Sony has had an app for a while now that users of Sony Xperia smartphones and tablets could use to support Folding@Home. That app lets users donate the processing power and WiFi connection at home during non-peak hours to help find cures for some of the diseases that people around the world suffer from.
The app donates the internet and processing power of those who run it between midnight and 6am. Since the app first launched it has only supported Sony branded devices, but that has changed with the latest update.
The new update for the Sony Folding@Home app allows people using any Android device to donate processing power to search for cures. The updated app also allows users of devices of Sony and non-Sony flavors running Android 5.0 to participate.
The updates app from Sony is on Google Play right now for download. The app is in version 1.00.37 and the update landed on February 26. Android 4.4 and higher is supported. The app is a 7.4MB download and has as many as 100,000 installs. Sony and Stanford University guarantee that there is no security risk involved in the service.
