Huawei Ascend Mate7 shows off its premium nature at IFA 2014

Here at IFA 2014, Huawei is trying to make history. Rising above the ranks of other Chinese manufacturers, it is pulling all the plugs to out its most premium smartphone yet. With a premium build, a notable design, and top of the line hardware, the Ascend Mate7 is poised to play in the big leagues. It even sports a fingerprint sensor of its own just to prove how serious it is.

The Ascend Mate7 will have nothing to be ashamed of when it comes to hardware, at least except for the screen. The 6-inch LTPS display made by Japan Display Inc, perhaps better known as JDI, unfortunately only bears a resolution of 1920x1080. Given its size, it is almost a shame that it doesn't quite reach up to the new QHD standard that is being pushed by the higher end. That said, we will take Full HD over something less any time.

The guts of the smartphone are quite notable. Huawei's Kirin chip might not be as popular as a Qualcomm Snapdragon or a Smasung Exynos, but benchmarks, if you buy into them, would like you to believe that it is just as good, or maybe even better. The octa-core Kirin 925 is made up of four 1.8 Ghz Cortex-A15s and four 1.3 Ghz Cortex-A7s, configured to turn on and off as the need arises to maintain efficiency and conserve power. Depending on the model, you will either have 2 GB of RAM and 16 GB of storage, or a higher 3 GB of RAM and 32 GB of storage. A 13 megapixel camera with Sony BSI sensor and f/2.0 aperture decks the front while a 5 megapixel shooter will welcome any obsessive selfie-taker with open arms.

The back of Ascend Mate7 also bears a new not-so-secret feature: Huawei's very own fingerprint scanner. Riding on the fad, the company is touting its own way of doing things. Huawei assures the public the sensitive fingerprint information isn't stored on the device in a haphazard manner but is instead nested deep inside the Kirin 925 itself, taking advantage of ARM's TrustZone architecture and SecureOS protection. In theory, it means that no third party apps will be able to gain access to that information. In practice, only time will tell. Huawei's implementation, however, does have something that might trump others. Its system can actually store 5 sets of fingerprints, each of which can be assigned to different access levels, enabling owners to hide private information from other "guests", perfect for a family use case.

The design of the Ascend Mate7 isn't lacking either. Huawei says that the body is 95 percent metal. The insides are made of aluminum alloy. The bezels around the screen are only 2.9 mm wide, which gives it a screen-to-body ratio of 83 percent, no doubt one of the highest around. Despite all those, it is designed to be comfortable to use and usable with only one hand, with a thickness of 7.9 mm and a weight of only 185 g. And with color options of moonlight silver, obsidian black, and amber gold, the Ascend Mate7 definitely has the looks to show.

Unfortunately for those expecting relatively lower prices, perhaps unreasonably given the hardware, the Huawei Ascend Mate7 also carriers somewhat premium pricing. The 2 GB RAM/16 GB storage configuration, which is the standard model, comes with a 499€ price tag. The premium variant, with the higher memory specs, will also come with a higher price of 599€. Huawei will roll out its flagship sometime this month, starting with China, Hong Kong, Germany, Italy, France, Spain, the UK and 23 other countries before the Ascend Mate7 heads out to other parts of the world.

Fleksy partners with Samsung Gear S smartwatch

Virtual keyboard Fleksy has announced that it is partnering with an OEM for the first time ever and now they are integrated with the new Samsung Gear S. They are the exclusive third-party keyboard to the newest smartwatch from the Korean brand which runs not on the expected Android Wear but on the Tizen platform.

Fleksy, which has established itself as one of the most popular virtual keyboards in the market, will now be seen as a third-party option to the built-in keyboard of the newest smartwatch from Samsung, launched just a few days ago. It has now been pre-installed in the demo smartwatches at Samsung’s booths at the IFA 2014 in Berlin, which will begin today. The company’s plan is to have it pre-installed with the premium features available for free just for the Gear S. They have assured Gear 2 and Gear 2 Neo users that Fleksy would still be available for them and that they will receive a major update soon.

While the idea of actually having a keyboard in a tiny thing such as a watch is still laughable, the Gear S is the first smartwatch to have a data connection so sending messages through it may be something users should take advantage of. The 2-inch AMOLED screen of the Gear S however, may still not be a very comfortable proposition when typing, especially for those who have chubby fingers. Fleksy however is known for having not just a beautiful design, but also for the users’ fast typing experience and they might have a more non-cumbersome virtual keyboard for the Gear S.

If you already have the previous Samsung Gear smartwatches, you can try out Fleksy on your device by downloading it through the GearStore. Fleksy is also available for other Android devices and may be downloaded for free through the Google Play Store, with a premium version available for $3.99.

ASUS launches new MeMO Pad 7 tablet

ASUS was one of the many companies who opened IFA 2014 with announcements of new products. We’ve seen the ZenWatch earlier, ASUS’ first wearable device. Next to be introduced is another addition to the very successful MeMO Pad family of Android tablets.

The MeMO Pad 7 (ME572C) is more of an upgraded and slimmer version now at 8.3mm thick and with a new Atom Z3560 processor. This thin and lightweight tablet looks stylish in either black or gold.

ASUS MeMO Pad 7

Considered as a high-end tablet by ASUS, the MeMO Pad 7 impresses with a 1920 x 1200 Full HD IPS display, Bluetooth aptX for better audio quality, and the latest ASUS ZenUI. Making this tablet lightweight is its material made from duralumin and fiberglass. Compared to its predecessor, the new MeMO Pad 7 features rounded edges for a more comfortable grip.

Aside from the Android KitKat mobile OS, the ASUS device is preloaded with ZenUI. If you get a ZenWatch smartwatch, you can unlock the tablet by touching the two devices together.

ASUS will be releasing the tablet in three colors: Burgundy Red, Gentle Black, and Rose Champagne. WiFi-only and WiFi/LTE versions will be available complete with a 5MP rear camera, 2MP front-facing camera, 2GB memory, and 16GB or 32GB storage capacity.

The MeMO Pad 7 will be ready by Q4 at an unknown price but we know tablet will be released in the UK and the US.

T-Mobile to bring Sony Xperia Z3 to US by end of 2014

No matter how excellent a smartphone is, if any of the US carriers don’t make them available, then residents won’t be able to experience the device. That has been one of the problems of Japanese OEM Sony as they have not experienced much support from local carriers in the region. But now T-Mobile has confirmed that they will be carrying the latest flagship of Sony, the Xperia Z3, which was recently launched before the start of IFA 2014 in Berlin.

Among the carriers, T-Mobile may have the most favourable relationship with Sony and so it is no surprise that they will be carrying the Xperia Z3. What was different this time is that it comes so soon after the debut of the flagship phone as it sometimes takes a while for them to be supported by the US carriers. The successor to the previous flagship Xperia Z2 has been received favourably so far since it launched yesterday with its 5.2-inch Full HD display, Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor and a 3GB RAM.

The Xperia Z3 still has a 20.7MP rear camera like its predecessor, but it has upgraded some of the details, like the 25mm wide-angle Sony G lens and a 12800 ISO sensitivity that is the first among the smartphones, as Sony claims. For gamers, the Xperia Z3 is doubly exciting as it has the new PS4 Remote Play feature which allows users to play their Playstation 4 games on their phone as well. The other Z3 devices, the Compact and Tablet Compact, also have that feature.

The Xperia Z3 is of course still waterproof, well at least up to 1.5 meter of freshwater in 30 minutes of immersion. As for how much this will be available in T-Mobile and what plans they can be included in, we still have to wait for further announcements.
