Facebook update: like posts offline, untag photos on app

You’re browsing through your Facebook on your phone and see a great picture or post by your friend about something important. You want/need to like it at that very moment. Too bad you’re offline. Or you had a wild party the previous night and when you wake up, you saw that your friends tagged embarrassing photos of you. Too bad you’re on mobile and you can’t untag to save your online reputation.

With the new 10.0 update to the Facebook for Android, those two problems mentioned above can now be solved immediately. Users can now like posts and photos and even pages for those inexplicable moments when your mobile data suddenly conks out on you or you’re in a wifi dead spot. Another new feature is that you can remove tags that either you or your friends have added (which you’re suddenly regretting having made or allowing on your timeline) on the mobile app instead of having to go to the desktop version.

Another helpful update, especially if you have a gazillion friends on Facebook who constantly love posting inane observations about the world, is that you can now turn post notifications on and off through the app. It also claims that the update has also brought “improvements to speed and reliability” but we’d have to get back to you on that if it’s true.

Facebook has been constantly updating its mobile versions after receiving much criticism that the web desktop version is still far superior to the Android one. With more and more users accessing it through mobile, there is a need to add even more user-friendly features to the app.

1Password for Android, hands-on with the cross-platform champ

Free (for now), 1Password for Android is a revamped, rethought password manager for all your devices. From tablet to phone, 1Password for Android has come a long way from earlier incarnations. The question is whether or not it’s worth buying in August once the free trial runs out.

The handiest thing about 1Password is that it’s cross platform — truly. Mac, Windows, and iOS are all supported in addition to your Android device. Going from desktop to mobile is easy and efficient, keeping all your passwords right in front of you. The app uses a secure log-in procedure, and uses 256-bit encryption to generate passwords.

We won’t second-guess the 1Password security methodology; they’re about as good as it gets there. In that respect, you know your passwords are safe, and those generated are as strong or stronger than any other app/service around. The app also has a secure browser you can use if you like, but it doesn’t have many bells and whistles. It’s really there to let you log-in via a streamlined approach, not be a Chrome competitor.

1Pass 2 AC

In the instance you forget your password, 1Password is fantastic. You can organize yours into groups, and organizing them is just as you’d expect; just tuck passwords into the folders you like, if you like. Finding your passwords is simple and effective, but that’s where the fun stops in some instances.

The app doesn’t work with Chrome’s mobile browser, so finding a password while browsing there isn’t a desktop experience. The app also doesn’t work with other apps. That’s to be expected from a security standpoint (allowing another app to gain access to 1Password is a potential nightmare), but doesn’t lend itself to ease of use.

On the desktop (we use OS X for this example), a small icon can sit in the top bar. It’s a mini version of the app, and will monitor browsers and ask if you want to keep passwords you’ve entered it doesn’t yet have. We’d have liked a similar functionality on mobile, but that makes for an always-on scenario that would drain battery and — here we go again — reduce security clearance.

1Pass 3 AC

Conclusion

If you’re cross-platform, 1Password is brilliant. It syncs to the cloud via Dropbox, so migrating saved passwords is easy and effective. So long as you make sure it syncs regularly, you’ll have all your passwords with you, all the time, as secure as possible. If you’re more into keeping things contained, you can also use a built-in file manager to keep all passwords on your device. In a pleasant twist, our app seems to also block screenshots, making it even more secure.

If you’re mobile centric, 1Password becomes a bit more troublesome. It won’t offer to save passwords like the desktop version, and doesn’t peek into Chrome or apps to find already saved ones. That’s secure, we get it, but it’s also starting from scratch. If you already have something you’re comfortable with to keep passwords secure, 1Password may not be for you.

Pusbullet, EvolveSMS lets you reply from computer

In an age where most people deal with multiple screens while at work or even for leisure, integrating and mirroring notifications on your various devices is becoming even more important. Pushbullet has been a pioneer in this area and now they are partnering with EvolveSMS to bring this feature to a higher level.

While Pushbullet lets you read and dismiss notifications from your phone or tablet on your desktop, what’s missing is the ability to respond to SMS messages from your computer. With this integration with EvolveSMS, you can now save yourself the trouble of picking up your device just to answer a text while you’re busy working on an important document on your desktop. You can reply directly from there using the PushBullet app and it will send it back to Evolve on your phone or tablet.

However, it’s not yet available for everyone else. You need to be part of the Google Plus community of EvolveSMS (using the 1.8.0 Beta 1 version) and the Pushbullet community as well (on the 14.3 beta version) to try out this integrated feature. You will also need to update your Pushbullet chrome extension to the latest version to be able to enjoy this integration.

The new version of EvolveSMS also has other features that will be added in the future. You will soon be able to look at your recent conversations when writing a new message. They will also be fixing the previous bugs and improve GIF viewing as well as several speed enhancements.

