Oscura Second Shadow arrives to shed some light

Ole Alfheim of Chocolate Liberation Front is taking another stab at its Webby-award nominated Oscura. In Second Shadow, you once again take control of the unwilling and rather ironic hero Oscura as he tries to recover the pieces of the shattered Aurora stone and restore light to the Driftlands.

Oscura is an ironic hero in the sense that this creature is trying to collect pieces of light while he himself is practically a creature of darkness. Or at least engulfed in shadows, much like the rest of the land. Driftlands is said to be a gothic land. Plunging it into darkness, then, sounds doubly horrifying, much like the creatures you will run into in this platformer game. "Platformer" would sometimes remind you games like Super Mario, and in this case that is definitely well warranted. The game is described as "Super Mario meets Tim Burton". The funny thing is that there are immediately palpable nods to the Nintendo classic. Remember those pipes that would suck you into an underworld filled with treasure and deadly traps? You've got that here too, except you won't have to guess which pipes have secret entrances.

Your quest is to guide the titular hero in search for the Aurora stone, the magical bright thingamajig that sits in a lighthouse and serves as the Driftlands' sun. Because for some reason, some nefarious creature has stolen it but also managed to break it while running, or flying, away. Oscura, who again is a literally shadowy figure, only has his glowing hand as his weapon. But that weapon is fairly limited in purpose, as you can't actually hit enemies with it. In fact, like in Super Mario, a single touch is enough to kill you. The glowing hand then, is used primarily to light up lamp posts that become your save games. You also collect shards of the Aurora stone, which fill up a gauge that you can use for a rather creative game mechanic.

Oscura Second Shadow has a tiny speck of Prince of Persia in it. With the shards of light, you can slow down, but not totally stop time. In doing so, you can avoid enemies, reach otherwise dangerous places, and claim those cogs and light shards. Be careful though, as activating this time manipulating power drains that gauge. In terms of game controls, Oscura is quite simplistic. You have buttons on one side for going forward or backward and on the opposite side a button for jumping and activating your time powers. All the rest of the game depends on your skill at avoiding enemies and traps and making use of movable parts of the environment, like huge rolling stones or crates, to your advantage.

Oscura Second Shadow is now available on Google Play Store and Amazon Appstore. To celebrate its debut, publisher Suprise Attack is putting it up for only $0.99 for a limited time only. There are no in-app purcahses so once you've bought the game, you're completely free to go, or in this case, jump, as you please.

Thanks for the tip, James!

Square Cash update: ask and send payment requests

Does a friend owe you money but you won’t be able to meet in person anytime soon and bank transfers are such a drag? Or do you want to send some money to a family member who lives in another state? Square’s Cash app has a new update and it wants to make cash transactions a bit easier by allowing you to send or ask for cash requests through SMS.

Well, of course, you’re not exactly exchanging cash through text messages. What you’re sending is an SMS that would ask your contact to download the Cash app, which is Square’s consumer cash transaction service, if they haven’t done it yet. From the Cash app, just select a contact from your phonebook, and it will send a text to them requesting or sending money. If they already have the app installed, they can straightaway do the transaction requested. But if they don’t have it yet, they will be redirected to download the app. You can send as many as 25 requests at once, so that you can message all those who owe you money in one fell swoop.

Aside from this new feature, the app has gotten a new design as well. You can now link your contact number and email addresses to your Square profile. All the functions are more streamlined as well, with the sending interface now more optimized to make transactions faster. You can also add a note to your payments if ever you need to explain to someone why you’re sending them money (or asking for it).

The app is ready to use in 50 states according to Square. You can download the Cash app for free (the cash in your account is not free though) through Google Play Store.

Lenovo Vibe X2 has colorful body in layers and 5-inch Full HD display

Less than one month after Lenovo announced its new Vibe Z2 Pro, it seems like there will be another high end model coming from Lenovo soon. Revealed on TENAA certification site in China, the Lenovo Vibe X2 is listed with Android 4.4.2 KitKat, octa-core processor and a 5-inch Full HD IPS display.

Instead of using a Qualcomm processor like Vibe Z2 Pro, the Vibe X2 turns to MediaTek for its MT6595 octa-core processor - four 2.0GHz A17 + four 1.5GHz A7 processor with ARM’s big.LITTLE architecture. Other hardware specs seems comparable with the Vibe Z2 Pro, except for the 3GB RAM and 2K display. The Vibe X2 comes with 2GB RAM, 13 megapxiel camera, 5 megapixel front facing camera, GPS, WiFi and Bluetooth. There is also another variant with same specs but powered by a different dual-core 2.2GHz processor.

Unfortunately, you will have to rely on the built-in 32GB internal storage as memory card slot is not supported according to the filing info. With the SIM card slot placed at the side, its 2250 mAh battery is probably not removable too.

The Vibe X2 is considered light and slim with 7.27 mm thickness and 120 grams body. Its phone body is built in four layers, with each layer done in different color. The screen layer is actually smaller than other three layers, possibly designed to protect the display when the phone is hit hard from the side.

At the moment, there are no availability details yet. With Samsung, LG, Huawei and Sony preparing to announce new smartphones in IFA 2014 next week, the Vibe X2 could be one of the new devices Lenovo is working on. Follow our IFA 2014 coverage for latest info!

StackSocial has pay-what-you-want Android game bundle

Humble Bundle, there’s a new kid in the game and they’re virtually coming for you. StackSocial is offering a very special pay-what-you-want deal for their Handheld Hero Android Gamer Bundle. There are seven games available but to get more than two in the bundle, you need to beat the average amount that most people are paying. The other good news is that 10% of what you pay will go to one of three organisations they support.

The 7 games available in the bundle are a mixed bag of mobile games that should appeal to most gamers. Bad Hotel challenges you to build a hotel as fast and as high as you can before it gets destroyed by several “bad” elements like seagulls and yetis. Incredipede is a weird and challenging game where your avatar needs to get to the beam of light at the end of each level but along the way it grows new limbs and muscles until you become a centipede-like creature. Rebuild is a strategy game where the survivors of a zombie apocalypse build a fort and protect it against, you guessed it, zombies.

Savant - Ascent is an action-platformer game where you are the titular Savant and you have to battle robots in order to reclaim your gothic castle. Syder Aracade HD is a “nostalgic” game that will bring you back to the gaming days when blasting aliens in their 8-bit glory was the most fun most of us ever had. In keeping with the space theme, Walking Mars is another alien-centric game but instead of just blasting them to smithereens, you need to go on an actual adventure with puzzle-solving and strategy-building. Lastly, Zombie Gunship lets you gun down those pesky zombies, but not with shotguns but with a heavily-armed AC-130 aircraft because of course, it’s more fun that way.

Right now, the average that you have to beat is just $4.27 but it will probably go higher in the next few days. As we mentioned earlier, 10% of what you pay will go to one of three charities that you can choose from: Child’s Play, World Wildlife Fund or Creative Commons. Instead of an app, you will be given a list of APKs so you can install the games manually. The sale will end in 12 days so better make up your mind if you’ll bite.
