introduced iPhone 6 Plus. Samsung and Android have been in the phablet game the past years already so it’s interesting how their phones will fare with the entrance of the iPhone 6 Plus. But then again, is there really a need to compare?

Samsung Galaxy Mega 2 is now out in Asia. No word when the phone will roll out in Europe and North America though.

Relive the book and movie experience with Maze Runner game

It seems like America has fallen in love with Maze Runner, if book sales and the box-office this weekend are any indications. The movie based on the book series by James Dashner took top spot in most theatres in the country. Now mobile gamers will have the chance to experience being a Glader in the new movie tie-in Android game, of course also called The Maze Runner.

However, if you expect the game to be as complicated as the book or movie, you might end up a bit disappointed because it is simply an endless runner game. Although, based on the concept of the story, it is quite understandable that this is the kind of game they would make. The story is about a group of boys or runners who everyday try to run into the maze to try to figure out how to escape from the Glade where they are trapped with no idea or memory why they were there in the first place. So it does make sense that you would have an endless runner game for this tie-in.

Using touch and tilting motions, you can run, jump and slide, just like you would in other games of this type. You can choose which film character you would like to be while you do your running, in a race against time before the maze closes and you are trapped inside. There are also hidden clues which you can collect and you can also unlock new levels for each successful run. For example, once you get through a few runs, you’ll have the ability to run on walls, parkour style.

The graphics and music are also in keeping with the movie adaptation, but of course a little less dark (it would be hard to go all dark and gloomy in an endless runner game). You have to spend $3.99 to play this game though, but if you really loved the movie and want to live vicariously through the Gladers (well, at least just the running part), you can purchase this through the Google Play Store.

Meizu’s Flyme OS makes it to the Google Nexus 5

Xioami is not the only Chinese manufacturer pushing a heavily re-designed custom Android OS (called MIUI) for its devices, Meizu isn’t far behind with the Flyme OS. This Android 4.4 variant was designed by Meizu mainly for their MX line of smartphones, but an XDA forum member has ported it for the Google Nexus 5 – allowing the OS some viability outside of Meizu’s phones.

XDA forum member “Vpabc” posted the port for the Nexus 5 via the famed XDA forums saying this is an official port – meaning that Meizu is exploring life for Flyme OS outside of just their phones. Flyme OS is based mostly on CyanogenMod’s CM11, but you won’t make that connection easily if you use the OS.

The look and feel of Flyme OS is very different to the custom ROMs available for Android devices out there, so this might be an option for someone looking to change things up a bit and going for a different feel in their device’s OS. The version posted is considered a “stable” version, so it will pretty much work with you Nexus 5. There are some bugs though, so the experience will not be as perfect as you want it to be – but it is tolerable.

The warning is that as ever, when switching up ROMs, make sure that you have a stable backup available. For those who are interested, the ROM is downloadable via the official XDA thread here. Enjoy!

Xiaomi Mi 3 and 4 get stock Android 4.4.4 custom ROM

Got one of Xiaomi's recent smartphones but tired of the heavily customized MIUI experience? If you're not one to shy away from a bit of heavy lifting and from the potential risks of ROM flashing, then you might want to take a look at this new custom ROM that brings an almost vanilla Android experience to the Mi 3 and the Mi 4.

Xiaomi's smartphones sell like pancakes, whatever the generation. To some extent, this is due to the lethal combination of decent to high-end (depending on your brand loyalties) specs and a price to die for. In its home market though, it might also be due to its custom Android interface, MIUI. But as Xiaomi slowly expands to other markets, it might be facing consumers who are not so fond of the iOS-looking skin. Those looking for a way out while still keeping the smartphones' hardware benefits now have an option.

This ROM that doesn't have memorable name brings the vanilla Android experience to the Mi 3, both WCDMA and CDMA models, as well as the more recent Mi 4. That said, like any custom ROM, it does add some features that try to make the Android experience a bit better (because a stock experience isn't exactly perfect). For one, it adds a percentage indicator for the battery icon and data speed display. It also has double click to sleep, but not to wake up. It comes with superuser (root) enabled and is noted to have OTA upgrade support.

Of course, like any ROM, flashing carries it's own risks, but the process is so common that it is already well documented. And for those who want to get away from MIUI but not from their phones, or for those who want to explore the world outside Xiaomi's carefully crafted garden, this is one of the very few ways out.

Twice the storage capacity at 32GB, the model will be $27.40/month but with a $149.99 one-time payment under a 2-year contract.

LG Wine Smart is company’s first flip style smartphone

Like it's chief rival, LG is getting back into the presumed extinct clamshell form factor. Unlike that said rival, however, the LG Wine Smart is groundbreaking, at least for LG, since it is the company's first smartphone to bear that form ever since the it launched its Wine series back in 2007.

For quite a time, and longer in the US, flip phone or clamshells were en vogue. You'd see them everywhere, including as TV or movie set props. The arrival of the iPhone and its singular, flat body finally put the nail in the coffin, but some companies, particularly Korean ones like Samsung and now LG, have tried to keep that style alive today. While Samsung has been churning out at least one, sometimes two, such smartphones a year, this is LG's first jab at a flip smartphone. Unlike some of Samsung's models, however, the LG Wine Smart is clearly designed for a mid-tier market and one that caters specifically to elderly users.

The specs definitely betray that fact, with a 1.2 GHz quad-core CPU, 1 GB of RAM and 4 GB of internal storage that can be supplemented via a microSD card. The screen is a 3.5-inch LCD with a resolution of 480x320. Not is it only low, it also stands alone, unlike the dual-screen setup of Samsung's equivalents. It does have two camera though, an 8 megapixel at the back and a VGA on the front. The 1,700 mAh battery is removable and replaceable.

The LG Wine Smart has some features designed for older smartphone users, aside from the obvious presence of physical keys, of course. There is a "Safe Keeper" function that will automatically send out an emergency notification, along with necessary information like the phone's location, to pre-defined numbers in case the smartphone is unused for a set period of time, which could be an indication that something is not right. Amusingly, there is also a dedicated physical button for launching Kakao Talk, presumably because everyone in Korea, even older people, know how to use the instant messaging service.