OnePlus One delay blamed on new OpenSSL bugs

It is nigh impossible to get your hands on a OnePlus One smartphone, and that impossibility is going to stretch even longer. Even after issuing a new batch of exclusive invites, OnePlus still isn't shipping the smartphone, which is apparently due to fixing bugs related to new OpenSSL vulnerabilities.

Owning a OnePlus one is pretty much going to be an exclusive privilege in the beginning. This invite-only system is a double-edged sword that could build up tension around the device but also turn off would be buyers. So far, two batches of invites have already been sent out, but none have received their device yet. In the latest invitation, OnePlus states that a major software update is causing shipment to be delayed, with no target date dropped. This is definitely news that no one would like to hear, and the Internet immediately picked it up, going as far as comparing the OnePlus One to notoriously delayed products bordering on vaporware.

Cyanogen Inc.'s ciwrl also took to the Internet to explain to real scoop. This supposed major update is revealed to be related to a number of new OpenSSL bugs disclosed just last week. OpenSSL has become a source of worry for many in the IT industry after the revelation of the "Heartbleed" bug. Cyanogen therefore wanted to immediately patch these new ones up before they shipped the customized CyanogenMod 11S version to users. This, however, necessitates another round of QA tests and certification, which is actually not unusual when it comes to commercial mobile devices such as this.

While Cyanogen's and OnePlus' eagerness to ship secure software is commendable, it does open up a few issues. It is certainly possible for Cyanogen and OnePlus to have shipped the device now while working towards an immediate firmware update. This is, in fact, what most manufacturers would do. Of course, the consequence of these new OpenSSL bugs could be pretty severe, but delayed products could have even more dire penalties. It also implies that the OnePlus One isn't far into the production process as one would hope. If they're still at a stage where Cyanogen can still make changes that would halt production entirely, then the smartphone is far from ready to ship in the first place, perhaps months even. It is impossible to ship the perfect software, but products like this have a window of opportunity to make an impact in the market. For OnePlus, that window, which is probably small enough to begin with, might be closing in fast.

Final Fantasy Agito in English coming soon

Final Fantasy and Square Enix fans, start holding your breaths. The North American office of the game publisher has officially revealed that Final Fantasy Agito will soon be heading to the region and available for free and in English.

Word of the title coming to Android first surfaced September last year. The game is a spin off of the Final Fantasy Type-0 game that was released for the PlayStation Portable. The game did actually arrive last month, but it was only available in Japan, and also untranslated. Thanks to positive feedback and demand, Square Enix will soon be releasing the game in North America. It will be available for free, but will unsurprisingly have in-app purchases.

Final Fantasy Agito has a few unique features compared to other games in the franchise. Unlike recent Final Fantasy titles on consoles, players will get to create their own character and customize it instead of living out their life with a premade character. But player decisions in Agito have more far-reaching effects in-game. According to Square Enix, decisions will affect the course of history of the in-game world, which will consequently affect how other players experience the game as well. There is definitely a hint here of persistent online multiplayer game mechanics and it will be interesting to see how Square Enix will manage to pull this off. Naturally, you will also have the option to dish it out with other Final Fantasy Agito players.

Now for the bad news. There is no set or estimated date of arrival for this game, and Square Enix's track record for this title doesn't inspire confidence. It took more than half a year for the publisher to deliver Agito, even for its primary Japanese market. This time, though, they won't be starting from scratch so the waiting time should be shorter. At least, theoretically. In the meantime, enjoy this new trailer, finally in English, while we wait for the day of reckoning.

Google Glass XE18.1 update: photos, footie, batteries

The newest update to Google Glass to version X18.1 is bringing better functions to several important things for users: better photo editing and sharing options for the MyGlass app, battery notification and for football fans, World Cup updates for your favourite teams.

Taking photos, tweaking them and sharing them immediately on your favourite social networks is a very important function for mobile phone users. With this new update, the MyGlass app for Android lets you see on your phone immediately the photo you just took from your Google Glass. As you view it through the app, you can put on your filter of choice and then share it to either Instagram, Facebook, Twitter among other picture sharing apps out there. The device’s battery status is another crucial information that every Google Glass user should have. Your MyGlass app can now send you a mobile notification if your battery goes below 20%, a signal that maybe it’s time to start charging your glasses.

But if you’re a football (not the American kind, but the one the rest of the world calls football) fan and you’re eagerly counting the days until the World Cup starts (which, as of writing, is just two days away), the latest update to Google Now cards will be the most exciting news for you. Add your favourite team, whether it’s defending champion Spain or host Brazil, to your Google Now cards and you’ll get notifications on your Glass about their games, goals and maybe even what brand of football kicks they’re wearing.

The Google Now cards for Glass also has other updates, like a Parking Location card for those who always forget where they parked their vehicles and also a card to track packages that are being shipped or delivered to you. But of course you’re already too busy reading notifications about the World Cup to read this part right?
