Tapet generates random wallpapers for your mobile device

Some people change wallpapers on their mobile devices as often as they change clothes (some even more than that!). But there comes a time when you’ll run out of ideas on what to use or you’ve already exhausted your wallpaper app. Here is where the Tapet app comes in, as it can generate a random wallpaper for you daily or even hourly if you really wanted.

The word Tapet is actually an old European word that means wallpaper, and it basically encompasses what the app does. With its exhaustive “database” of decorative wallpapers, it can help your device look nicer by generating a different one depending on what interval option you set, starting from every 15 minutes to every week. You don’t even need to resize them to fit your device; it automatically creates wallpapers depending on your gadget’s resolution at the highest quality. In fact, it can even have a parallax effect on your screen. The developer promises that new wallpapers will be added for every update, so there is almost no chance of a wallpaper repeating itself when you choose the random mode.

As soon as you install the app, you can already start looking at the wallpapers and choosing your first one. You just need to swipe left, right or down to browse through them, and if you want to go back to the previous one, you just need to swipe up. Once you’ve found what you want, just click on the check button and it will change your wallpaper with something that fits your screen. If you’re bored, you can even start a slideshow of the available wallpapers by double tapping the screen. The app also now lets you save the wallpapers that you like or even share it on your social networks.

If all this sounds like it would be too heavy for your device, it is not a live wallpaper app, so it will not affect your CPU or memory consumption. However, it is still in beta version so there is no guarantee yet that everything should work perfectly. But if you’d like to try it out, you can download Tapet from the Google Play Store for free.

OnePlus unleashes an even bigger Blizzard of Invites

After a storm, what do you get? Well, apparently for OnePlus, a blizzard. Since it just announced the availability of Bamboo StyleSwap covers for their first and only smartphone, it is only reasonable that they are now trying to reel in more buyers. This time around, they have doubled the stakes, offering invites to buy the OnePlus One to 5,000 lucky people.

The OnePlus One owners group is pretty much an exclusive club of lucky raffle winners and people with the right connections. As a small startup, OnePlus tried to go the indie route and cut out the middlemen of retailers and distributors. Sounds good until you realize that OnePlus itself becomes the bottleneck of the distribution process, without the manpower to sell the phone in markets themselves. As of the moment, the only way you can get into this club is either by winning a contest or by being invited by someone who already owns one.

There have been a few waves of invitations sent out, but perhaps even fewer waves of actual shipments. The last one was in June, when they held the "Storm of Invites" contest, putting up 2,500 invites up for grabs. This time, the number is 5,000 but the mechanics are still the same. You sign up via Rafflecopter and pretty much peform menial social networking tasks until the day of the draw. At the moment, there are already around 165,000, which means more than 41,000 participants, each allowed 4 entries, all vying for only 5,000 tickets.

It should once again be noted that this is a raffle to get invites, not to actually get the phone itself, which would have been too good to be true. Lucky winners will, of course, still have to pay for the 64 GB Sandstone Black model. That costs $349, which isn't that bad given the features of this still elusive creature. Better hurry if you have any plans on joining. The raffle ends on July 23 at 9:15 a.m. EDT.

Google Play Store gets a partial Material makeover

An inevitable change is coming ever since Google revealed its new Material Design aesthetic at Google I/O 2014 last month. Although the rest of Android 4.4 will remain stuck with the Holo-based design, Google has begun to eat its own dogfood and applied its new design principles on its own apps, starting with Google Play Store.

The changes in the latest 4.9.13 version of Google Play Store isn't exactly earth shattering and is, in fact, quite incomplete. Google seems to be implementing visual changes piecemeal and in this round has focused on applying it to individual app pages before using it on the entire app interface. That said, the changes are immediately visible and not so subtle and you will quickly see the focus on graphics, flat icons, and paper metaphors that are the hallmarks of Material Design.

Almost immediately, when you tap on an app, you will be greeted by an app's banner or video, if it has either one. If not, the usual icon and app name will be at the top. Although each app page is still separated into sections, they are no longer as delineated as in the previous Google Play Store version. You could say that, at least for the main content, they all reside in the same sheet of paper, separated only by thin lines. Individual reviews, in fact, don't even have line separators and just flow together as a whole. New to this layout is a row of buttons, of course in Material Design fashion, that are shortcuts to various sections like ratings, app category (Tools, News, etc.), Google+ contacts who +1'ed the same app, and Similar apps. Unfortunately, you won't see any of the paper-like animations and depth levels detailed in Material Design, since that would most likely require Android L's theme engine.

As always, updates to Google apps happen in staggered waves but, unlike common apps, you don't have to do anything to get this update. However, you can always query the server to check if an update is available, by tapping on the Build Version in Settings, or, if you really want it now, you can download the Google Play Store 4.9.13 APK from the link below.

Paranoid Android 4.5 Alpha 2 polishes new Recents style

Just a week after Paranoid Android revealed that it was already hard at work at the next major PA version, it has revealed the second alpha for the upcoming 4.5 release. The changelog for this pre-beta version isn't really that long and in fact focuses only on one thing: making the Recent Apps redesign smoother, prettier, and better.

The redesigned Recents takes its inspiration from Android L, where instead of getting a flat vertical list of app thumbnails, you get larger boxes arranged in a flowing tickler file representation. Like it or not, this is the direction that Android L will be going and it wouldn't be a surprise if custom ROMs, like Paranoid Android here for example, would adopt it as well. Unless, of course, they prefer some other implementation, like OmniROM's OmniSwitch.

In this iteration of the new Recents, the focus has mostly been on polishing up the visuals. The background, for example, has been made transparent so that your beautiful wallpaper will shine through. Animations have also been improved to be as smooth as butter, in particular the zooming animation when switching between an app and the Recents display. Although not yet visible in the video below, it now also uses stronger shadows, definitely a good design decision to help differentiate one app's thumbnail from another, especially considering PA's implementation doesn't seem to include titlebars with app names.

For those not too hot about PA 4.5, the dev team still has something for the stable release. But like 4.5 Alpha 2, most of the work has been on improving visuals and design. Again, the Theme Engine has been synced with upstream source code to make sure it doesn't diverge too much. The navigation bar's transparency issues have also been addressed. Lastly, users will be able to completely hide the battery from the status bar via a new option in the theme manager. These updates will be rolling out via PA's OTA app or, alternatively, can be downloaded directly from Paranoid Android's web page.
