Android 4.4 gets named as Kit Kat statue appears at Google HQ

Sundar Pichai, coming by way of his Google+ page has shared details on Android 4.4. And in what seems like somewhat of a surprising name, Android 4.4 has been revealed as Kit Kat. The expected statue has appeared on the lawn at Google and Pichai has said they “can’t wait to release the next version of the platform that is as sweet as the candy bar that’s one of our team’s favorites.”

While he did not reveal much in terms of Android 4.4 Kit Kat details on his Google+ page, there has also been a landing page setup. That page can be found by surfing to www.android.com/kitkat and it clearly has this listed as being Android 4.4. There hasn’t been any indication as to when this may arrive on handsets and at the moment Google is offering nothing more than a teaser page with the ability to share your email address in exchange for future information.

Of course, we here at Android Community will have the details as they come available down the line. That aside, Google has also said the goal with Kit Kat is to “make an amazing Android experience available for everybody.” This same teaser page also offers a bit of a history lesson on Android.

The page looks back and offers a brief highlight on the earlier versions which began with Android 1.5 Cupcake and then went to 1.6 Donut, 2.0 Eclair, 2.2 Froyo, 2.3 Gingerbread, 3.0 Honeycomb, 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and 4.1 Jelly Bean. Otherwise, Google has also confirmed that Android has now been installed on more than 1 billion Android tablets and smartphones.

To further the connection between Google, Android and KitKat, there are now some specially branded Kit Kat candy bars available in stores. These feature the Android robot and also offer a chance to win some Android related goodies.
