Netflix creates “Orange Is The New App” for hit TV show

To make your mark in the increasingly crowded world of shows on network TV, cable and video streaming sites, a strong social media presence is not just needed but essential. Netflix has a commercial and critical hit on their hands with the prison dramedy Orange Is The New Black and now they are banking on their fan base to grow even more with the new app called, what else, Orange Is The New App.

Orange Is The New Black tells the story of a privileged, white, middle-class woman who goes to prison on a drug smuggling charge from her college days. She encounters a host of colourful and weird characters while locked up in the joint, showing viewers a world that is hilarious, existential, heartbreaking at times but never boring.

The new app, already available on Google Play Store, will allow you to create your own memes using different characters from the Litchfield prison. Although memes from the show are extremely popular online, at least if you make it from this app, it’s official. You can replace the face of a character with your own picture or just write your own messages over popular images from the show. And of course it has an easy share option for social networks like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, messaging apps like WhatsApp and even SMS.

While the app has gained positive reviews on the Google Play store from the show’s fans, there were some comments that the images contain spoilers for the show’s second season. All episodes for the new season were made available on Netflix just last June 6.

T-Mobile Galaxy Tab Pro 8.4 leaked with phone function

Do you remember those days when the smaller your phone, the more popular or sophisticated you were? No? Well, neither do mobile phone companies since the continuing trend is that phones are getting bigger and bigger. A week after Samsung announced their biggest phone-tablet hybrid yet, the 7-inch Galaxy W, rumours are they will be releasing an even bigger one later this year: a phone version of the Galaxy Tab Pro 8.4.

The source (which previously also correctly revealed several unreleased devices) of the leak already has a video up on YouTube, showing the supposed 8.4 inch phone. It looks like the previously released Galaxy Tab Pro 8.4 LTE version, but if you look at it closely, you’ll see that there’s a phone app icon there which means it will have cellular phone capabilities, aside from the normal tablet functions.

The tablet shown in the video is supposedly a pre-release version that is being used for testing. What is unknown at this point is it’s actual name or if it will be part of the Galaxy Tab Pro family. The demo shows it has the same features as the previous Wi-Fi only version, but this time with an LTE connection, a must-have for newer gadgets in the market.

It is expected to be released sometime this summer through US carrier T-Mobile and may cost around $500. Some say it is their answer to rival carrier AT&T’s offering for ASUS’ Padfone X, a 5-inch mobile phone that turns into a tablet when inserted into the 9-inch dock.

Made for Xperia site highlights accessories for Sony phones

Sometimes, the latest phone model with all its features and whistles and bells is not enough for a lot of mobile users. Sony understands this segment of the market and has launched a new website called Made for Xperia that allows consumers to see the various cases, protectors and extra goodies that are especially made for the newest Xperia models.

But the very glaring disclaimer on every page of the site emphasises that this is just basically a showcase for all the accessories created by third-party partners like Case-Mate, Incipio, Krusell and Roxfit and was not manufactured by Sony themselves. So that means if for some reason the brand new orange case that you bought wreaked havoc on your display, it means you have to file the complaint with the case brand and not the mobile company. In fact, the site just displays the products in a gallery and has a bit of information for each accessory, including a reference price. But if you want to purchase it, it will lead you to the specific brand’s website.

Last year, Motorola did a sort of similar thing when it launched its flagship Moto X. They created a "M4DE for Motorola” program wherein they partnered with several companies to create accessories, like the DECK wireless speakers form Sol Republic, that are specifically for Moto X.

For the Made for Xperia site, the accessories included are only for the latest models like the Xperia Z2, Xperia Z2 Tablet, Xperia Z1, Xperia Z1 Compact and Xperia M2. The brands that are participating in the online showcase are available to consumers in Europe for now, but if this becomes a hit, you may also see Sony expanding it to other regions.

Humble E3 Bundle includes Anomaly 2 Android version

E3 week is always like Christmas for gamers as all these new products and titles are announced. But aside from that, gaming sites are also offering massive sales for existing games to the agony and delight of gamers with credit cards. Humble Bundle is offering a special E3 bundle containing several games and add-ons worth $100, including the Android version of popular RTS reverse tower defense game Anomaly 2.

Released late last year, Anomaly 2 is different from others of its ilk as you are placed in a position to attack invading aliens instead of defending yourself as with the normal tower defense games. If you’re playing it with others, you have the option of choosing whether to be on the offence or an alien defending your territory. It also has outstanding graphics like you were playing it on a computer instead of your phone or tablet, although it might push your device’s capabilities to their limits.

While it costs $5 on the Google Play Store, if you take advantage of Humble Bundle’s offer, you get other games in the package, like Civilization III and MX vs ATX Reflex plus free trials for other games like EVE and Landmark. You also get add-ons for games that you should already have, like Smite, Company of Heroes 2 and Magicka.

The package also includes one month of ad-free streaming on Twitch Turbo, where you can also watch the E3 lifestream from June 10-12. The best thing about this bundle? You only pay what you want, even as low as $1! But if you pay more than $2.24, you will get an added bonus of the Mortal Kombat Arcade Kollection. But you better hurry because they're only offering it until supplies last.

Motorola PHOTON Q 4G will be sticking with Jelly Bean

The Motorola PHOTON Q 4G LTE is far from the newest Android handset. But perhaps a bit more important today -- Motorola has decided the fate of the handset in terms of software updates. And in a bit of disappointing news for those carrying a PHOTON Q 4G LTE -- you will be sticking with Jelly Bean.

Motorola has recently posted an update in the "Your Home For Upgrades" page on the support pages. The message is simple and clear -- The PHOTON Q 4G LTE (aka, the XT897) will remain with Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean. This probably isn't the best news for device owners, however given the age of the handset it isn't all that surprising.

This PHOTON Q 4G LTE was released in August of 2012, which means there could still be some users with a few months left on an original two-year agreement. On the flip side, this news from Motorola (about no new updates) should get you thinking about any upgrades once your agreement ends.

If you purchased the handset new in August 2012 you still have roughly two months remaining. It may be a bit early to make a final decision on a new handset, however you should be getting excited because even a lower-end device (bought today) will still be a huge update for you. The PHOTON Q 4G LTE launched with a 4.3-inch (960 x 540) display, dual-core 1.5GHz processor, 1785 mAh battery and 8MP rear-facing camera.

Kindle for Android update improves Audible integration

Amazon has announced the latest improvement for the Kindle app -- and this time around the update deals with Whispersync and Audible. Basically, this update means you'll now be able to quickly switch from reading a book to listening to a book by tapping a button.

This comes by way of the Whispersync for Voice technology. This will allow readers to bounce back and forth between reading and listening -- without worry about losing their place. This latest update simplifies the process of switching between the two formats. Of course, you will need to purchase both formats for this to be possible.

Amazon has said this functionality (dubbed, professional narration) is now available for more than 45,000 books. Those looking to bulk up their collection can use the Amazon Matchmaker service. Matchmaker scans your Kindle library and if available, will allow you to purchase the companion Audible version.

Prices for the companion audio versions start at $0.99 and will increase from there. A quick scan of a personal collection offers prices ranging from $1.99 to $12.99. Ultimately this seems like a solid way to enjoy a book -- being able to read or listen depending on your current preference (or current location).

But on the flip side, it does seem like this option simply pushes people to buy the same content two times. Using Under the Dome by Stephen King as an example. The Kindle book is $7.99, but adding the audio experience means an additional $12.99. Anyway, those looking to take advantage of this easy switching should look for the latest Kindle for Android app update from the Play Store.
